This GC book!, says a TRA, tagging the Oxford University Press, that bastion of critical thinking that is, you know, doing the job that an academic press should be doing.

twitter.com/jthomastremblay/status/1512212885627236352

Que a plethora of replies, memes of book-burning etc. The best responses are those saying they hadn't seen the book but thanks for the free advertising, and posting THANKS FOR YOUR ORDER screenshots from the OUP.

Fantastic own goal, but to see these overwhelmingly pro-GC, hell, even pro-free speech responses even on captured Twitter is quite a turnaround. Perhaps after all Emily Bridges, Lia Thompson and Kier Starmer have shone more sunlight on this than even they anticipated!

In the meantime I'm watching the replies roll out with popcorn in hand. Truly top-notch entertainment!

@Wintersonata

I've never worked in publishing, but have the impression there are lots of junior staff from very privileged backgrounds who've been supported by family through years of unpaid or low-paid work experience placements and internships until they finally land a proper job

Gaspode that may well be true but those who object JKR and anyone else who dares to disagree with them do not come exclusively from privileged backgrounds.
I don’t see why having a privileged background makes it more likely to try to ban books.

I'm generalising, yes, and I may well be wrong, but I suppose it's a combination of things that led me to this supposition. Young people from middle-class, affluent backgrounds are more likely to do Arts/Humanities/Social Sciences (i.e. non-vocational) degree subjects, which gives them a higher chance these days of being indoctrinated about gender ideology while students. They then end up in occupations/industries where they mix with other similar people.

The culture in publishing seems very earnest and authoritarian these days. Sensitivity readers. Accusations of cultural appropriation if an author writes about something outside their direct experience. Attempts to get their employers to refuse to publish certain authors or books exploring certain topics. Attempts to get certain authors and books removed from shortlists for prestigious prizes. Books withdrawn or heavily edited after publication because of wrongthink.

None of this seems to me to stem from a genuine understanding of what makes our society so unequal and far more difficult for some more than others. People who had a genuinely privileged start in life have to work hard to understand what life is like for those who didn't. Tony Benn managed it. George Orwell wrote seminal works about his attempt to do this. The gender ideologists seem by contrast to be very limited in their ability to empathise with a wide range of people and respect all sides of an argument.

I've pre-ordered the book and looking forward to receiving it.

I have worked in publishing and it is exactly like that. Also, people who can afford to do an MA in publishing studies.

SingToTheSky · 15/04/2022 13:28

Brilliant :o wish I had the money spare to order it now, but I’ve got it on my wish list

SpinningTooFastIWantToGetOff · 15/04/2022 15:28

Ordered Wink
Don't generally like hardbacks but the need to show OUP that the book is a winner got the better of me Smile
Thanks for the tip, was not aware of Holly previously.

Fox Fisher, Drew Davies and Ugla Stefanía Kristjönudóttir Jónsdóttir said they could no longer work with the Blair Partnership, the London-based agency that represents all aspects of the Harry Potter author’s work, because they were not convinced the company “supports our rights at all avenues”.

And, I strongly suspect, no fucks were given.

Crcohetmonster · 18/04/2022 05:07

But ugla and fox are the same person. Is fox claiming to be 2 people now??

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 18/04/2022 06:44

No, Ugla is Owl, Fox's partner. They are the couple who 'used' a surrogate to have a child just around the start of lockdown. Made an informational video for Stonewall recently about the importance of thinking about your fertility options before seeking medical treatment as part of transition.

Crcohetmonster · 18/04/2022 06:48

Sorry, my bad. I’ve just googled more So basically a weirdo straight couple and a bloke who churns out rubbish books. Bet the publishers were gutted.

missfliss · 18/04/2022 07:02

Also have worked on publishing and yes, all that ^^ 100%

CervixSampler · 12/05/2022 09:31

My copy is arriving on Tuesday 😃 perfect timing as I'll have finished JKR's latest Strike book by then.

FemaleAndLearning · 12/05/2022 09:43

My copy has arrived. Looking forward to reading it.

TheSandgroper · 12/05/2022 09:47

Glimmer and Holly chatting overnight. Holly is in Scotland doing something re the book, she says towards the end. m.youtube.com/watch?v=YHxiOQzN7vc

RoyalCorgi · 12/05/2022 09:52

My copy's arrived today. Very much looking forward to reading it. Both the Helen Joyce and Kathleen Stock books have sold well, so hopefully this one will as well. Publishers might wake up and realise that there's a market out there for books on this topic. If they've got any sense at all, they will have spotted that the reading public is overwhelmingly female and middle-aged, and therefore exactly the demographic most likely to buy this kind of book. Whereas the angry young males organising boycotts don't tend to buy books anyway.

NotAGirl · 12/05/2022 10:00

My copy has arrived, I need to finish my current book before starting.

The boycott didn’t really work this time, I’d love to know the actual sales figures vs predicted sales

@Andante57 There’s a website called Art Bollocks which specialises in this and comes up with suggestions for text for artists

OMG, that's too good.

My work explores the relationship between Bauhausian sensibilities and football chants. With influences as diverse as Munch and L Ron Hubbard, new synergies are created from both mundane and transcendant meanings.
Ever since I was a teenager I have been fascinated by the essential unreality of meaning. What starts out as yearning soon becomes finessed into a carnival of defeat, leaving only a sense of dread and the dawn of a new beginning.
As shifting derivatives become frozen through frantic and critical practice, the viewer is left with a testament to the inaccuracies of our era.

Looks like it's done by the same software that produces that Owen Jones 'journalist' bot.

This is Mx Tremblay's own magnum opus. I have a degree in English from Cambridge and I can confidently assert that it is utter bollocks.

What a beautiful word salad.

That is truly hilarious.

All he needs is some nice alliteration and has language would be just like that of Alan Moore's 'V'.

Is this really true? Surrogacy is illegal where Ugla/Owl is from and I would find it very interesting to learn that Ugla/Owl was circumventing that through links to the UK (or other countries?).

Nah. V's verbosity may be vexing but it has verisimilitude, unlike the vainglorious twaddle I vouchsafed in that post.
