Just had the labour candidate at my door

She called me a racist Daily Mail reader because I said I didn't think a child could consent to being sterilised and I didn't think rapists should be locked up with women. I also said I was disappointed with the poor resources for women wrt domestic violence, maternity care etc and she countered with how things are much worse for transwomen. I disagreed. Then she stomped off saying "Oh fine, you aren't going to vote labour then!"
I hadn't even said that, I said I would like her to persuade me to vote for her.
I suppose they get so cross because at some level they know they are talking nonsense.
I feel quite upset tbh.

Update added by MNHQ: The OP's since discovered that the person was a canvasser, not the actual candidate. The OP's sorry for the error - please see their later updates.

Whether this happened or not I will still be voting Labour this time. As much as I hate their stance on gender politics I want to maximise the chance of getting the Tories out and that means voting Labour.

Birdie746 · 27/04/2022 20:23

Are you in Brighton or Bath? They sound like they're full of nutters.

Cornettoninja · 27/04/2022 20:24

@Yorkshirelass04 its been discussed at length on the feminism board if you’re interested.

Georgeskitchen · 27/04/2022 20:26

Get it wacked on your local community Facebook page

SomersetONeil · 27/04/2022 20:27

So what are your options, people of the UK?

Tory?

Or Labour?

Both are surely unviable.

zaffa · 27/04/2022 20:28

Obviously Labour.

And while I can believe the canvasser may not have given the answer or detail OP wanted, I absolutely do not believe any canvasser (even a Tory one) would openly insult and belittle a voter and then trot off.

porridgecake · 27/04/2022 20:44

I am not going to get into arguments here. It is fine for people to believe me or not. She was a young woman and obviously was annoyed by what I was saying, maybe I wasn't the first person to raise the issues and she was fed up. Clearly, in her mind, only people who read the Daily Mail or have racist views would express the views I did about "TWAW". Therefore she made a judgement about me on that basis. I said nothing about the DM or anything racist. It was not a pleasant experience and the next person who knocks on my door will be ignored.

HollowTalk · 27/04/2022 20:47

But was she the candidate or just someone asking how you plan to vote?

Theunamedcat · 27/04/2022 20:53

Our labour candidate just ignores you he made all the right noises on the doorstep ignored my follow up email with more details and hasn't been seen here since

My green party candidate has just voted to put unnecessary housing on greenbelt land instead of the unused unallocated brownfield sites (the greenbelt land thsts full of wildlife btw) and the Conservative party candidate that's been involved in a sex scandal

FOR FUCKS SAKE WHO CAN I VOTE FOR

Tontostitis · 27/04/2022 20:58

The Labour canvasser at my door behaved similarly last week apparently a woman is someone who is born a woman and someone who decides to be a woman and both uses of someone mean the same thing.

I am wondering now if I misheard her and she was a canvasser, not candidate! In which case I am being very unfair to the actual candidate. I don't know who the candidates are because I haven't had any leaflets. Absolutely might have made an error about her role, but not what she said. Even so, what she said was not acceptable for somebody representing a party.

Cornettoninja · 27/04/2022 21:09

It should be easy enough to look up your areas candidates online and check @porridgecake and yes this thread would be unfair to the actual candidate if it was a canvasser (personally I’d give them a heads up that’s how they’re being represented - they might not care, but then again they might) and I agree that it would be an awful representation for any party.

I agree with your core sentiments btw but it seems your problem is less with Labours stance (even though you disagree) and more the individual you dealt with.

FOJN · 27/04/2022 21:10

I absolutely do not believe any canvasser (even a Tory one) would openly insult and belittle a voter and then trot off.

A lib/dem canvasser called me a bigot when I raised this issue before the last GE. At first she didn't know anything about it and then she suddenly knew enough to call me a bigot.

I always voted lib/dem right up until the coalition. Needless to say they did not get my vote last time and they're not likely to get it again anytime soon.

Feckingfeck · 27/04/2022 21:18

So our local labor MP is great… but I just can’t bring myself to vote labor.

Boris is a tool and always has been so I couldn’t vote for him either.

so last time I didn’t vote… felt so sad but there really wasn’t a better of the bad options.

maeveiscurious · 27/04/2022 21:18

I had Labour on the doorstep this week, they do know that Women are adult female humans and agreed that things need to change. I am floating voter but we need things to change

Feckingfeck · 27/04/2022 21:19

Phone autocorrect * Labour

Why do you say "even a Tory one"? Most Tories I've encountered have been of the Voltaire "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" persuasion when they disagree. It's Labour and the SNP who seem to be keen on calling other people "scum".

DreamingofTimbuktu · 27/04/2022 21:39

“She called me a racist Daily Mail reader”

Utterly unbelievable- can’t you do better?

tabbycatstripy · 27/04/2022 21:40

‘why are you interested in statements that have a 50/50 chance of being complete fairytales? I wouldn’t want my opinion to be coloured by untruths for obvious reasons.’

For the simple reason that (if it is true) it‘a important. I don’t expect the OP to give out personal information.

Are you sure about that?

StillWeRise · 27/04/2022 21:54

if it was a canvasser and not the candidate this seems quite believable- I've had labour canvassers who were young, woke type men and looked aghast when I asked them about this issue, there was a definite twitchiness and looking over their shoulders ( like, OMG, rescue me, I've ended up with a bigot), and I think if they'd been less well brought up words like bigot might have been uttered.

I would be surprised to hear this from an actual candidate though.

Cornettoninja · 27/04/2022 22:02

@tabbycatstripy i agree if it’s true it’s significant. The problem with that is how do you envisage ever being able to verify that? Truth is you can’t, but what you will do, and what we all do, is allow heresay and rumour to colour our opinion and consequently real life decisions.

objectively we are all susceptible to it but it’s daft to knowingly embrace it. I’m not trying to be argumentative I just feel that in a world with so much misinformation and propaganda pumped out on an hourly basis by anyone with nothing more than the will to plant seeds to take on their own life, it’s important to sort the wheat from the chaff so to speak. Remember there is very little regulation on what can be published (and it is published) on an Internet forum, even your most basic media rag has to maintain certain standards.

Fwiw I don’t think the OP is necessarily lying, I do question her version of events and the role of the person involved. I don’t really expect her to give her location, but equally I’m not going to give weight to the ‘Labour’ representative part without knowing for sure that 1. It was actually the MP themselves as originally stated and 2. Whether someone who is verifiable is involved.
