I joined Twitter, and was shocked at how much Trans allies hate us.....

I joined Twitter a couple of days ago, just to lurk and read links from Mumsnet. I found the account of a man that I know. I knew his friendship group is generally TWAW (gamers, cosplay, geeks, etc) but I was so shocked at the vitriol addressed to TERFS and JKR in particular. I have to see this person socially sometimes, because of family, but I can't get over how much he detests me (for I am TERF and proud)
Not sure what this post is for really. Maybe just to see if other people are horrified by what they see coming from otherwise "normal" individuals?

Many men are incredibly misogynistic. And they feel they can do it to gender critical women with impunity at the moment.

TooManyAnimals94 · 12/03/2022 18:34

I'm not excusing it and obviously don't know word for word what this man is sharing/posting but I think a lot of it comes from ignorance and idealism.
Men do not understand how threatening the trans activists are towards women and either they don't care or get involved or they join the side that seems the most woke and trendy to fit in.
I often see similar stuff from so called friends and sometimes I will discuss it in person with them but I would never say anything on social media as you just lay yourself open to abuse.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 12/03/2022 18:34

What I cannot understand is the vitriol, anger, hate and actual threats from these people men mostly thrown at us for standing our ground that biology is real.

Yet they tell us we're the angry, hateful evil ones.

You think your mind can't boggle any more until it does. Confused

TheCurrywurstPrion · 12/03/2022 18:37

I think Twitter brings out the worst in a lot of people. It’s very combative and controversial tweets tend to get attention, which means people sometimes write more and more horrible things, which in turn breeds anger.

Must be pretty awful to see someone you know and realise they’re such a dick though.

ToastofLandon · 12/03/2022 18:44

Any examples of what he said specifically OP? How familiar are you with him? Is this something you could challenge, or no?

SunshineThelma · 12/03/2022 18:47

This is why I don't use Twitter any more.

Ditto
KittyLeMew · 12/03/2022 18:48

Sometimes I think they are typical keyboard warriors who would never say these kinds of things to women IRL

Other times I think they are misogynistic psychopaths and the cognitive dissonance is frankly terrifying.

I try to steer clear of it all most of the time. People like Prior, Montgomery et al are so spiteful and full of hatred (jealousy) it’s just more pleasant to go through life without experiencing their vitriol.

SunniDelite · 12/03/2022 18:48

I think the worst thing is my adult daughter has a close friendship with him and has similar opinions. She thinks I've been absorbing TERF propaganda (I know! How fucking patronising! Her old Mum couldn't possibly have thoughts of her own!) :(

@ToastofLandon I've never posted on Twitter and have a pseudonym, so I wouldn't actually reply. He'd posted, for example, that piece by Julie Bindel in response to Laurie Penny's claim to have suffered DPTSD for getting bad reviews.
He made it seem like Julie and JKR were making fun of people with DPTSD. Cue horror from his TR mates... Also lot of general "vile terfs" posts.

Alisae · 12/03/2022 18:59

A friends ex was the most vicious TRA that I personally knew. I was quite able to keep things civil, but he’d often end up in a frothing rage when I refused to capitulate to his TWAW stance (she stopped bringing him out in the end).

When she found all the trans porn and hook up sites/messages she dumped him.

Not saying that all of the male ‘allies’ are running from their own sexuality/homophobia (‘If he is a woman, then I’m not gay) as most are just bog standard misogynists. But he genuinely took it personally that I wouldn’t say TWAW.

He also threatened Dfriend with death if she ever told anyone, as he had an image to maintain.

Lovely chap Hmm

BootsAndRoots · 12/03/2022 19:01

Pretty much most men who state the same opinion as those like JKR do not receive abuse, it's only women who are on the receiving end of the abuse. And that pretty much tells you what is going on.

It's also been shown that a lot of the men who attack women have had a history of transphobia themselves, so I don't believe for one second they care about trans people.

SevenWaystoLeave · 12/03/2022 19:02

He made it seem like Julie and JKR were making fun of people with DPTSD.

That is quite literally what they were doing.

SunniDelite · 12/03/2022 19:09

@SevenWaystoLeave
Nope, it was Laurie Penny who was making light of DPTSD by saying her poor book reviews caused her to suffer DPTSD.

So Julie and JKR were "literally" making fun of Laurie Penny for claiming her lack of literal success caused her trauma.

They were.

Yes.
Making fun of others mental health.
You even say it yourself but don't seem to think they were at the same time Confused
How the hell can others get to decide whether others mental health is '' worthy enough'' or' 'how real' ' it is?
Seriously people are OK with that?
Not for me.

thinkningaboutit · 12/03/2022 20:51

I see the Scottish actor appeared back on Twitter yesterday. I set an alert and forgot about it. When I checked my phone this evening Ive been blown away by the number of tweets he's posted in one day. Not to get into the ins and outs of that case but its mind blowing to me the arrogance people display. Twitter isn't a healthy place - for all sides.

Circumferences · 12/03/2022 20:54

Well it's rather hypocritical to stand with people who repeatedly issue rape and death threats and send unwanted pictures of their erection to a victim of domestic abuse, then complain some bad book reviews gave you trauma....

Threads?
When you say threads do you mean what is threads on here people have started, or on actual Twitter itself?
Because yes, people can look for themselves and see what the tweets actually were between them.
It was making fun.

Isn't it.

VelvetChairGirl · 12/03/2022 21:29

twitter is a toxic misogynistic hole that deserves to sink, I am amazed countries have not banned it, it clearly supports incels, look at what twitter police and what they leave up.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 12/03/2022 21:35

Twitter is definitely a total cesspit.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 12/03/2022 21:36

It sounds like your friend/family member is at home there though, OP, I sympathise.
