This GC book!, says a TRA, tagging the Oxford University Press, that bastion of critical thinking that is, you know, doing the job that an academic press should be doing.

Que a plethora of replies, memes of book-burning etc. The best responses are those saying they hadn't seen the book but thanks for the free advertising, and posting THANKS FOR YOUR ORDER screenshots from the OUP.

Fantastic own goal, but to see these overwhelmingly pro-GC, hell, even pro-free speech responses even on captured Twitter is quite a turnaround. Perhaps after all Emily Bridges, Lia Thompson and Kier Starmer have shone more sunlight on this than even they anticipated!

In the meantime I'm watching the replies roll out with popcorn in hand. Truly top-notch entertainment!

Is this really true? Surrogacy is illegal where Ugla/Owl is from and I would find it very interesting to learn that Ugla/Owl was circumventing that through links to the UK (or other countries?).

They live in the UK, I believe.

MagicMix · 13/05/2022 10:19

Yes, I know they do. But I think you might have mixed them up with some other people because I have never seen any indication that they have a child, through surrogacy or otherwise. And at the risk of being outing, we have mutual friends and acquaintances and I know that the anti-surrogacy laws are generally well supported in Iceland, so that's why I was surprised that I had never heard anything about it. If you have a link, though, I'd be interested to see it.

Sorry for off topic :/

No, apologies are due from me as you're right. I was thinking of Jake and Hannah Graf.

I got my copy of Holly's book yesterday, having heard of it because of the 'boycott'. Coincidentally I met a GC friend for lunch yesterday and she'd also got a copy, so I hope OUP and Holly have done well from all the free publicity on social media.

Also congrats to OUP for a very measured, sensible response, and for setting the bar for other organisations who are targeted by similar campaigns, and showing that it's possible to respond with integrity and professionalism.

Mine came earlier in the week, very much looking forward to starting it tomorrow. Thanks for posting OUP's response to the protesters. They got the tone just right I think. There's an interview by Joan Smith of Holly Lawford-Smith about it in the Telegraph web.archive.org/web/20220513164704/www.telegraph.co.uk/women/life/trans-lobby-tried-cancel-book-dont-want-people-asking-questions/

Thanks for the article very interesting. I didn't realise some states in Australia had self ID.

Holly L-S has contributed to this book, published last week, which is free to download from the UCL website www.uclpress.co.uk/collections/ro_homepage_products/products/186670 (It's chapter 4 - a discussion about gender, between Holly and another philosopher, Michael Hauskeller).

FemaleAndLearning · 18/05/2022 11:45

Thanks for the free download link.
