Dear wonderful women,

Just a final reminder that we are having an excellent WPUK event in Bristol on May 3rd at 7pm. This is an event in partnership with fellow feminist organisation With Woman, and we are focusing on the topics of: feminism, birth and motherhood. The amazing speakers will be Victoria Smith, Mara Ricoy, Marianne Hester and Milli Hill and I will be chairing the event.

It has been a long time since our first Bristol event in Feb 2018, and I feel like this will be a celebration of how far we have come. Still a long way to go campaigning for sex-based rights!! But we are making strides and growing so much along the way, that it will be really nice to see each other, enjoy a powerful event and catch up afterwards. I have a feeling many women will want to give me a hug so I'm ready to be hugging everyone left and right, but please know that I am doing alright. Always grateful for all the kindness and solidarity.

Not sure if Mumsnet lets me post it here, but the description of the event on Eventbrite is the following: "Midwife means 'with woman' and woman-centred care is still not guaranteed. In the midst of the current maternity crisis, how do we centre the needs and experiences of women? Our speakers explore the themes of birth and motherhood, obstetric violence as violence against women, mothers' experience of domestic violence and the importance of sex-based language and feminist analysis."

Hope you can make it. Please spread the word to get the last tickets. We'll get the videos up for those who can't be there and we'll have a great security team with us during the night to cover all our bases. There might be a really cool party afterwards too! ;)

So there'll be a bunch shrieking "Down with women who want rights!"

Tedious. As always.

SunniDelite · 03/05/2022 17:43

Glinner just shared this. I'm horrified that these people so openly hate us....

On my way and I wish people with huge platforms (eg Glinner but not only him) would hold off sharing the details of the protest till after the event - they're helping the TRAs by publicising it - and therefore making it more dangerous for those who attend.

SunniDelite · 03/05/2022 18:02

Sorry :(

littlbrowndog · 03/05/2022 18:20

Good luck tonight women. Have a great meeting

littlbrowndog · 03/05/2022 18:22

5zeds · 03/05/2022 18:27

Someone post and tell us all about it.

KittenKong · 03/05/2022 18:29

Have the two wee eedjits gone yet? I hope the police did their job and hailed them away.

DappledOliveGroves · 03/05/2022 18:29

On my way! Looking forward to seeing some of you soon!

KittenKong · 03/05/2022 18:29

Hauled not hailed…

5zeds · 03/05/2022 18:41

Are the “protesters” wearing masks to hide their identities?

KittenKong · 03/05/2022 18:54

I saw a photo of two nuts sitting on a table with masks on. Waste of space…

BingBongSong · 03/05/2022 19:01

Have a great time tonight, looks like an excellent line up of speakers. Hope the police police properly this time.

FloodTheBathroom · 03/05/2022 19:08

So sorry to miss it - it sounds fabulous. And so timely given the shit show in the USA where women have to choose between Democrats who refer to them as 'birthing bodies' and Republicans who want to deny them autonomy over their own bodies.
I'm just off to howl at the moon.

Charley50 · 03/05/2022 19:48

Have a great night all, and a virtual hug Raquel. I saw you at the Claimants. You're an inspiration and well deserve that standing ovation 💪🏾👏🤗😍

sweetgrapes · 03/05/2022 21:30

Virtual hugs and strength to all speakers and attendees!!! Flowers

Hope the police do their job for once and everyone is safe.

ThistlyPerf · 03/05/2022 23:13

What a fantastic evening - really well organised with good security and most importantly great speakers.

I can’t believe that in 2022 we have to defend the use of the word woman (at all) but particularly in relation to maternal health care. As a midwife, this is the hill I am prepared to die on.

Ps Happy ‘graduation’ Raquel and congratulations. Hope you are indeed being warmly hugged by many!

FatFucker · 03/05/2022 23:47

Just back! What an amazing evening, so inspiring.

I must admit to being nervous, well very nervous , but the security was great. And the crowd was very non-threatening to give them their due.

I can't thank all the speakers enough and the food at the party afterwards was marvellous and unexpected. Thank you all so much.

On the way out, i unexpectedly felt very sorry for the young girl students. They should have been in there, they would have got so much out of it!

There was probably only about a dozen protesters at the end. Young, naive wee girls. Who will look back in horror at themselves. Banging on about non-binary rights!

What rights don't they have? They should have been in there listening to what's happening to our sisters in America and DV in pregnancy.

THAT'S what they should be angry and protesting about!!

MrsDanversBroom · 04/05/2022 00:01

I’m so glad it went well. ❤️ For Raquel

FannyCann · 04/05/2022 00:19

A brilliant evening, such great speakers.
And I echo everything @FatFucker said. Those immature students outside protesting should have been inside actually learning something important. Marianne Hester speaking about domestic violence and how it ramps up in pregnancy and the control of mothers was very moving and shocking. That's something to protest about. Flowers

Sorry. Was trying to say something but Fanny has said it better... Have reported my post above.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 04/05/2022 08:41

It was a really inspiring event and I'm sorry I didn't get chance to stay for the party afterwards.

Thinking about those students did make me reflect on how I felt as a young woman coming of age in the 90s, I felt at the time that equality between the sexes was mainly sorted out, that I could do anything I wanted to do career-wise, I just had to work hard enough. It wasn't until motherhood in my late 20s that I realised how far we still have to go.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/05/2022 09:19

Why is climate justice "trans rights"? It doesn't seem in any way relevant to me.
