Just had the labour candidate at my door

She called me a racist Daily Mail reader because I said I didn't think a child could consent to being sterilised and I didn't think rapists should be locked up with women. I also said I was disappointed with the poor resources for women wrt domestic violence, maternity care etc and she countered with how things are much worse for transwomen. I disagreed. Then she stomped off saying "Oh fine, you aren't going to vote labour then!"
I hadn't even said that, I said I would like her to persuade me to vote for her.
I suppose they get so cross because at some level they know they are talking nonsense.
I feel quite upset tbh.

Update added by MNHQ: The OP's since discovered that the person was a canvasser, not the actual candidate. The OP's sorry for the error - please see their later updates.

Did this really happen?

Kendodd · 27/04/2022 19:46

Not sure I believe you

Gilesgoesformiles · 27/04/2022 19:47

Cool story bruh

porridgecake · 27/04/2022 19:48

Yes it did and I am pretty shocked. But you are welcome to disbelieve me if you want.

that’s a pretty inflammatory statement to put out there without naming the politician and allowing the opportunity for them to defend themselves.

Two sides to every story and all that (the emphasis is on story btw).

nomistake · 27/04/2022 19:51

Was this for a local council election??

Whatiswrongwithmyknee · 27/04/2022 19:51

Some people will just not hear this stuff OP but it is indeed happening.

Tania64 · 27/04/2022 19:52

What town do you live in? Did you get her name?

MarilynValentine · 27/04/2022 19:54

Those who don’t believe this is possible have not been paying attention.

cariadlet · 27/04/2022 19:55

I believe you.

I've been hearing and reading so many accounts of candidates not wanting to engage with the arguments on the doorstep.

It's very frustrating.

You have heard stories of Labour candidates calling people 'racist daily mail readers?'

Nope I don't believe that.

GlasswareisOverated · 27/04/2022 19:58

I've had a similar but not as extreme reaction from a Labor canvasser a few years back. Great way to alienate voters.

tabbycatstripy · 27/04/2022 19:58

It’s not particularly inflammatory as the OP hasn’t named the candidate, which she shouldn’t do because it would tell everyone where she lives.

IstayedForTheFeminism · 27/04/2022 19:59

Well that's one way to not get votes!

porridgecake · 27/04/2022 20:01

I did get her first name, but she isn't on here and I am sure that when she is a bit older and wiser she may well look back and realise that we could have had a conversation rather than an argument. I tried to tell her about Allison Baily but she wasn't interested. She really didn't want to listen and I guess she just wanted to get on to the next house. I am really not an argumentative person, so it was a bit of a strange experience.

Crouton19 · 27/04/2022 20:12

At least they can’t keep saying that it doesn’t come up on the doorstep.

It’s generally inflammatory to tell an anecdote about a representative of an organisation but not provide publicly available details to give your account credence.

particularly in the current political climate, imho it’s important that politicians are held to account for their actions/words. An anonymous anecdote about a nameless politician on the internet isn’t something I pretty much automatically file as bullshit.

‘It’s generally inflammatory to tell an anecdote about a representative of an organisation but not provide publicly available details to give your account credence.’

I don’t think that’s true. It would be unreasonable to expect someone to give the details of where they live, but I still want to hear it when something like this (allegedly) happens.

VestofAbsurdity · 27/04/2022 20:16

I'd bet you weren't the only person who raised this with her hence the reaction and stomping off. Classy display whoever she was. Labour know this isn't going down well with the general public.

Suzi888 · 27/04/2022 20:18

“She called me a racist Daily Mail reader”.

I very much doubt it. 😕

Yorkshirelass04 · 27/04/2022 20:19

Out of interest (and apologies if this has been covered in another thread) - is anyone planning to cast their vote at the next election in accordance with a party's stance on gender identify? I have always voted Labour but my hands are tied.

beck01 · 27/04/2022 20:20

Yawn

QuirkyTurtle · 27/04/2022 20:20

At least try and make your stories sound believable.

Well it is, otherwise what’s the purpose of the anecdote? The OP is conveying outrage and sharing it in the hope others are sympathetic to it. But without actual verifiable details it means nothing and only serves to inflame peoples emotions.

why are you interested in statements that have a 50/50 chance of being complete fairytales? I wouldn’t want my opinion to be coloured by untruths for obvious reasons.
