Woman's Place UK Bristol meeting on May 3rd (come give me a hug if you want to)

Dear wonderful women,

Just a final reminder that we are having an excellent WPUK event in Bristol on May 3rd at 7pm. This is an event in partnership with fellow feminist organisation With Woman, and we are focusing on the topics of: feminism, birth and motherhood. The amazing speakers will be Victoria Smith, Mara Ricoy, Marianne Hester and Milli Hill and I will be chairing the event.

It has been a long time since our first Bristol event in Feb 2018, and I feel like this will be a celebration of how far we have come. Still a long way to go campaigning for sex-based rights!! But we are making strides and growing so much along the way, that it will be really nice to see each other, enjoy a powerful event and catch up afterwards. I have a feeling many women will want to give me a hug so I'm ready to be hugging everyone left and right, but please know that I am doing alright. Always grateful for all the kindness and solidarity.

Not sure if Mumsnet lets me post it here, but the description of the event on Eventbrite is the following: "Midwife means 'with woman' and woman-centred care is still not guaranteed. In the midst of the current maternity crisis, how do we centre the needs and experiences of women? Our speakers explore the themes of birth and motherhood, obstetric violence as violence against women, mothers' experience of domestic violence and the importance of sex-based language and feminist analysis."

Hope you can make it. Please spread the word to get the last tickets. We'll get the videos up for those who can't be there and we'll have a great security team with us during the night to cover all our bases. There might be a really cool party afterwards too! ;)

I’d love to come but I have a toddler and a baby attached to me at all times. Probably not an entirely appropriate combination.

Children are always welcomed at all WPUK events, specially this one about childbirth and maternity. But no worries if you'd rather not or if it's too much. Videos will be up soon enough.

Thanks, everyone. I'm really excited to see many of you this Tuesday. Come say "hi" and we'll make the videos available for those who can't as soon as possible on our end.

Having missed so many of these, I’m pleased to have a ticket for this one! Though a grandmother I have young female relatives and a particular interest (because of my own experience) in maternal mental health. Looking forward to it.

Really looking forward to this. I have a webinar at 5pm - 6pm and plan to travel into bristol early to go somewhere with wifi before going on to the meeting. Anyone got any suggestions of a quiet spot for a snack and wifi to go to? DM me if you want to meet at same place and go on together.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 02/05/2022 10:41

Bother. I have a long and protracted zoom argument booked.

Virtual hugs, Raquel.

And I expect a nice run down of events here, for all of us who can't make it 💖

nzborn · 03/05/2022 00:30

Testing to see if this is how to do a dm

nzborn · 03/05/2022 00:32

Nope fannycann can you dm me then maybe I can reply to you.

Toomie · 03/05/2022 08:03

Just came on here to see if anyone's up for meeting beforehand. Have just sent you a DM FannyCamm. Really looking forward to it too!

borntobequiet · 03/05/2022 08:26

I’m getting dropped off as am staying locally with family but might I DM people so as to say Hi when there?

FannyCann · 03/05/2022 08:40

Thanks @Toomie and @nzborn
Looking forward to meeting women from my area!

RhinestoneCowgirl · 03/05/2022 13:30

Have also just sent you a DM @FannyCann

Vebrithien · 03/05/2022 13:37

I would have loved to attend, but having only seen this today, I can't sort childcare in time. And cranky, tired children probably won't add to the event!

I hope it goes well, and that you all have the opportunity to talk and discuss.

How do I find out when future events are on, in the area?

RhinestoneCowgirl · 03/05/2022 13:46

I think you can choose to follow Women's Place on eventbrite and then get notifications for future events.

FatFucker · 03/05/2022 13:50

@Toomie would love to meet up beforehand! But try as I might I can't find the DM on here anymore!!

The venue has been leaked on Twitter and a protest is being organised. I've not had my email about the venue yet so I'm not sure how it's become known.

Take care, don't want anyone getting eye-dazzle from all the blue hair!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/05/2022 14:29

Hope it all goes well. To the casual observer, it will look very odd to see students and other protestors, many of them male, objecting to a group of women meeting to discuss maternity services.

FrancescaContini · 03/05/2022 14:30

Also too far for me but I would love to come along too.

CucumberCool · 03/05/2022 14:33

Where abouts in Bristol is this tonight? I'd love to come but will havey 11 week old with me and need to work out if it's walkable.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 03/05/2022 14:37

All we know is 'central' Bristol. I haven't had email about venue either, have been having a quick squizz on Twitter but obv don't follow enough blue-haired folx...

CucumberCool · 03/05/2022 14:43

@RhinestoneCowgirl

Have you got your ticket yet?

RhinestoneCowgirl · 03/05/2022 15:17

Yes I already have a ticket :)

FloodTheBathroom · 03/05/2022 16:39

I'm due to come tonight with a friend but I'm really nervous about the protestors. Makes me sad and angry in equal measure that I'm so worried ☹️ But then I think about how brave Raquel and others have been and try to be brave.

Good luck! You'll really get the spirit of the meetings once you're in there because it's remarkable.

I wish I could have attended but I couldn't have got back home tonight.

tedmundo · 03/05/2022 17:23

I've got a ticket but struggling to organise my evening.

Do the protesters realise they are going to look like a pro-life demo outside!? I am bringing for their abject stupidity.

How very odd they are, wanting to protest any meeting of women regardless of the topic.

Hope I'll be there though.
