Johnson “sad” about the reaction from LGBT groups, says he’s 100% committed to a ban on gay conversion therapy, but there complexities and sensitivities about the area of gender, and he thinks there are things that need to be worked out.

Determined to tackle prejudice.

Re. trans conversion therapy, it wasn’t something he thought he would have to consider in great detail. These are novel concepts. He doesn’t think it’s reasonable for kids to be deemed Gillick competent in trans treatments. He doesn’t think males should be competing in female sports. Women should have spaces which are dedicated to women.

That’s as far as his thinking has developed, and if it puts him in conflict with others, he wants to work it out. Is sympathetic to transitioners. But these are complex issues and it takes thought to get it right.

I was just about to start a thread!

Never thought I'd be glad to have Boris as PM for any reason...

tabbycatstripy · 06/04/2022 12:24

I’m emotional. Squarely put the people who would put kids at risk like this in their place, and sounded sensible and compassionate.

OP posts:
Igmum · 06/04/2022 12:25

And sensible at long last!

BellatrixOnABadDay · 06/04/2022 12:27

With each point he continued to make, I was shouting 'yes!' at the telly. Thank god for some sense.

SiobhanSharpe · 06/04/2022 12:27

If only senior Labour politicians could say the same.

mynameisnotkate · 06/04/2022 12:27

I’m torn between being grateful that the PM is saying this, and worried that the association with a lying, incompetent Tory will reinforce the idea that this is bad in the minds of people who are on the fence and don’t think much. I wish there was a broader range of political figures saying stuff like this. To some extent it adds fuel to the ‘only right wing bigots think this’ nonsense.

tabbycatstripy · 06/04/2022 12:28

I don’t see how it can go that way, Myname. People in general don’t think young people should have healthy body parts removed.

But Boris is the one in government. And likely to remain in government- labour don't have a chance in hell of getting in. So I'm glad.
Notoironing · 06/04/2022 12:29

Wow!

AndAsIfByMagic · 06/04/2022 12:31

We posted a thread at the same time, OP.

Maybe the brave pioneering Tory MP who came out as trans and was supported unquestioningly by his party despite all of his minor eccentricities will mitigate some of that perception.

(I do hope that person gets a lot more media coverage.)

What time was this on?

tabbycatstripy · 06/04/2022 12:43

It was associated with the globally beloved JKR long before this, and look what they did there, to her. Other longstanding voices of the Left have spoken out and retreated, understandably scared of the abuse they were getting. I don't think we are dealing with rational people.

Rayner not happy at all. She calls Johnson “a liability”.

Yep.

stealthninjamum · 06/04/2022 12:52

I have such mixed feelings about this. Dd1, is a bright young teen with autism, yet has been sucked into this. She has at least five or six trans friends and she happily told me about one whose parents had agreed to let them try medication to transition. I am a bigot because I suggested the ‘boy’ probably needs love and support from professionals before puberty blockers. Dd1 feels I am just a bigot and this whole issue is driving a wedge between us.

So I am torn, if I have to vote Boris to stop dd1s friends from transitioning before they are old enough to understand the consequences then I’m afraid I will.

tabbycatstripy · 06/04/2022 12:54

‘So I am torn, if I have to vote Boris to stop dd1s friends from transitioning before they are old enough to understand the consequences then I’m afraid I will.’

So will I. Nothing will persuade me that it makes sense to issue kids with puberty blockers without intensive psychological support from people who are not ideologically in favour of the concept of ‘trans kids’ with innate gender identities.

There might be a few children for whom it is the only option. A few. But I agree with Johnson, I don’t think children are competent to make that decision themselves.

Boris how can you sleep at night knowing there are men in womens prisons? You can change this-right now-just do it.

I’m getting a sneaky pleasure from imagining Caroline Nokes and Maria Miller chewing lemons right now.

We've got the prime minister saying this.

Which is vital no matter who that prime minister is.

And is the result of the persistent hard work and dedication of individual and groups of women often at great cost to themselves.

Boris saying this out loud is due to them.
