Extremely vocal intervention by CB following a jury finding his fellow Conservative Wakefield MP guilty of sexual assault....

@tabbycatstripy

Blunt’s statements risk conflating LBG with being a child molester, suggesting that Khan was convicted because he was gay rather then because he assaulted a child.
Yes, indeed. It's abhorrent.
nauticant · 11/04/2022 22:57

Man is convicted for sexually assaulting a minor: Crispin Blunt talks of his friendship and outrage. Woman (Lisa Townsend) stands up for sex-based rights, Blunt makes formal complaints about her and tries to get her kicked out of her party and fired. Admirable all round
@Organictangerine that he thinks it isnt surprising. That he is so blatant about being ok with child abuse, does surprise me.

There loads of people that think women's rights and abuse of women doesn't matter. That's not rare, sadly. He has plenty if support on that.

Its very rare to find alot of support for someone who believes child abuse is fine.
I’m going to be honest here and say I wouldn’t be surprised if a high percentage of people who are very vocal about supporting self ID, teaching ‘queer theory’ in schools etc (not just people in generalised work agreement) do not have… distasteful views towards the rights of children also. At least much higher than in the general population.

Organictangerine · 11/04/2022 22:57

*woke agreement

MrsOvertonsWindow · 11/04/2022 23:07

The Mail have picked this up and there's some very interesting information about how hard Khan worked to stop the press reporting the case with them having to fight a costly legal battle to be allowed to report on it.
He also apparently claimed that the sexual acts were 'consensual'.(a 38 year old man with a 15 year old)

Blunt's statement declared

"I sat through some of the trial"

Some of it?

WalrusSubmarine · 11/04/2022 23:13

He’s confused ‘Protected Characteristic’ with ‘Impunity’. He’s an idiot.

Thelnebriati · 11/04/2022 23:14

Joanna Cherry on Twitter;
''I’ve stayed a member of the APPG on Global LGBT Rights against my better judgment mainly because I was determined not to be bullied out as a gender critical lesbian but chair Crispin Blunt’s statement tonight is the last straw. I’ll be resigning tomorrow.''

‘If not wanting adults to sexually abuse children makes me a Victorian then stick me in bloomers and call me not amused.’

We are most definitely not amused.

DomesticatedZombie · 11/04/2022 23:40

Listen, if I was a gay man I'd be fucking outraged. They deserve better representation.

DelurkingLawyer · 11/04/2022 23:58

Let’s not forget that with the exception of Joanna Cherry who knew what he was up to, those now scurrying to resign were happy to serve on a committee with him despite all this:

sex-matters.org/posts/updates/crispin-blunt-mp-ordered-to-apologise-for-breach-of-parliamentary-rules-over-attempt-to-make-secret-deal-on-self-id/

Glad they have finally seen what he’s about, but they were happy for him to circulate a paper in secret calling for the dismantlement of single sed spaces.

Abitofalark · 11/04/2022 23:59

It's not just that one assault on one boy, as it appears others gave evidence, according to this report:
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-61026348

LizzieSiddal · 11/04/2022 23:59

Apparently he was in court to listen to Khan’s evidence but not anything else, including the victims.Hmm

Yes, good point but it is worth noting that it isn't an official committee but an unofficial self-selecting common interest group.

They're only resigning now, not because they didn't know what he is like but because they are worried about damage to the image of the campaign and campaigners. How could you sit at a table with him and not know?

Organictangerine · 12/04/2022 00:15

Well they’ll have to make some kind of effort to hold him accountable then. Not the job of women to do it for them - after all, not many men have rushed to our defence when Blunt wanted male sex offenders in women’s spaces, gay or otherwise.

(Can you tell I’m feeling bitter tonight Grin )

DelurkingLawyer · 12/04/2022 00:18

@Abitofalark oh they all knew, he’s just gone and said the quiet part out loud and suddenly transformed himself into a liability.

I’d forgotten but reading the link again they were also criticised for being insufficiently transparent about funding for their Unofficial Self-Selecting Interest Group (a much better name). Who was providing some of the funding? One guess.

WeeBisom · 12/04/2022 00:26

It's a tale as old as time. Everyone is against sex crimes until someone from a special group is convicted (whether it be a LGBT Muslim, a religious leader, a beloved movie star, etc) and then the excuses begin to roll in...he didn't really do it, the victim is lying, it's a stitch up, blah blah.

It's also completely ridiculous he's tried to blame this conviction on anti LGBT attitudes.

Abitofalark · 12/04/2022 00:34

Yes, I vaguely recall something about that - was it that they were providing the secretariat for the group? I might be confusing it with a different APPG but that definitely happened with one of them.

dropthevipers · 12/04/2022 01:12

In a surprise development, The Graun is reporting the Blunt debacle-thought they were going to go all WiSpa on it.

Imnobody4 · 12/04/2022 01:23

He seems to be doubling down. Apparently the event was minor on any scale!

even by Crispin's standards...
PurgatoryOfPotholes · 12/04/2022 02:54

More resignations have followed. I wonder if any will reflect on the warning signs they ignored.

Blunt's not received many likes, but here's one.

extract

Imran Khan’s defence asked the jury to give “considerable weight” to numerous “people of high standing prepared to put their name forward in support of him.”

They included Gravesham MP Adam Holloway, who described Imran Khan as “highly intelligent” with “forthright views”. And Valery Tsepkalo, a Belarusian politician turned opposition activist who said he was “shocked” to find out about the allegations of sexual assault.

Its appears they have unliked it and not many people noticed the did like it in the first place.
