"It's an actual fact that not just women experience periods"

So this is the latest campaign from cosmetics company Benefit...

I have a lot of questions. Firstly, why on earth a cosmetics company are not only jumping on the current trend of "let's somehow get menstruation into our ethos even though it's not related to our company, just so the women think we totally get them" but why they are jumping on it and taking such a stupid, exclusionary and ridiculous view point. Baffled doesn't begin to cover it.

Secondly, how can anyone other than a woman have a period? Answers on a postcard...

They include non binary people so that can be male or female!
That twitter thread is funny 'if you are a trans girl you might not get your period'. Though I was reading a twitter thread the other day where a transwoman claimed having a period and lots of people in comments going wow I didn't know that could happen! Doh!

Or,

'Make up for anyone,'

I've just looked at Kenny's Instagram. Doing a public service announcement telling trans men that they need to have cervical smears because Kenny didn't know they were necessary until they had a conversation with their sister.

The fact that the NHS record people by gender rather than sex is one of the most wrong-headed idiotic things that trans activists demanded and actively damages trans people's health.

And no, I don't think Kenny uses benefit cosmetics and benefit don't make period products so k really don't see the point of this tie in other than virtue signalling and brainwashing.

If Kenny didn't realise they had a cervix (even though they have the full compliment of menstruating female anatomy) and therefore should have regular smears then Kenny must be a bit simple really. How was this not bloomin' obvious to Kenny? 😂

I have an acquaintance who’s biologically female, uses a female name, dresses in a feminine way and wears makeup, is not attracted to women and is married to a man. But they are gender neutral and queer. I’m immensely puzzled by this and it’s one of the reasons why I think we need to stick to talking about biological sex.

AKA spicy straights

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/04/2022 12:57

I’m a woman and I no longer experience periods?

Well yes, not all women experience them at all times in their lives. But only women and girls do.

LeftFootForward · 27/04/2022 12:58

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g
"It would also cover Jameela Jamil and Laurie Penney, who are both 'queer', present as female and are married to males."

Eh? how on earth does that work. Never heard of Laurie Penney, buy JJ is a (biological) woman, married to a (biological)man but identifies as 'queer'.

That must be a new definition of queer that just means 'please look at me, I'm special'.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/04/2022 12:59

we're led to believe that it is just cis women who menstruate.

I don't even know what that means. I'm not "cis" and I am currently menstruating. No one ever led me to believe that I couldn't.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/04/2022 13:01

Eh? how on earth does that work. Never heard of Laurie Penney, buy JJ is a (biological) woman, married to a (biological)man but identifies as 'queer'.

You've also exactly described LP.

DomesticatedZombie · 27/04/2022 13:01

'a face goop company' - perfect.

Whatwouldscullydo · 27/04/2022 13:03

One day they will look back and cringe at this nonsense. As if teens will be able to afford their make up anyway.

Girl just means juvenile human female.
Woman- adult human female.

It covers all and no gender identities.

You cant be non binary as that's a third category so doesn't even make sense. Everyone has a sex. You don't menstruate with your identity.

Identity is irrelevant to any biological function.

This just makes them.look like idiots. Identity matters only to the person involved . No one is obligated to play along. Stick to selling make up.

Melroses · 27/04/2022 13:05

It is the emptiest of virtue signalling.

Is Kenny the person who didn't like venus symbols on packaging is spite of the fact that their mother did all the buying and their periods stopped on testosterone?

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 27/04/2022 13:06

It's not only women that will experience periods, however, we're led to believe that it is just cis women who menstruate.

who’s leading people to believe that only cis women have periods?

I've actually never heard of that …til now obvs

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 27/04/2022 13:09

Oh that’ll teach me to not refresh

everyone else has said the same thing!

I really don’t care about how people identify. But there’s a lot of ‘sex is biologically make or female’ and that’s not strictly true.

Sex is defined by your chromosomes, genitalia, visible physical characteristics and hormone profile. There is a LOT of scope for those not to all be typically male or female. Hermaphroditism, to varying degrees, is a biological reality and not a freak rarity.

Sex is "biologically" male or female. Sex is always biological. There are no third, fourth, etc sexes in humans or any mammals. The fact that the definition of sex is complex doesn't negate that there are two sexes. People with DSDs are not all "hermaphrodites", and of course they are a biological reality. They are also either one sex or the other, just with various developmental issues that are not typically seen in their sex. That doesn't make them a third sex.

Bolognia · 27/04/2022 13:15

Indeed. If anyone can explain how someone who is a straight female in all respects is “queer” then please educate me! What is ‘spicy straights’?

puffyisgood · 27/04/2022 13:17

This is so, so, stupid.

I can on some level understand 'TMANW', in some senses being a woman isn't just about having XX chromosomes and having reached a certain age, a certain quantity and quality of life experience is somewhat relevant too.

But I'm sure that nearly all TM in this situation are, of course, grown up enough to say 'I am medically a woman, so, yes, this stuff is aimed at me'.

Yes. There has never in recorded history to my knowledge been a case of a human being with both a fully functioning male reproductive system and a fully functioning female reproductive system. That's what would surely have to happen for a person to be described as a hermaphrodite.

There are cases where sexual development doesn't proceed as would normally be expected, and this will often need medical treatment because it affects fertility and may come hand in hand with other health issues. My understanding is that in virtually all of those cases it is, however, perfectly clear whether the person affected is male or female. The cases where that's not clear at birth (such as Caster Semenya) are very rare indeed and usually become apparent when puberty doesn't proceed as expected.

Sex is defined by your chromosomes, genitalia, visible physical characteristics and hormone profile.

No. Sex is defined by which type of gamete your body is built to produce, whether or not it successfully does so.

Sex didn't evolve because of identities people wanted to have and ways people wanted to look. It evolved because when reproduction requires two gametes that can come from different individuals, that makes a species genetically stronger and more adaptable and hence better at surviving.

That is why there are only two sexes - because there are two gametes involved in reproduction and those gametes themselves go on to give each individual a sex of their own, roughly 50-50 so as to ensure continued reproduction.

Claims that sex is defined by a multitude of factors are coming at it backwards. There maybe various results and physical / hormonal expressions of your sex. Your sex is still one of only two options.

However, I'd also like to know why, even if sex was what you say it is, that would mean a man can be a woman just by saying so. If sex can be changed by hormones and secondary characteristics and whatnot, then that suggests a man who just says "I'm a woman" isn't one. Or does it? Because transactivists will have you strung up for transphobia for thinking that.

Plus what?

I believe (hope) it's for plus size women. The bottom two comments here indicate towards that, but some clarification would be nice.
