Why was gender dysphoria changed from being a mental illness?

But I would imagine that most people still see it as a mental illness - what qualifies it not to be?

Most people who have contributed to this thread have taken one extreme position or it's opposite. I have tried to see both sides of the argument and suggested compromises. I have written on this thread or elsewhere that I'm nor happy with self-identification and I can see the problem with quite large numbers of teenage girls who consider themselves to be trans.

When it comes to social contagion I think that it can and does happen but for the majority of the cases that we saw in the past there was a very real condition that professionals were able to help with. It wasn't just that they were neurotic or imagining it. The science of brain scans helps us to understand what it really is.
