Just had the labour candidate at my door

She called me a racist Daily Mail reader because I said I didn't think a child could consent to being sterilised and I didn't think rapists should be locked up with women. I also said I was disappointed with the poor resources for women wrt domestic violence, maternity care etc and she countered with how things are much worse for transwomen. I disagreed. Then she stomped off saying "Oh fine, you aren't going to vote labour then!"
I hadn't even said that, I said I would like her to persuade me to vote for her.
I suppose they get so cross because at some level they know they are talking nonsense.
I feel quite upset tbh.

Update added by MNHQ: The OP's since discovered that the person was a canvasser, not the actual candidate. The OP's sorry for the error - please see their later updates.

Who is she?

SmiledWtherisingsun · 28/04/2022 07:37

Theunamedcat · 27/04/2022 20:53

Our labour candidate just ignores you he made all the right noises on the doorstep ignored my follow up email with more details and hasn't been seen here since

My green party candidate has just voted to put unnecessary housing on greenbelt land instead of the unused unallocated brownfield sites (the greenbelt land thsts full of wildlife btw) and the Conservative party candidate that's been involved in a sex scandal

FOR FUCKS SAKE WHO CAN I VOTE FOR

The greens are even worse than Labour on sex /gender.

SmiledWtherisingsun · 28/04/2022 07:37

But I will spoil my ballot rather than vote Tory!

Stabbitystabstab · 28/04/2022 07:38

People trying to brush it under the carpet as unimportant are naive.
I absolutely will not vote Labour or green whilst they throw us under the bus in the name of wokeness.
I refuse to not vote or spoil my ballot as brave WOMEN fought and died for my right to do so.
Guess who that leaves me with?
Guess who will win the next election?
It's not going to be the people screaming bigot at those with genuine concerns.
(I'm a floating voter, I read manifestos in the lead up ad vote accordingly)

alreadytaken · 28/04/2022 07:43

@Yorkshirelass04 My vote is certainly being influenced by this. I plan to write "none of the above" on my ballot paper. I would normally support whoever is most likely to remove this government. I cant vote for the tories but I cant vote for a Labour Party that is deeply mysogynistic and would abolish freedom of speech. I wont deny science, I wont support the sterilisation of gender non conforming children, I wont support enabling sex offenders and violent offenders to have access to vulnerable women by denying them safe spaces. Emailed the Labour Party and told them something along those lines, got no reply. Add total disregard for their former voters to the list of why I can no longer vote for them.

alreadytaken · 28/04/2022 07:45

and I do realise that the stories will abandon women as soon as they win another election - still cant vote Labour any longer.

EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn · 28/04/2022 07:54

You're referencing a load of national issues when this is a local election.

Domestic violence shelters, council-run gyms, public toilets, school toilets & changing rooms. All local.

AnnieLou12 · 28/04/2022 08:13

Domestic violence shelters, council-run gyms, public toilets, school toilets & changing rooms. All local.

Also, councils run leisure centres and issue toolkits etc to schools on sex and relationships education.

Flatbrokefornow · 28/04/2022 08:26

@SpidersAreShitheads

If someone like you, who is clearly an intelligent and sympathetic person, is even considering voting for a government who’s leader is practically the poster boy for entitled misogyny, then Tory it will be and all women are going to fucked over any way. And a lot of men too. How on earth do the Tories ever get voted in? I can’t understand it.

I’ve always said I’d never want to live anywhere but Britain, but really, I don’t think I want to live here anymore. It’s awful what they’re doing to ordinary people.

porridgecake · 28/04/2022 08:28

If the tories come round I will be asking about sleaze, corruption and pornography.
I have no- one to vote for and I am despairing about it.

OP, sorry but I disagree that you should report your thread. Regardless of canvasser or candidate, they were a representative of the Labour Party, and they should be named and shamed. Abusing someone on their doorstep is not a good look for Labour and they should be informed, and you should find your local candidate - easy enough to do on the internet - and that candidate should be made aware that their canvassers are bringing them into disrepute. DON'T back down, this NEEDS to be named and publicised. At the very, very least, the candidate should be contacted and made aware of what is going on.

That's the whole fucking problem. We give in so easily. THAT is how this whole 'transwomen are the real victims' get started. THEY never back down, do they??? So why should you?

catwomando · 28/04/2022 08:34

Well I had a totally opposite experience with my local labour doorstoppers. I told them that if labour's stance on women was different, that I'd have displayed a poster, but as it stands I just can't - even though I desperately want this bloody criminal Tory lot out. They agreed wholeheartedly (some young men and the female middle aged candidate).

They told me that they had been hearing my opinion from many other women and that there was dissent internally in the party and that 'progress was being made' to a more sensible stance that protects women's rights. I told them to hurry up as that vile creep Johnson seemed to be getting the message right (ffs it pained me to say that) and that Starmer needs to up his game -right now.

They agreed.

So, there are sensible Labour folks out there, which frankly is a relief.

DialSquare · 28/04/2022 08:36

I believe you porridge and like you, I am also politically homeless. Can't vote Tory but can't vote Labour either.

Flatbrokefornow · 28/04/2022 08:38

@SpidersAreShitheads

Also, there won’t be any women’s spaces left. Hospitals and refuges will not be funded, and your private health insurance will cater for transphobics. Prisons will be outsourced to Ruwanda.

It’s utterly self defeating for women to vote for a party based on their stance on who is allowed in Women’s spaces, when it’s a party who don’t believe women should have those spaces in the first place, and are actively removing them. The fucking Tories must be in hysterical fits of laughter that the public is swallowing this one. I don’t know how they keep a straight face around the camera.

user1471504747 · 28/04/2022 08:43

I’ve asked this on a couple of threads before but never recieved an answer.

To those saying they will vote conservative for women’s rights, I’d be really interested to know:

  1. It was under the conservative government that this all happened. Trans women in refuges, women’s hospital wards and prisons. Changes to changing rooms. Mermaids in every school etc etc. What are the tories doing to stop and reverse these changes?

  2. How do you settle all that with the fact tory policies in general disproportionately affect women?

But you’re unable to answer my question?

As a person living not too far off the poverty line, unfortunately I can’t afford to pick to be a one issue voter. Our local conservative candidate is a nasty piece of work and even if he knows what a women is (I can’t actually ask him as weirdly enough he avoids our area as if it’s a plague town) that doesn’t undo all the shit he’s done for my community, and how he’s voted on many many issues in parliament. And I’ve felt the conservatives have done the same on a national scale while in power.

Labour is tiny in my area and I’m probably putting myself but we’re probably one of the few places where Lib Dem’s are the only ones with a chance against the conservatives so I vote for them. The local candidate lives nearby, genuinely cares about local issues as they affect him too, and has been genuinely supportive over a number of issues people have had.

user1471504747 · 28/04/2022 09:08

Even if you don’t want to answer the questions it would be good to know why there such bad questions or why you think what I’m saying is either untrue, invalid, or unimportant.

Ive asked them on several threads and I’m not saying anyone particularly owes me time out of their day to answer them but it is interesting that they either get ignored or, if resdponded to, just dismissed without reason

What’s a TRA tactic about pointing out that a lot of the issues have happened while the conservatives are in government, and also I think the generally well accepted fact that yes their policies on austerity do disproportionately affect women?

Anyway I’ll leave it now as I don’t want to disdain the thread arguing with a brick wall Grin

MarshaBradyo · 28/04/2022 09:15

That is really bad and not a good technique before a local election

Nothing. I'm also intrigued to know what the Tory party policy is wrt women, identity based on sex, funding for women-only services, etc. (the things that matter to us). Is it party policy officially or just a few individuals who for whatever reason (either being genuine or expediency) happen to say the right thing?

Yes, they (most notably Boris) have SAID the right things on the issue, but it’s not clear what they’re actually going to do

I suppose you could say that with most things political though really. Unfortunately for me actions speak louder than words and although I do agree with some things that have been said, I don’t agree with the vast majority of the actions.

I wonder if it’ll be included in any party’s election manifestos, and also if not why not.
