I joined Twitter a couple of days ago, just to lurk and read links from Mumsnet. I found the account of a man that I know. I knew his friendship group is generally TWAW (gamers, cosplay, geeks, etc) but I was so shocked at the vitriol addressed to TERFS and JKR in particular. I have to see this person socially sometimes, because of family, but I can't get over how much he detests me (for I am TERF and proud)
Not sure what this post is for really. Maybe just to see if other people are horrified by what they see coming from otherwise "normal" individuals?

Every time I see a TRA foaming at the mouth/keyboard, I think of these two quotes:

Germaine Greer: “Women have very little idea of how much men hate them.”

Andrea Dworkin: “Many women, I think, resist feminism because it is an agony to be fully conscious of the brutal misogyny which permeates culture, society, and all personal relationships.”

I used to think these were extreme, exaggerated takes. Listen to a TRA for any length of time and I start to see what Dworkin & Greer were getting at.

For me: "men fear women will laugh at them, women fear men will kill them."

The narcissistic rage comes from being laughed at and dismissed, more than anything else. It's all about control.

I stopped my active account on Twitter because It was making me constantly angry- at one point I got my blood pressure checked i was so worried at my symptoms- and because I misread someone's tweet about something really random and made a sarky comment which upset them. It really does bring out the absolute worst in people. Sticks and stones etc but I agree with LP that having a flood of angry or jeering words upended straight into your hand in a way that isn't replicated anywhere else is very distressing. I think the nearest would be a crowd all booing at once - yes I think that could be quite traumatic. One of the things I love about Julie Bindel is her one liners but I'm bloody glad they've never been aimed at me.

That said, LP doesn't have to state obvious nonsense, or publish it, or promote it on twitter.

I've been struck reading Maya Forstater's witness statement (elsewhere on here) that the people who policed her hardest and moved against her most forcefully at her employer were women. There are a huge number of bien pensant women who cannot even imagine someone other than the stereotypical 'right wing evangelical' or at most 'smug older mum off Mumsnet' thinking differently from them on this. They are progressive, kind, soft left and inclusive. Therefore so are all their collective thoughts. They have switched off or on whatever piece of your brain is required to ignore any of the 'hang on a minute' moments most of us have had to notice. It isn't just men who hate us; for lots of women, we are the old witches and inclusion never quite gets as far as us.

The worst thing about guys like the one you described, OP, is the hypocrisy. You can bet your last quid that all the TWAW bollocks doesn't apply to them when they want to get laid. Same for gay guys - they don't really believe TMAM either. It's all performative, and a handy excuse for outright misogyny.

They're all woke in the streets, TERF in the sheets

Yes I have felt much calmer since I dont have misogynistic crap in my face every day, it really doesnt matter who you follow, it will be thrown at you by someone, in the trending, in the replies etc and there it sits no matter how much its reported.

I am still pissed off about that blue tick prick saying about throwing a woman down the stairs and waiting for the bounce. there his tweet sat with impunity no matter how many reported it.
