Just had the labour candidate at my door

She called me a racist Daily Mail reader because I said I didn't think a child could consent to being sterilised and I didn't think rapists should be locked up with women. I also said I was disappointed with the poor resources for women wrt domestic violence, maternity care etc and she countered with how things are much worse for transwomen. I disagreed. Then she stomped off saying "Oh fine, you aren't going to vote labour then!"
I hadn't even said that, I said I would like her to persuade me to vote for her.
I suppose they get so cross because at some level they know they are talking nonsense.
I feel quite upset tbh.

Update added by MNHQ: The OP's since discovered that the person was a canvasser, not the actual candidate. The OP's sorry for the error - please see their later updates.

I had a very TWAW-y young Labour candidate at the door today. He was really smart & pleasant, wanted to battle the patriarchy together & said he thought the problem was that aggressive, misogynistic men had hijacked the trans cause (hmmm). I told him I can't vote for the Labour Party currently and he agreed that they needed to be open, discursive and listen to women, & everyone needs to feel safe and respected. And yet TWAW. Feeling pretty low about it all.

So bearing in mind that a politician of Gordon Brown's stature once got caught on a hot mic calling a member of the public a "bigoted woman", is it really so hard to believe that some hot-headed young activist would call the OP a "racist Daily Mail reader"?

Well.... the woman speaking to Gordon Brown was actually making totally irrational and unfounded comments about immigrants which have been proved over and over to be wrong. Whereas the whole "you're a hateful daily mail reader because you don't think men are women" is also factually wrong. So a flase equivalence there (disclaimer: not a fan of Gordon Brown either, just of facts and logic!)

Proving something really depends on what people are measuring. Some years after that incident the World Bank, among other organizations, finally admitted that actually, although globalization had generally been good for wealthy and middle class people, it's benefits had not really extended to the working classes in the same way and in fact had been somewhat detrimental to them. GB dismissed what he said because from his POV as a wealthy person with political clout, globalization could only be good and could not affect communities in any relevant way. Not a great look for a LP leader.

Doesn't sound real to me OP. Even if she thought it she's unlikely to say it. Campaigning for the conservatives are we?

@Aishah231 You are very, very, very naive. Welcome to the real world. Labour canvassers are well-known to say these things. Wake up.

I’m really stuck on who to vote for next week at our local elections. I want the Tory candidate out (which shouldn’t be a problem given recent allegations made against him) but I struggle with the other party’s stance on gender politics. I have a young daughter to think about. At the same time if people start withholding votes and spoiling ballot cards in protest then that is surely going to help the more extreme parties. I’m feeling pretty deflated by the whole thing. Women don’t have a voice anymore it seems.

As the public has become aware of this, the Tories allowed that discussion to play out among their members and mps, and began to back away from some of these problematic issues, and now look poised to make some significant investigations into what happened

Which issues are the poised on investigating ?

Labour on the other hand has tried to shut down any discussion, and is doubling down on their position, and still seem to plan to move ahead with significant legal changes should they come into power.

But if the issues are currently being allowed to continue, why is the discussion aimed at the future and not at how women are being let down massively now by this government, how it is unacceptable for women to be treated with contempt now, but it's ok to vote for that and say you are accepting that treatment ?

Why isnt kier saying this. It's the easiest win ever. He only has to say that women appear to be ignored right now forever and let's have a discussion, ooh surprise women pissed off at losing some small but very important places. Let's see if we can fix this?
Literally all kier has to say is women matter, or woman =ahf or yes there are some places that need to be single sex or something that acknowledges women are thought about at all never

He cant cos he either doesn't see the issues, then I dont need a thick as mince man In charge.
Hes too scared, well that's not going to help running the country, which i imagine is quite scary.
Hes being blackmailed, again not someone we want running the country. Need a backbone for that.
Thinks hes being kind, but hes not kind to us.

alreadytaken · 01/05/2022 13:46

@montyspython You are rather missing the point. The Labour party wont talk about this, doesnt respond to women, the leadership doesnt support women MPs brave enough to speak out. Kier should show some leadership, say actually this has gone too far and women do need more consideration than they have had so far. He is afraid of the young deserting him, he wont do it. The only thing that might make him see the Labour party needs a change of direction is a resounding defeat at the polls.

I cant vote for the stories - if I was a single issue voter I'd do so to try and force Kier's hand. There is no-one to vote for. You say dont vote for people who are currently damaging women, vote for those who will do so in future. Not much of a choice there, I'll vote for none of them.

Well, when the Labour candidate I talked to said he’d take my questions back to the local party HQ he turned out to be as good as his word.

I bumped into him canvassing in a group with their other candidate & he introduced me to her as ‘the lady with the questions I was telling you about.’ She then proved that she got it entirely, so I felt very happy!
