Male midwife facing 29 charges of misconduct,

TheLoneRager · 25/01/2022 21:46

NMC hearing started today, expected to last four days, of a senior male midwife accused of, among other things, having taken pictures of two women having caesarian sections without their permission and also filmed himself performing a sex act in a hospital toilet.
He faces 29 misconduct charges.

Will be watching this case this week.

For those midwives on the thread who say that women in your trust are asked if they are ok with a male midwife- is this only when admitted to hospital for birth? I have in my notes that I am only meant to see one midwife I know very well, due to ptsd from trauma from my first birth. My last scheduled appointment I turned up and the only midwife at our small community unit was actually a male and never met him before…no warning or question about options and no chaperone offered.

That article is something else....

"Chelliah thinks he can be a sensitive obstetrician-gynecologist even though he’s a man. But he has no choice but to comply."

"Yet the job can feel cruel. Chelliah recently noticed a sign on a patient room with a picture of a baby’s foot. Above it, “Female providers only.” He kept walking."

It's really quite amazing that people are offended by the idea women want a female doctor.

"It sends a horrible message to men who might have a nascent interest in OB-GYN that’s promptly quashed,” said Dr. Carl Smith, head of the OB-GYN department at the University of Nebraska Medical Center."

Surely, the patient is at the centre of the medical situation, not the doctor, patients aren't there for the benefit of the doctor!

@JulesRimetStillGleaming

Those arguing for same sex doctors seem to assume the NHS is swimming in appointments and doctors and has the capacity to arrange shifts and appointments by sex. I'm afraid you're deluded. Waiting lists are bad enough as it is without the extra headaches that policy would create.
Women have the right to ask for a practitioner of the same sex.

If the NHS cannot provide it, that's a problem with the NHS. However, I am not going to stop asking.

I definitely wasn't asked.

And you think that is acceptable? And that it's acceptable to insult women as being 'deluded'? Funnily enough btw to date I've never had a problem when I've asked for female HCPs and in fact the hospital were great when I specifically asked this when I needed a colposcopy (having had a crap experience with male consultants at a previous colposcopy/LLETZ).

Men should not be allowed to train as midwives, end of. Tbh I'm an ideal world id extend that to anything obstetrics/gynaecology. Or it should at least be ensured that if requested, a woman gets a female HCP if that is her preference. I'd actively incentivise female HCP into areas of medicine where women feel more comfortable with another woman, not a man.

What really pisses me off with male midwives as well is that from the dawn of time, midwifery was the sole area of healthcare that was the domain of women. Midwife= with women- men were actively kept out of the whole process. But as per usual, their typical male entitlement wins over, and they can't even leave one thing to women.

greenmarlin · 28/01/2022 10:14

I don't even think women are "deluded" in this respect. It's well known that the fields of o&g are women-dominated. You'd be deluded to go into the field as a man, today, because so many women will opt for all-female teams as that becomes an option. It's a done deal, really. What trusts should be focussing on when recruiting is maternal outcomes for black women.

As for midwifery, agree with others that it should only be a job open for women. When I was in labour it was the presence of women that was so comforting. It's a long, often intimate process, and it would have felt completely different with a strange man in the room.

Yes the implication that women are being "cruel." It's that same Be Kind message, that same idea that we must accommodate men, even when it's statistically proven to go against our best interests.

What really made my blood boil was the line about "While female students are awed by helping deliver their first baby, men can miss out."

Er, so what? Why should it even matter that male medical students feel like they are "missing out" - what about how the labouring woman feels? Maybe they can go watch it on YouTube and leave the poor labouring woman in peace.

A link for the "not my lovely husband", "why would any man go through all that training just to assault women?" brigade.

5zeds · 28/01/2022 12:12

Surely if there aren’t enough Drs to accommodate what women want then the solution isn’t to provide a sub-par service and try to quash any requests for the ideal service? Surely we recruit more female midwives and Drs for female services?

MananaTomorrow · 28/01/2022 12:55

Or we finally hold men accountable fir their disgusting behaviour. ALWAYS
So it doesn’t happen anymore.

We’ve had the MeToo movement. We need more if a wake up call. The attitude of the Police towards women. The attitude of HCP towards women. Etc etc

Of course we can ask for more women to be trained. But what we need to a change at the level of the society.
Starting with acknowledging the true depth of how awful men’s behaviour is towards women.

I can't understand why you would choose to be a medical specialist in a setting where you don't like your patient group. (Well, I can but I don't like the answer that I come up with) Indeed I found a couple of the male consultants actively hostile.

I had a deeply unpleasant experience with a male consultant in the Obs ward, and when I asked my cousin about him (she was doing her SHO rotation in the ward at the time), she said the problem was that he was known to hate obstetrics, but had to do the work because his specialty was gynaecology.

SirVixofVixHall · 28/01/2022 14:53

@CeilingWax

I worked with a male midwife on postnatal ward, everyone seemed to love him but I found out one night in the early hours he was quite a bully and extremely sharp tongued, I was a first yr student

And isn’t this part of the pattern too. Being a charming hero when there is a crowd to perform to, but being a callous bully when there’s only a lone woman to challenge him.

Fucking perverts

I wonder whether this is the man that I had for my postnatal care. He was very sharp tongued and funny, at the time I was so shocked by what had happened and unwell that I was grateful for any help but later I did wonder why he kept trying to make me laugh (really hurt my stitches each time) rather than just being watchful and giving me some peace. He was observant and in that sense very capable, but he wasn’t very empathetic.

Lillethofeden that thread has been removed as the op is dodgy. But lots of people replied relaying similar experiences.

I would never have a male midwife. Even more of a reason not to have one.

MarshmallowSwede · 03/02/2022 16:42

And frankly I don’t give one damned if a male doctor has his feelings hurt that I prefer a female doctor.

Who cares.. women don’t need to cater to the feelings of men! That’s the problem.. everyone expects women to put the precious feelings of men beofre our own needs for safety and comfort.

Being pregnant is one of that most vulnerable times for a woman. Giving birth a woman is pushing her body to the limits and she needs to feel safe. To hell with the feelings of male doctors who can’t understand why a woman giving birth would want a woman to see to her care.

I agree 100% - I really can't help now but be suspicious of any man- or perhaps not suspicion but actually angry with any man who chooses to specialise in obstetrics/gynaecology- they know how many women are uncomfortable and distressed by their very presence.

Tbh I don't want a male doctor for anything, unless it's for a broken ankle or something like that.

RedToothBrush · 12/02/2022 17:21

Update. Details of the case don't get better.

He has however been struck off pending appeal.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10505539/Male-midwife-struck-nursing-register-performing-sex-acts-work.html
Bullying male midwife who humiliated female juniors, asked one if her husband drank her breast milk, visited sex shop while on duty and took video as he pleasured himself in hospital toilets is thrown out of his profession

Paul Johnson bullied junior colleagues and performed sex acts while at work
He boasted to colleagues about visiting sex shops during work to buy poppers
A three-week hearing at the Nursing and Midwifery Council found him guilty
He has 28 days to appeal a decision to strike him off the nursing register

Same week as the appalling 'This Is Going To Hurt' too.

TheApexOfMyLife · 12/02/2022 18:06

Same week as the appalling 'This Is Going To Hurt' too.

Are you referring to the book/film about life as a (junior?) doctor @RedToothBrush?

Goatsaregreat · 12/02/2022 18:23

I see they changed their initial decision to allow him to appeal Confused The idea that any woman would want this vile individual attending her giving birth is unbelievable.
The continual chances that are offered to unsuitable males to continue with their abusive behaviour towards women is a national scandal.
