Mary Anning Staue and Suffragette colours - they've removed them!!

Mary Anning Rocks campaigned for and have now successfully installed a statue to the amazing Mary Anning (love her as am into fossils and feminism). Hooray to that!

They have now apologised on the twitter for putting suffragette coloured ribbons on her as they 'didn't realise they were associated with anti-trans views' 🙄

I feel a bit sorry for them as there were clearly lobbied from one side and are now getting it handed to them on a plate about how ridiculous this is.

'she is just beautiful and so wonderful that she is becoming a place for women to celebrate being women'

In what universe is that a bad thing to say?

MagnoliaTaint · 26/05/2022 16:57

I don't suggest any sort of pile on, pile ons are bloody horrible. I'm just aghast at this. And confused.

Is it 'a place for women to celebrate being women' - is that what is considered so awful?

Just WTF. Leaders at all levels need to really work on their ‘no’ skills.

KittenKong · 26/05/2022 17:01

I had a skim and it seems to be flipping l women on the U.K. whining.

WalkerWalking · 26/05/2022 17:10

Once again "pro-women" automatically equals "anti-trans" and yet "pro-trans" apparently never means "anti-women". Even when it's erasing the achievements of some of the most revolutionary, important women in recent history.

AtrociousCircumstance · 26/05/2022 15:47

What the actual fuck? We’re not allowed to celebrate the fucking suffragettes now? 😧🤬

That’s right. Any conversation about women must have a transwoman at the centre of it, preferably controlling the conversation, wearing a medal, and towering a foot above actual women. Anything else is offensive.

It is particularly offensive to discuss women’s feelings, needs, or 😱 legal rights, unless it is clear thet these are at all times subordinate to those of transwomen.

WildIris · 26/05/2022 17:26

Un-fucking-believable!

JayAlfredPrufrock · 26/05/2022 17:29

How bloody disappointing.

It’s a beautiful statue.

Artichokeleaves · 26/05/2022 17:31

Another own goal. Let the misogynist batshittery roll, it's all great PR for women's rights.

BraveBananaBadge · 26/05/2022 17:31

So a woman told Mary Anning Rocks it was great to see the statue as a place for women to celebrate women. And... other women... saw that as some kind of coded hate speech and shamed them into retracting a thumbs up emoji... While expressing disgust that women they disapprove of have the nerve to use the colours of... the suffragettes?? And these are all academic scientists??

Insane. No wonder they're having so much trouble with Ricky Gervais.

It's still there. It looked like it had gone for me too but it is there: mobile.twitter.com/Caroline_Clason/with_replies

That must be one of the best public monuments to anyone, it almost has life.
Does it need dressing like a Derbyshire well all year round.
Just let her stand. Let people be inspired by the woman, she had an eye for detail and a logical mind.

Dank ribbons in February. Why

BraveBananaBadge · 26/05/2022 17:37

There's just no words. Apart from feck off, obviously.

From that article:
They [the anti-suffrage images] are portraying the suffragettes as being absolute harridans, slovenly housewives, appalling mothers, that they were ugly, that they looked like men, that they were lesbians,"

see also comments about the women who went out for lunch with JK Rowling.

Quite. They say they are women, so I can't see what their problem is .

Redannie118 · 26/05/2022 18:01

I live in Northumberland, where we have alovely statue of Emily Davison( She is buried in Morpeth) The statue is in the town park and is constantly surrounded by lavender to represent the sufferage colours as we see in the pic. Could flowers be planted around the statue of of Mary Anning as a more permenant solution to ribbons?

RadFemApparently · 26/05/2022 18:02

Is it just me or is anyone else glad that at least the TRA haven't tried to 'claim' the Suffragettes as their own and try to make out that they would have been fighting field their rights too? I feel like I'm getting grateful for such small pathetic things these days though so I might just be me.

Imagine feminists wanting to celebrate the Suffragettes 🙄 ...

Plasmodesmata · 26/05/2022 18:04

Do you mean like the "first brick at Stonewall" thing and all the retrospective transing of historical women who didn't conform to stereotypes?
It wouldn't surprise me.

I’m sure I’ve seen TRA’s claim the suffragette colours as their own and also claim that Emmeline Pankhurst would have supported them.

Yep, you've nailed it.
