Here twitter.com/talktv/status/1514542152885452804?s=21&t=g7M6M2EAFww7ZBC6MK5mFQ

Will she get a back lash for this, I wonder?

And I agree it does seem they're somewhat on the ropes with the actual issue of gender replacing sex.

Tanith · 14/04/2022 21:25

@Rainbowshit

Ok I think we need to give some praise here while still keeping the pressure up to commit to single sex spaces. At least the window is shifting back towards some sense.
I agree.

All Boris Johnson has said is that biological men should not compete in women's sports.
Why is this treated as though it's the announcement of the Second Coming, yet Jess Philips is treated with suspicion?
Aren't they both right?
Aren't they both speaking with the elections in mind?

tabbycatstripy · 14/04/2022 21:29

‘Why is this treated as though it's the announcement of the Second Coming, yet Jess Philips is treated with suspicion?’

Because she has been engaged in this argument for years. She was on the Women and Equalities Select Committee. She heard evidence on sports, childhood transition and single sex spaces. She made recommendation to introduce self-ID. She isn’t conflating gender and sex; she prioritises gender over sex.

Johnson doesn’t.

bellinisurge · 14/04/2022 21:33

Absolutely don't see this as a second coming. I see it as an indication that Labour are wavering.

Artichokeleaves · 14/04/2022 21:38

I see it as an indication that not even Labour are stupid enough to not realise they're hurling the election away with both hands.

They're realising they have to hold their noses and make some voter responsive noises.

Which means either

a) they've been full of shit up to this point and have been shouting anti woman and anti safeguarding/anti reality/ horrendously offensive stuff they didn't believe in for political reasons

or

b) they are making 'we've seen the light' noises while reassuring Stonewall that as soon as they get into power they'll jettison all this and go back to full throttle down with females and reality and safeguarding. And are full of shit.

I'm not sure which is worse. But it's way too late to start pretending now.

lovelyweathertoday · 14/04/2022 21:42

We do need to keep pushing. Now she has admitted that women are not the same as TW, we need to push for clarity on women only spaces. As are allowed for in the Equality Act 2010.

We need to start asking the Staniland question as often as possible.

DomesticatedZombie · 14/04/2022 21:43

I agree with all of you saying this is disengenuous bullshit and she can FOTTFSOF.

We're not stupid, Jess.

carefullycourageous · 14/04/2022 21:43

Jess Phillips has done a lot to try to prioritise the victims of domestic violence and I am glad she reads out those names every year in parliament.

I feel so alienated by both sides of this debate.

bellinisurge · 14/04/2022 21:44

It's still a way off the election. Alison Bailey case for starters will show up Stonewall. The tide is turning and this issue is the only thing the Tories have. Labour have to get in front of it or get exposed as utter chumps.

OP posts:
DomesticatedZombie · 14/04/2022 21:44

Labour's position has now become:

Sex and gender are different.
Women matter.
TWAW and women have to shut up and be kind.

The first two are what's changed; the last conclusion is exactly 100% the same.

Until they say exactly what Boris said last week, they can FO.

DomesticatedZombie · 14/04/2022 21:47

By reading out the names compiled by Karen Ingala Smith, who does all the research and work, and takes all the flak for holding firm to her commitments to women and girls? Who is a woman of bravery and integrity and compassion.

I can't say I see Jess' reading out a list as equivalent, to be honest.

I'd like to know what she thinks is the difference between a transwoman and a man.
carefullycourageous · 14/04/2022 21:49

@DomesticatedZombie Yes, it would be better is they weren't read out, I'm sure Hmm

This is what I mean - it is just so alienating.

tabbycatstripy · 14/04/2022 21:50

‘it is just so alienating.’

What is?

‘it is just so alienating.’

What is?

People disagreeing i think…
DomesticatedZombie · 14/04/2022 21:55

And why can't Karen Ingala Smith read them out?

I've been listening to Jess on this topic for years. She's not sincere. Performative outrage. Performative laughter. I know she's a politician; I know this is how they often work.

I guess I find it doubly disappointing that she does have knowledge of the sector and is aware of VAWG and male violence and must understand the issues - yet won't discuss them sincerely. I would have far more respect for her, even if I disagreed, if I felt she was being straightforward and honourable.

I just don't find she has a shred of integrity, I'm afraid.

ResisterRex · 14/04/2022 21:57

How Karen Ingala-Smith was treated by Labour:

Cailleach1 · 14/04/2022 21:57

What's that saying? It's a day late, and a dollar short.

Cismyfatarse · 14/04/2022 21:59

The fence post is so far up her arse it is coming out of her nose.

Still don't trust them.

FOJN · 14/04/2022 22:00

The Tory party made a huge mistake when they proposed self ID as part of reforming the GRA. When they realised their mistake they backtracked. The only thing that Johnson's remarks have done for me is to reassure me that the Conservatives are not going to introduce self ID.

The Labour party were told it was a mistake but they doubled down. Now they have actually realised its a mistake which may have consequences at the ballot box they are speaking out of both sides of their mouth in the hope we will be fooled.

What matters to me now is clawing back what we have lost. I have great respect and admiration for the posters here who talk of golden bridges but for me the abuse if women is unforgivable. I do not aspire to feel like the grown up who wants to negotiate a win/win and give some of the most egregious offenders an out. It never makes me feel like I've been mature, it makes me feel like I have colluded in the theft of women's rights. It feels like further exploitation of female socialisation; women making compromises to make sure everyone gets a little of what they want. Giving an inch in the hope of retaining the rest of the yard doesn't seem to work. I'm firmly in the camp of belligerent resistance. I am not placated by mealy mouthed statements which have come far too late.

They can all fuck off.

Voice0fReason · 14/04/2022 22:01

Sitting firmly on the fence, and that isn't good enough for me.
I want a party that is actually going to protect women's rights, not acknowledge how important they are then give them away.

carefullycourageous · 14/04/2022 22:02

To have the names in Hansard it has to be read by an MP.

Thank you, I wasn't aware of that. The Labour Party aren't fit to clean her boots.

Karen, meanwhile, is far more gracious than I am:

'Jess Phillips does important work on domestic violence and abuse in her role as an MP. I am particularly grateful to her for reading the names of all women killed by men (collected by me), on International Women’s Day every year for the last four years. I know this means a lot to many of the friends and families of women killed and I feel so very honoured to have played a role in getting their names recorded in Hansard. However, I strongly disagree with the opinions she expressed in Mumsnet and Penis News interviews. I also believe that some of the critique (at best), trolling and the death threats she has received are rooted in sexism and misogyny. It reeks. I can disagree with her on this issue (and others) and still respect and feel grateful for her work on men’s violence against women.

DomesticatedZombie · 14/04/2022 22:04

I see, I didn't realise that. I am glad the names are read out.

carefullycourageous · 14/04/2022 22:07

I can disagree with her on this issue (and others) and still respect and feel grateful for her work on men’s violence against women. This from Karen Ingala Smith is an example of a comment expressing disagreement that is not alienating.

It is the way people will write off everything someone does that is good/helpful, because they are not in agreement about this issue. I find it alienating and my view is it is self-defeating.
