NMC hearing started today, expected to last four days, of a senior male midwife accused of, among other things, having taken pictures of two women having caesarian sections without their permission and also filmed himself performing a sex act in a hospital toilet.
He faces 29 misconduct charges.

Will be watching this case this week.

@TheApexOfMyLife

Same week as the appalling 'This Is Going To Hurt' too.

Are you referring to the book/film about life as a (junior?) doctor *@RedToothBrush*?

TV series.

The excuse for the appalling behaviour on a thread about it this week was scaryily similar to this:

He told the hearing: 'I'm not a bad man, but a man who's made some very bad choices.

'That person came and went in 2019. He was a product of his circumstances. He was a man who was spiralling out of control in a busy, stressful environment.'

You need to add a few extra letters to that.

Depressingly, the Times are reporting about a male doctor who was allowed to continue working for 3 more years after a police enquiry into allegations - and now there's a major enquiry into child sex abuse involving him. Share token:

I was just coming to post that Goats

Hundreds of files are being reviewed. At leat 109 have been identified as cases of concern. He worked in A&E and in obstetrics and gynaecology in Dudley.

There's a helpline for anyone with concerns.

@Goatsaregreat

I see they changed their initial decision to allow him to appeal Confused The idea that any woman would want this vile individual attending her giving birth is unbelievable.
The continual chances that are offered to unsuitable males to continue with their abusive behaviour towards women is a national scandal.

Not a change - there’s the legal right to appeal. It’s not something the panel can decide upon.

After initially making an order that he be struck off, the Nursing and Midwifery Council accepted a last minute application for this to be changed to an 18-month suspension to give Mr Johnson time to appeal the decision

That's why I commented about the change Motorina. Of course, it may be poor reporting by the journalist

Terrible reporting. Or a reporter who doesn’t understand the process.

They’ve struck him off. That takes effect in 28 days, during which time he can appeal. If he appeals (which could take a year or more) the erasure wouldn’t kick in until after the appeal. So he could be working all that time.

So, after striking him off, they’ve then imposed an 18 month emergency suspension as well. That starts immediately, stopping him working for the 28 days between the hearing ending and the erasure taking effect. If he appeals, it means he will be suspended all that time it takes for the appeal to be heard.

It’s done as a seperate stage after the main decision and the journalist hasn’t understood what’s happened. But it’s not a late change of heart - only the high court (court of sessions if scotland) can change an erasure decision once it’s announced.

Thanks for that excellent explanation @Motorina
Good to know he won't be practicing again any time soon unless his appeal eventually wins out.

I was curious whether Mr Johnson had appealed, can’t find any info on that but here is the hearing report (all 114 pages) www.nmc.org.uk/globalassets/sitedocuments/ftpoutcomes/2022/february-2022/reasons-johnson-ftpcsh-76800-20220211.pdf

At the moment the register still says interim suspension, apparently thats what is put in place initially in case there is an appeal.

The period of time in which he has to put in an appeal is 28 days (although it won't be heard for months).

We're now well after the 28 days, so either the NMC are slow in updating the website - entirely possible! - or he's appealed. In which case the interim suspension will continue until the appeal is heard or he drops it.

When I read the original comment I wondered if it was a male MW I had come across as well.
