It appears she said at the BAFTAs 'I am here for all of the witches... bar one'

Disappointing but not unexpected.

Oh and as an aside love the word balderdash, very underused nowadays Grin

@LaTisaniere

The only impact that this thread and plenty of others like it are having, is pushing away women who are seeking a place to talk about these things. Do you have any idea of the number of spaces that have been created by women who were bullied off of this board, or who simply lurked and didn't like seeing people being shut down and called idiots for not having the same opinion? Women with a VERY wide range of opinions who are somehow still able to have discussions without it resulting in insults? But no, no problems here.
I'm sure there are women who don't like this board, for a variety of different reasons, and if they've chosen to make a space which suits them better than fair play to them.

Just a note about the lurkers though - there was a thread on this board around Christmas time where many lurkers delurked in order to express support for the board. There were hundreds and hundreds of posts. I was surprised at just how many lurkers are out there, listening and watching and how many since then have started to join in conversations. That's why many of us say that conversations are often aimed at, not at the posters who have often come here with a preconceived bias of what this board is, but at the lurkers behind the scenes.

I fully realise that there are hundreds of lurkers who are in support of this board, I saw that post myself, as well. There's just another side of that with lots of people who do not feel welcome - it stands to reason that the ones who do feel welcome will de-lurk at some point, and the ones who don't, won't.

Exactly
(I saw that other thread too)

I've just searched this thread to find the posts that called other posters 'idiots' or 'stupid'. I didn't remember seeing any of this, and I thought I must have missed a lot of pages or something.

I found one single post (on Tuesday) where one poster said 'You're either being stupid or obtuse' to someone who appeared to be wilfully misunderstanding something.

'Stupid' and 'idiot' were used a few times about Emma Watson.

Most of the other incidences of these two words were @EeeICouldRipATissue, @BlindGirlMcSqueaky or @LaTisaniere saying something like 'are you saying I'm stupid?' or 'you keep calling others idiots'.

Waitwhat23 · 17/03/2022 12:02

@LaTisaniere

So is the general consensus that only people who have absolutely all of the knowledge on the subject, know all of the terms, have all of the links of articles etc stashed away, have debating skills (that have to be at least as good as yours) can participate on this board? Because that's more and more what it's sounding like. Comments of "your arguments just aren't good enough" "your debating skills aren't good enough" "you don't know enough" are leading me here. If that's the case and this is not a place for anyone without all of those skills, only Professional Feminists, then fair enough.

If that is not the case, then I think that the comments of posters lacking intelligence, knowledge, the perfect terms and debating skills should stop, as they're being used as reasons for not engaging.

Nope. Despite your hyperbole, I am not suggesting that posters (especially new posters) know every term, every bit of terminology or all the history of this debate. What I'm suggesting is that if they go into a conversation where they are making statements which are broad generalisations about what they believe the views of this board to be and they disagree, that it's probably a better idea to have at least a overview of the debate. I would do that for any kind of discussion I got into, whether that was politics, food or cats so that I was having an informed discussion.

We've had many new posters ask questions and I've seen the posters on here take considerable time and trouble to signpost to threads, articles and evidence and explain background, history and legal precedent.

LaTisaniere · 17/03/2022 12:02

@OldCrone I'm not going to go through 856 messages. Allow me to put it in a different way than "idiots" and "stupid" - they have had their intelligence questioned.

LaTisaniere · 17/03/2022 12:05

@Waitwhat23 I wasn't referring to your post where you suggested a poster learn the terminology so that it's easier to understand and to avoid misunderstandings - that's reasonable. I'm talking about the posters that you see all over this board who have made judgements and digs on peoples debating skills, stating that they don't have enough knowledge or intelligence and they're therefore invited to leave.

BlindGirlMcSqueaky · 17/03/2022 12:07

There are a lot of deleted comments on this thread. A lot.

It's easy to search for keywords.

Here's my search for 'stupid':
www.mumsnet.com/SearchArch?mustmatch=stupid&dontmatch=&nickname=&src_displ_option=s_m_d_m&fromDate=15%2F03%2F22&toDate=17%2F03%2F22&topicmode=chs&chosentops=5365

And for 'idiot':
www.mumsnet.com/SearchArch?mustmatch=idiot&dontmatch=&nickname=&src_displ_option=s_m_d_m&fromDate=15%2F03%2F22&toDate=17%2F03%2F22&topicmode=chs&chosentops=5365

Only about a dozen posts to look at on this thread for each - and some of them are quotes of a previous post.

Can you link to one post which questioned someone's intelligence? (Apart from posts about Emma Watson.) I don't recall seeing any, but it's a long thread and I may have skimmed over some of it and missed them.

LaTisaniere · 17/03/2022 12:11

@OldCrone I'm (once again) not going through all of the messages on this thread, even with the search feature. They're there, have a look for yourself if you don't believe me. I suppose that if I'm lying, myself and about 4 or 5 other posters must've all had a secret meeting and decided that all of us are going to lie about that simultaneously.

Waitwhat23 · 17/03/2022 12:13

This board has a very specific set of guidelines which means its very easy to have a post deleted. I've had one deleted in the past for using a word which describes the top of a mountain. Another for suggesting that another poster was taking screenshots (they were). Many posts are mass reported by people not interested in the discussion at all.

Deletions are a inaccurate way of gauging how a conversation has gone.

You're not going to look at the posts even when I've posted a link to help you.

You expect me to look again for something I failed to find but that you insist is there, but you don't want to post links to help me find them. No I don't believe you. I've looked. They're not there.

Happy for you to post links to prove me wrong.

allmywhat · 17/03/2022 12:17

That seems okay. I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't feel welcome on 99.99% of all discussion boards on the Internet (they're mostly male-dominated, for starters.) I'm not sure why this should be the one place on the Internet that everyone feels welcome.

(I do in fact have some ideas on why this expectation of rolling out the welcome mat is being imposed on the regular posters on this board, by extraordinarily stroppy and entitled people who speak with open contempt about the community here. But I guess we all have to politely pretend not to see these dynamics.)

Except I read them and their insulting content.
EeeICouldRipATissue · 17/03/2022 12:23

Why should they search for links on a thread that everyone has access to and can look for themselves?
It's an utter waste of time.
'' Find me an example where it was said (insert word here)
Person dutifully goes off, does so
2nd person
'' Ah, see, here's 301 ways why it doesn't really say that.
Let's define intelligence.
Can we not insult other women now, I'm not blowing smoke up another woman's arse just because we disagree
Etc
Etc
Ad nauseum
People can search and see on this thread.
Intelligence HAS been questioned to put it mildly.

EeeICouldRipATissue · 17/03/2022 12:25

Same!
There's still a few milder ones standing L, people are capable of reading the thread for themselves.

Blossomtoes · 17/03/2022 12:25

They certainly are. The policy seems to be to delete anything that’s reported without even looking at it. I’ve seen some completely innocuous posts deleted.

Probably because there's an astounding lack of it on display.

OldCrone · 17/03/2022 12:27

Must be in the deleted posts which I didn't see before they were deleted. It's good that the reporting system on MN works isn't it? So if people are abusive they have their posts deleted.

Quite.

If you say something stupid, I'm not sure why people aren't entitled to point out that you've made a stupid comment.

I've been called stupid on here before now. Usually because people have misunderstood what I said or what I intended to say. If I think this is because I have expressed myself poorly I make an attempt at a better explanation. Sometimes it's just people being insulting because they disagree and have no argument.

I'm not sure why anyone would be so sensitive about being labelled stupid by anonymous posters on a forum.

allmywhat · 17/03/2022 12:42

By now you have made dozens of posts of hostile blustering nonsense on this thread. You are clearly arguing just for the sake of having an argument. It's like talking to a Monty Python character.

I guess I'll leave you to it? It's amusing enough, but not as funny as Monty Python.

Yes women should never question. Just do as they are told.
