This GC book!, says a TRA, tagging the Oxford University Press, that bastion of critical thinking that is, you know, doing the job that an academic press should be doing.

twitter.com/jthomastremblay/status/1512212885627236352

Que a plethora of replies, memes of book-burning etc. The best responses are those saying they hadn't seen the book but thanks for the free advertising, and posting THANKS FOR YOUR ORDER screenshots from the OUP.

Fantastic own goal, but to see these overwhelmingly pro-GC, hell, even pro-free speech responses even on captured Twitter is quite a turnaround. Perhaps after all Emily Bridges, Lia Thompson and Kier Starmer have shone more sunlight on this than even they anticipated!

In the meantime I'm watching the replies roll out with popcorn in hand. Truly top-notch entertainment!

@AuxArmesCitoyens

Of course it's a real name, it sounds typically French Canadian to me though I don't know his background. And FWIW I agree, the premise of his book sounds solid, albeit wrapped up in specialist academic discourse.
I think it's the combination of Jean-Thomas (sounding similar to John Thomas - a euphemism for penis) along with a last name that sounds a little like 'tremble'. I appreciate it French/Québécois it won't have that connotation but to an English speaking ear it can sound a little unfortunate.
VelvetChairGirl · 09/04/2022 18:44

@VaginaRegina

This is Mx Tremblay's own magnum opus. I have a degree in English from Cambridge and I can confidently assert that it is utter bollocks.
the line between reality and satire has truely been erased.

@VeryLongBeeeeep

And here’s me just breathing in … and out.

How very heterorespirationormative of you.

Can I get a t-shirt with that on?
thinkingaboutLangCleg · 09/04/2022 19:56

God, I love Mumsnet vipers! In the middle of all this misogynist bullshit, so much earthy female laughter.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/04/2022 20:29

@PrelateChuckles, yes, that's how I read it, but most on this thread see it as a call to boycott that particular book, unless I'm misreading that too.

M. Tremblay's book sounds like it should be serialised in Pseuds' Corner in Private Eye. Once it was explained, I could see the point in a book about air pollution and class, but hand on heart I didn't understand what it was about until someone translated.

StrangeLookingParasite · 09/04/2022 20:42

Well, haven't you made a tit of yourself, Mx Tremblay.

Ordered the book.

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 09/04/2022 21:12

@StrangeLookingParasite

Well, haven't you made a tit of yourself, Mx Tremblay.

Ordered the book.

Can someone possibly identifying as Mx make a tit of themself?

Tit sounds awfully gendered.

Maybe Mx Tremblay has made an awful chest of themself?

Voice0fReason · 09/04/2022 21:48

@NotAGirl

nepeta · 09/04/2022 23:57

I might not have heard about this book for a while longer without this. So thank you, Mx Tremblay.

SidewaysOtter · 10/04/2022 00:14

I’d not have heard of this without that tweet so Mr Tremblay, thank - and I cannot stress this enough - you.

Awkwardy · 12/04/2022 17:50

'Petition against Gender-Critical Feminism
Gender-Critical Feminism by Holly Lawford-Smith is scheduled to publish this summer. We, as Oxford University Press employees and authors, are asking management to reconsider their decision to publish this title. The theory of gender-critical feminism attempts to invalidate trans identities. At a time when transgender rights are under attack, we believe that the publication of this book will embolden and legitimize the views of transphobes and contribute to the harm that is perpetrated against the trans community globally.

The author has made her beliefs transparent on her own website with statements such as “transwomen are not women” and “Gender critical feminism […] clashes with trans activism.” We feel that the publication of this book is not aligned with Oxford University Press’s “objective of excellence in research, scholarship, and education, by publishing worldwide.” OUP may claim to be impartial, but this author’s scholarship is certainly not.

We are asking OUP to prioritize the wellbeing of its trans employees, trans authors, and the trans community as a whole over the potential profit that this book may generate.

This petition will be sent to David Clark, Niko Pfund, Sophie Goldsworthy, Damon Zucca, and Anna-Lise Santella. If you sign, your name will be visible to these recipients.'

Do they have the first idea how ridiculous that is?

JFC. This reads like a parody Confused
FemaleAndLearning · 13/04/2022 07:32

Oh my goodness, they are asking for a book to be banned because the author does not go along with the mantra transwomen are women.

MoiraQueen · 13/04/2022 07:44

Can't see the original Tweet, which is funny as I'm hardly ever on Twitter, never post and follow about 5 people...one of whom is JK, which may be the issueSmile

CervixSampler · 13/04/2022 07:55

I was going to wait until it was released but I think I'll pre-order. Also ordering Kathleen Stock's book. I still need to finish reading The Second Sex. Must do better with my feminist edification. Thanks for this OP. I love books and there's no such thing as too many books!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/04/2022 08:02

Reminds me of this nonsense. www.theguardian.com/books/2020/jun/22/authors-quit-jk-rowling-agency-over-transgender-rights

I've never worked in publishing, but have the impression there are lots of junior staff from very privileged backgrounds who've been supported by family through years of unpaid or low-paid work experience placements and internships until they finally land a proper job. Hardly surprising that very few people from less affluent backgrounds or from ethnic minorities can do any of that. The ones who make it in the end seem to delude themselves into believing they are there on merit and have experienced struggle because they didn't get a plum job straight from university. They haven't a clue.

Four authors represented by JK Rowling’s literary agency have resigned after accusing the company of declining to issue a public statement of support for transgender rights.

Fox Fisher, Drew Davies and Ugla Stefanía Kristjönudóttir Jónsdóttir said they could no longer work with the Blair Partnership, the London-based agency that represents all aspects of the Harry Potter author’s work, because they were not convinced the company “supports our rights at all avenues”. One other author is understood to have also quit the agency but wishes to remain anonymous.

From the same article:

Earlier [in 2020], it was reported that staff at Rowling’s publishing house, Hachette, were told they could not refuse to work on her new children’s book because they objected to her views on transgender rights.

CervixSampler · 13/04/2022 08:04

Ordered 😃 It's going to be an early birthday present to myself.

WinterTrees · 13/04/2022 08:06

Gender-critical feminism [...] clashes with trans-activism

...And therefore women must give way to their superiors?

Jeez, how soaked in entitlement do you have to be to expect, in one of the many, many instances where ideologies clash, for the opposing one to be stamped out and silenced at your say so?

Wintersonata · 13/04/2022 08:21

I've never worked in publishing, but have the impression there are lots of junior staff from very privileged backgrounds who've been supported by family through years of unpaid or low-paid work experience placements and internships until they finally land a proper job

Gaspode that may well be true but those who object JKR and anyone else who dares to disagree with them do not come exclusively from privileged backgrounds.
I don’t see why having a privileged background makes it more likely to try to ban books.

Not to mention illegal, due to maya.
