"It's an actual fact that not just women experience periods"

So this is the latest campaign from cosmetics company Benefit...

I have a lot of questions. Firstly, why on earth a cosmetics company are not only jumping on the current trend of "let's somehow get menstruation into our ethos even though it's not related to our company, just so the women think we totally get them" but why they are jumping on it and taking such a stupid, exclusionary and ridiculous view point. Baffled doesn't begin to cover it.

Secondly, how can anyone other than a woman have a period? Answers on a postcard...

I saw a bodyform advert today saying their new pants were for "women+

Its just so fucking dishonest. They make their money out if female biology. Send stuff abroad for women and girls in poverty who don't have access to sanpro something they can't identify out of.

Then they play us like.mugs pandering to first world identity bollocks.

Benefit should go sell their make up in the third world. See how much money they get and who will be queuing at the door ecstatic that identity is recognised.

Musomama1 · 27/04/2022 14:14

Lol re. mascara wand comment.

Good point, what an earth does make up have to do with menstruation? Is this a third party marketing firm sneakily testing the waters for say Tampax?

RogersOrganismicProcess · 27/04/2022 14:22

It’s an actual fact that I won’t be spending my money with a cosmetics company who can’t grasp KS2 science. Shame that it is me that props up the finances for my teens otherwise it might have balanced out for them.

catscatscurrantscurrants · 27/04/2022 15:17

As with others, this company will never see any of my money again.

I’m a woman and I no longer experience periods?

Not ALL women experience periods but ONLY women do

CareBearsCare · 27/04/2022 15:58

Ffs.
As a woman I don't want to constantly talk about periods. I understand that sanitary protection adverts are necessary but why does a company that doesn't sell tampons and towels need to talk about this ?

I was hoping that the answer to their question was young girls have periods as I wouldn't call a 10 year old girl a woman

derob · 27/04/2022 16:21

If only people lobbying on issues that actually matter (such as the climate emergency) had this much influence on big business

Knifer · 27/04/2022 16:22

Yeah? Show me someone who bleeds from their prostate and penis on a monthly basis and I'll show you a man who urgently needs a doctor.

MEN DO NOT MENSTRUATE.

Women who have gender dysphoria and still have working female sex organs will menstruate. Men who have gender dysphoria will never menstruate. Biology doesn't care what your pronouns are, no matter how loudly you shout. It doesn't care what you're telling everyone, biology will always put you in your place.

  1. Only individuals who belong to the female sex can menstruate. Some individuals who belong to the female sex never menstruate, and no individual who belongs to the female sex menstruates over their whole life spans. This means that belonging to the female sex is a necessary conditions for menstruating but not a sufficient condition.
  2. No individual who belongs to the male sex menstruates because menstruation requires that the person has a womb.
  3. The statement in the Instagram post is intended to tell us that my points 1. and 2. are false. This can ONLY be the case if someone has changed the meaning of 'women' so that it has nothing to do with biological sex.
  4. The new definitions of 'woman' are either empirically empty (female soul) or based on deeply sexist stereotypes and retrogressive gender roles. A group defined on such grounds cannot mobilise politically to argue for its needs. This is a win for the MRAs and anti-feminists.
  5. The concept of 'cis' women forces all women who are women because they are biologically female and accept that label to also accept the label that they are very comfortable with sexist stereotypes and retrogressive gender roles as they have female feelings floating inside their brains.
  6. This is not inclusiveness but misogyny.
KittenKong · 27/04/2022 17:49

As my mum used to say… if men got periods there’s be a ‘cure’ for it by now…

Discovereads · 27/04/2022 17:52

My dog gets periods. It’s a true statement but essentially meaningless without context.

Lunaeclipse · 27/04/2022 17:58

It's an actual fact there are many other cosmetic companies apart from Benefit . I intend to shop with their competitiors.

mrshoho · 27/04/2022 18:01

Thank you Benefit, for helping me reach the decision to never visit or spend any further money at your counters.

BlueCookieMonster · 27/04/2022 18:02

Helleofabore · 27/04/2022 08:13

I am sure it is virtue signaling all the ‘right thoughts’. And let’s not forget about the female NB’s who would still be in their market.

However, I also know a socially transitioned teenage female, a transboy, who wears more make up, and dresses much more femininely that I ever did or do. (Ie. Dresses pretty much like their friends do)

Because, they are expanding the bandwidth of how males dress, or so I gather….

(I think it is a great thing to expand ‘bandwidths’ of how the sexes present by the way. I think it is offensive that people declaring themselves as the opposite sex believe they have any right to declare they are expanding the bandwidth of the sex they have declared themselves though.)

What is bandwidth? Not being sarcastic, I’ve seen this mentioned before a few times.

Indeed. If a cosmetic company doesn't understand how it could possibly be that some people are capable of menstruating and others are not, it makes me worried about what chemistry concepts they use in their products.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/04/2022 18:24

My dog gets periods. It’s a true statement but essentially meaningless without context.

Which sex is it?

newnamethanks · 27/04/2022 18:28

It's an actual fact that some people have no idea what the word fact means.

Discovereads · 27/04/2022 18:29

Female obviously. But she’s a dog not a woman now isnt she? 😂

Oblomov22 · 27/04/2022 18:33

Who? Has periods other than women?

Iamnotamermaid · 27/04/2022 18:34

I am not a 'cis women' - I am woman of the female sex. Getting fed up of being redefined by this side show of total bollocks.😡😤

mrshoho · 27/04/2022 18:38

Can I identify as a leprechaun? If yes then it can be a FACT that leprechauns do menstruate.

Fink · 27/04/2022 18:50

DadJoke · 27/04/2022 11:23

Some trans men and non-binary people menstruate. That's the biological fact. Why would you get angry about that?

This is what they said:

"Women, transgender men and non-binary people all menstruate. It's not only women that will experience periods, however, we're led to believe that it is just cis women who menstruate.

"In the latest episode of The Benefit Broadcast: The Conceal or Reveal Edition @kennyethanjones discusses his experiences and the struggles he faces as a transgender man. @corytontwins talks everything from growing up with periods to period poverty - so let’s get educated!"

Kenny Jones seems to be easily confused. There surely isn't another trans or non-binary man in the world who actually thinks that they'll stop getting periods (or not need a smear) if they don't identify as a woman. What does it actually mean to claim that 'we're led to believe that it is just cis women who menstruate'?! No competent person who advised you on transitioning would ever have led you to believe that you wouldn't get periods anymore.

It's wound me up because I've got an appointment in the gyne department at the hospital tomorrow and everytime I go there there's a big pile of forms asking for feedback where the first question asks me to tick a box stating whether I'm male, female, or non-binary. In the gynecology department.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 27/04/2022 18:52

Given that they don't sell period products, I don't know why they would risk it by commenting in this way.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/04/2022 18:54

Female obviously.

Well, yes. Not sure what point you're making? In the dog species, only bitches menstruate. In the human species, only women and girls.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/04/2022 18:56

Do you think they were referring to non humans when they talked about "not just women experience periods"?
