Jennifer Swayne has been arrested on charges of vandalism, ‘hate crimes’ and public order offences. Police searched her house and removed several sheets of stickers.

Fair Cop are going at it with gusto. Harry seems to be enjoying this one!

WarriorN · 26/01/2022 12:23

Jenni has found something that looks like a search warrant in her house.

"Search with prior written authority of an inspector" is ticked.

"To secure evidence relating to the offence."

"Any material of a transphobic nature that looks like it can be used in commission of a hate crime."

I've removed the names of the police from the document

WarriorN · 26/01/2022 12:25

Glad it's made the bbc. Shite write up.

Hope for more sunlight and maybe Jenni ending up being interviewed on woman's hour.

ScreamingMeMe · 26/01/2022 12:30

I don't know how much stock we can put in the wording used in the police statement when they have also used the phrase "spraying stickers to lampposts".

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 26/01/2022 12:31

"Any material of a transphobic nature that looks like it can be used in commission of a hate crime."

Do we have a definition of transphobia or "transphobic nature"?

I have a mass of anatomy and physiology texts. Plus copies of reports and publications that describe sex disaggregated data for a range of health and social care interventions.

I also have reference texts about sex differences in lab values and how to interpret them.

I do know that some discussions on social media might be unhappy about these texts. I use these professionally. What do I know about how police officers might consider them? I've no idea what training they had or what they've been told.

Jesus.

Let's hear a definition of transphobia.

Let's see why Heather Brunskill Evans' book meets it.

Let's see why they are hellbent on trying to find material in order to apply a hypothetical crime to it.

They're fucked.

I've got Biology textbooks. Should I hand myself in?

I'm waiting on definitions.

It would very much helpful if we knew more about the training that Police had in making these decisions because it would guide us. We need transparency and accountability for this.

Sophoclesthefox · 26/01/2022 12:48

don't want to derail things

Arf!

But back to much more interesting topics, it is mind boggling that the police response to this has been so serious. I would very much like to know how often people committing vandalism have their houses searched. It’s not a serious crime, and as I understand it, the alleged transphobia can only be aggravating factor to an existing crime, and having material with the words on is not itself a stand alone crime. That amount of focus for what is a minor public order offence is just staggering.

PaleGreenGhost · 26/01/2022 12:50

I think whenever a police force does this kind of thing, the least we should do is club together for a moonpig card congratulating them for having solved all the actual crime in the area.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 26/01/2022 12:51

Particularly in the light of the alleged conversation with today's sticker person who claims the police weren't interested in any offences, supported the stickers, and were basically engaged in a welfare check.

Quite.

Although there may be issues with that persons credibility, aren’t there?

Sophoclesthefox · 26/01/2022 12:53

I may be getting my people muddled, sorry.

SamphiretheStickerist · 26/01/2022 12:57

No, I don't think you are muddled. But the person you are referring to seems to be. Something else for the police to have been more aware of...

SamphiretheStickerist · 26/01/2022 12:58

Ooh! Actually.... That could be me getting them muddled!!!

bishophaha · 26/01/2022 13:05

Didn't we used to have another person on here who was an "expert" on how the police treat activists... jj something? Surprised they're not on here... or maybe they are.
Iirc they were getting v confused about non-crime hate incidents and whether anything needed to be proven for one to be recorded. Which apparently didn't matter because the police always have a big file on everyone anyway.

This made me chuckle - I'm very tempted to send one to Police Scotland.

Ooooh! Now, I could be tempted.... I can travel quite a way from home to post them... so as not to be traced via my credit card.
WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 26/01/2022 13:53

I have a concern (I'm not on Twitter atm) about legal defence and Jennifer's costs - if there is any digging to be done I will get my spade out. If this is the case and a link is acceptable can someone put it up? Or you can PM me, of course I may be a TRA in disguise and I usually advise others against PMing "strangers" but hopefully my posting history and username Wink will reassure anyone. Or MNHQ can confirm I have been here since forever!

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 26/01/2022 13:55

Cross posting, a Moonpig card is an amazing idea Grin Or a physical card, we could seal the envelope with a sticker if we just happened to have any to hand....you know, just on the off chance...

Fair Cop says there will be details about a funding platform in a few days.
Rightsraptor · 26/01/2022 14:05

@WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles - Fair Cop have already said they are providing the barrister, so I'll wait for any crowdfunder announcement to come from them. We could place bets on how quickly the target is achieved. Pretty damn quick, I'd say. The massive police overreach has been noted in many parts.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 26/01/2022 14:28

Thanks guys! I bet there will be lots of contributions which hopefully may be a comfort to you Jennifer, to see how many people support you even if it's under shit circumstances.
