I have to say, I did laugh several times. www.spiked-online.com/2022/04/23/how-the-trans-ideology-dehumanises-women/#.YmSnyIOGefA.twitter

Current thread here.

NotBadConsidering · 26/04/2022 11:18

Has that thread been deleted? Hard to tell with how glitchy things are today. It’s evident Lavery peruses MN so probably reported it. Hard to believe someone who’s allowed to publish such awful things in a book can’t have thread where people express the truth about that person’s sex and the awful things they’ve written, but here we are.

SpindleInTheWind · 26/04/2022 11:59

Yes that thread appears to have been deleted and the deletion message says that it 'breaks Talk Guidlines from the opening post'. I don't especially remember the opening post, just that it was a link to book review in Spiked online magazine written by Brendan O'Neill.

I take it we're allowed to discuss Grave Lavery's published book and published reviews of Lavery's published book, within Talk Guidelines - on this thread for example?

SpindleInTheWind · 26/04/2022 12:00

Typo ^^

MidsomerMurmurs · 26/04/2022 12:06

Bit bizarre that deletion message. The book in question clearly breaks all guidelines of civil discourse, but nobody is demanding it gets “deleted”. I’d say the more people who are exposed to its graceless narcissism the better.

The writer says that the writer’s penis felt “as though I were laying my own miscarried foetus across my hand”.

Shame its Amazon sales rank is so pitifully low, really.

Doubletoilandtrouble · 26/04/2022 12:12

I am a bit confused… someone has written an entirely book mainly about their penis and we are not allowed to suggest that this person is slightly focused on their own penis?

SpindleInTheWind · 26/04/2022 12:14

This is the deletion message, for those who can't see it:

Thanks for the reports. This thread breaks Talk guidelines from the opening post onwards. We've taken it down now.

Doubletoilandtrouble · 26/04/2022 12:17

Still confused but thank you.

So are we discussing someone who decided to write an entire book about their penis? Anyone read it?

No judgment but why would anyone want to know anything about someone else’s penis? Either you have one (and presumably know what a penis is) or you don’t in which case you probably already know everything you want to know (ranging from zero to enough).

The Lavery book Please Miss: A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Penis is being advertised on the Waterstones website underneath an Oxfam advertising banner to 'Read for Ukraine'.

I would comment on the juxtapositions but it's too early in the day to channel my inner Dante.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/04/2022 12:22

That thread was there for two or three days. Odd that MN has now deleted it. I imagine misgendering featured in the report. We are of course in the world of the upside down where possession of, and obsession with, an organ only male humans grow in the womb is now compatible with demanding to be referred to with she/her pronouns and getting away with it. I hope it is still permissible to say that the reviews and social media comments on this vile-sounding book make Lavery sound thoroughly self-obsessed and grubby.

FromOurHatsToOurFeet · 26/04/2022 12:30

I thought that thread was mainly people laughing at quotes from Brendan O'Neills article whilst lamenting they agreed with Brendan O'Neill.

Imagine misgendering someone who writes an entire book about their penis and a thread being deleted for that misgendering. These really are strange times.

I imagine it is a litigious threat of sorts from the author who claims they don't care what women like us say while also caring very, very deeply.

I also had to edit this to avoid 'misgendering' lying as it is very difficult to avoid when writing about a book which is an ode to someone's penis.

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 26/04/2022 12:38

The book sounds shit

the reviews have been most enjoyable

another thing grace has in common with Laurie Penney

Ameanstreakamilewide · 26/04/2022 12:39

I don't remember any 'misgendering' from the MN posters.🤔

It was Brendan O'Neill who did the 'misgendering'.

So, let me get this straight. Lavery can write that grotesque book, which is full of vile misogyny, but we aren't allowed to talk about an article written about it??

Ameanstreakamilewide · 26/04/2022 12:40

Julie Bindel called LP a 'gender goblin'.

That conjures up a great image.

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 26/04/2022 12:44

I was 'misgendering' because quite frankly I'm not going to refer to someone so obsessed with their dick they compare it to a miscarried foetus, 'she'.

How can we point out and tackle misogyny if we can't correctly sex the men doing it?

SpindleInTheWind · 26/04/2022 12:55

I've no intention of misgendering the author of Please Miss: A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Penis.

Happy to refer to Lavery as "the author of Please Miss: A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Penis". Or maybe "the author of Penis" for short as the long version is a bit cumbersome.

Doubletoilandtrouble · 26/04/2022 12:59

Still being think here… sorry obviously in need of coffee.

So this person writes a book about their penis - and refers to women as people with holes and we are not allowed to call out misogyny?

and mumsnet is on the side of the penis person?

MoltenLasagne · 26/04/2022 13:03

Oh I'm glad others are confused about the deletion as well. Feels like we're through the looking glass.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 26/04/2022 13:03

Or, Spindle - perhaps simply 'Penis'?

Redshoeblueshoe · 26/04/2022 13:09

I'd like to thank Brendan for reading that literary masterpiece.

Is that OK ?
