You know, I went to a pretty strict school but even they didn't censor what I read and watched the way self styled progressives try and do today.

Clymene · 22/05/2022 11:25

I loved the fact that he focused on children and how the ideology in children is about transing away the gay. Anyone who has an issue with that really needs to reflect on their homophobia

DysonSphere · 22/05/2022 11:48

Bill Maher is a very big, well established, liberal left leaning comedian with a huge audience and a long reach and who is actually listened to by many on the left of the political spectrum.

When people quote or listen to those on the 'right' like Tucker Carlson, they are accused of aligning themselves with ' racist white supremacists'

And now when they listen to people on the left.

They are giving quarter to misogynists

You can't win, and nothing makes certain people happy.

For the avoidance of doubt, I'd like to make clear that when I support gay marriage and other rights, I'm not aligning myself with Owen Jones.

Brilliant. That's the whole guilt by association bolloxology wrapped. Great post.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 22/05/2022 11:52

But, but, but...

It's just a jump to the left
And a step to the right...

NecessaryScene · 22/05/2022 11:56

Nah, now he's aligned with already-identified racist white supremacists like Carlson, so anyone who even approves of one of his segments is also aligned with racist white supremacists.

And Abigail Shrier herself is linked to white supremacist mass shooters, as just established by Rolling Stone, so the circle is complete.

I hope you feel suitably contrite for your "fearmongering about transgender rights [...] linked to fears of waning fertility", wims.

When I see people in here embracing bad comedians because they have some anti-trans material I'm reminded of Bernard Manning and how his audience would lap up and roar with laughter at anything he said as long as it was racist.

Mayer's material isn't "anti-trans" it is anti the nonsensical ideology being spread in schools and elsewhere.

LK1972 · 22/05/2022 12:02

That was funny and informative. Glad people are less scared to talk about it. On the purity spiral we're invited to join every time we agree or appreciate someone's opinion-quick scan if Maher's Wiki shows a life-long Democrat, PETA-supporter and cannabis decriminalizer. Is he not the right kind of Democrat? As for his 'right leaning -audience' so what? Are right leaning people bad people somehow? Sick of this attempted polarization and guilt-tripping from the people who are happy to demonize and 'other' a large proportion of their fellow citizens.

Floisme · 22/05/2022 12:03

I still have a copy of 'The Establishment' and would recommend it. That's how aligned I am.

EdithStourton · 22/05/2022 12:10

He's a PETA supporter? Oh bollocks! I mustn't agree with anything he says any longer, since PETA want to outlaw animal ownership and I plan to have dogs till I die....

And I disagree with DH on various matters. Should I divorce him?

LK1972 · 22/05/2022 12:13

Quite, that PETA support seemed to me the worst thing about him.

My husband is a Catholic AND a Tory, to my left-leaning atheist. Got knows what I was doing marrying him, must LTB immediately

Is he?! I had the impression he was a rightwinger, from all the ticking-off we've just had. I mean, I've no idea who he is or what his politics are. Only that he is Bad and if we Align with him by listening or watching a youtube then we are also Bad and Damned for all Eternity.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 22/05/2022 12:18

Supports PETA?

Aaargh! I may not be able to overlook that. They are deliberate liars, inherently dangerous!

Me too.

He highlighted some really important issues, and blew a hole through the born in the wrong body nonsense.

Showing how progressive countries are stopping this devastating medicalisation of children, promoting Abigail Shrier's book and saying of course people need to talk about these rising statistics, are all vital messages to get across.

And, like previous posters, I'm always heartened by the immediate, and illogical, desire to stop women promoting clips like this. It means they're working.

AlisonDonut · 22/05/2022 12:26

Me and the coven are waiting for that list of people we are allowed to watch and agree with.

Shall I send apologies for the next meeting and put it on the agenda for the one after?

MagnoliaTaint · 22/05/2022 12:29

We might be able to organise permits, Alison. Special dispensation to watch comedy even if we don't politically align with the comedian? Maybe only on a Tuesday when it's not LGBTQIA+ Pride bi-monthly day of Repentance?

MagnoliaTaint · 22/05/2022 12:29

Sorry, pan-monthly.

I think it's just men with beards on Twitter we're supposed to listen to.

NecessaryScene · 22/05/2022 12:59

I think it's just men with beards on Twitter we're supposed to listen to.

Absolutely. Because they give a shit about women, unlike this Maher fellow.

SpindleInTheWind · 22/05/2022 13:02

I think our husbands should decide whether Bill Maher is something that they would want their wives and servants to watch PDQ.

Yes, I've often thought that David Renton, Alex Drummond and the wee actor chappie certainly have my best interests at heart.

KimikosNightmare · 22/05/2022 14:09

Following on from other threads on the subject of alignment I vote Tory (have in the past been a party member- failed to renew due to inertia rather than anything else) and I support and regularly donate to Peta.

Anappletreewithnoapples · 22/05/2022 14:13

Watching a Democratic voting comedian, who once donated 1 million dollars to Obama's election campaign, and was sued by Donald Trump for comparing him to an orangutan, isn't suitable viewing material either? Blimey!

BordoisAgain · 22/05/2022 14:57

There seem to be a few 'I'm one of you but you need to stop highlighting stuff because it makes us look bad" people around at the moment.
