I am utterly appalled and distraught at the dreadful miscarriage of justice that has befallen my friend and colleague Imran Ahmad Khan, MP for Wakefield since December 2019. His conviction today is nothing short of an international scandal, with dreadful wider implications for millions of LGBT+ muslims around the world.

I sat through some of the trial. The conduct of this case relied on lazy tropes about LGBT+ people that we might have thought we had put behind us decades ago.

As a former Justice Minister I was prepared to testify about the truly extraordinary sequence of events that has resulted in Imran being put through this nightmare start to his Parliamentary career.

I hope for the return of Imran Ahmad Khan to the public service that has exemplified his life to date. Any other outcome will be a stain on our reputation for justice, and an appalling own goal by Britain as we try to take a lead in reversing the Victorian era prejudice that still disfigures too much of the global statute book.

He’s a sex offender sympathiser and isn’t even trying to hide it at this stage.

Is he suggesting it shouldn't have been prosecuted because Imran Ahmed Kahn is a Muslim and gay?

Surely if anyone has damaged Gay Muslims around the world, its IAK?

Blunt seems to be working to create an association between gays and a certain type of criminal. An association that gay people spent decades erasing and had pretty much succeeded in doing.

What would motivate him to do that? What's the benefit and to whom?

How can he defend that? How? He is very sick.

This is awful. And when I read up on the case, it's even worse. Blunt is doing a massive disservice to the gay community by claiming this conviction is anti-LGBT.

Urgh

Poor boy, having to deal with the trial and then not being believed by an idiot MP. You need a pretty bloody watertight case to convict someone for this type of crime.

If anyone is reinforcing lazy tropes about gay men it's blunt.

A lot of people are calling for the whip to be withdrawn, if that happens no doubt blunt will also blame that on homophobia.

Khan is now 48 ... he would have been 36? Appalling.

I am genuinely shocked by this.

It happened in 2008 and Khan is 48 now, so if my maths is right he was 34.
