I’m so glad my daughter isn’t in guides anymore.

LSLLM · 19/01/2022 15:09

Girls and young women can do better than this corrupt bullshit of a charity.

KittenKong · 19/01/2022 15:17

I know they said ther that were ‘urgently’ looking into this - should have guessed that they were probably being advised ‘urgently’ by lobby groups.

Imayhaveerred · 19/01/2022 15:44

This is horrifying. I hope Joanna Cherry’s involvement can help the women being threatened by what we must laughingly still call “the law.”

LaChanticleer · 19/01/2022 16:03

This is utterly shocking.

21st century witch hunts, anyone?

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 19/01/2022 16:18

I AM SO ANGRY ABOUT THIS!

GG is the only global organisation run by women, for women. It gave me huge opportunities, life long friendships, confidence, skills, and fun.

I ran Brownies and Guides and had close links with our Scout groups. I left because of the unfolding safeguarding nightmare.

I will never forgive Julie Bentley. Our girls need Guiding.

ArabellaScott · 19/01/2022 16:22

My DD will not ever be joining GG, that's for damn sure!

Slothtoes · 19/01/2022 16:39

I don’t understand at what point GG UK ever asked their volunteers for their explicit endorsement for all that has been going on.
Can GG execs even claim to speak for the volunteers on this?
I’d bet if the volunteers were polled they would all be very pro-safeguarding, given that they are working with children..

KatieAlcock · 19/01/2022 16:48

@EishetChayil

I've seen one of the letters written by one of the women who have been visited by the police, as she's a friend of mine. Absolutely nothing threatening or violent in it. Why would there be? We aren't the violent thugs in this argument.
Please could you DM me about this.

McDuffy · 19/01/2022 16:55

I have two DDs, and they're not joining, either. My DN has just started brownies, will flag to my sister.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/01/2022 17:03

I'm just trying to see if I've got this straight, because it's so hard to believe.

Girl Guides announce the appointment of a new Divisional Commissioner.

Two minutes on the internet suffice for many concerned Guiders, parents of Guides/Brownies/Rainbows and members of the public to find selfies of this new Commissioner posing with automatic weapons and in sexually suggestive poses.

Many of these concerned people email or otherwise contact Girl Guides to say this is a safeguarding concern.

Instead of launching an investigation and putting a hold on the appointment, Girl Guides pass the complainants' details to the police so they can be investigated for hate crime incidents because (bet you didn't see this coming) the DC is a transwoman.

If I have this straight, this is about a clear indication as we've ever seen that there is indeed a sacred caste and nobody can complain about its members, who are considered to be outside all the normal safeguarding procedures. The young girls put at risk by this extraordinarily lax approach seem to be of little account.

I wonder if they're interviewing the Editor of the Daily Mail under caution too. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10235539/Girlguides-launch-probe-trans-Commissioner-58-saucy-dominatrix-style-picture.html

BaronMunchausen · 19/01/2022 17:07

Yes, I know someone this has happened to. She doesn’t want to be on the front page of the Daily Mail - not least because such headlines would deter others from making safeguarding complaints - but obviously wants to stop activists using the police as their attack dogs. Tagging safeguarding concerns as ‘hate’ is a new low.

Miller v College of Policing, and Patel writing to police chiefs and the College, appears to have had zero impact on police on the ground.

Women continue to pay the price of the police's guilty conscience after the murder of Stephen Lawrence.

averylongtimeago · 19/01/2022 17:11

Yup Gaspode that's about it.

I think their social media has been cleaned up now, but it took all of 3 minutes to find pictures of them showing off their boobs, posing with a group of little girls (faces clearly visible) in bondage gear and toting (possibly fake) guns. All of which is strictly forbidden in Girlguiding's media policy.

ArabellaScott · 19/01/2022 17:21

I'm not at all suggesting your friend should do anything she doesn't want to, but as a general point regarding deterring others, I actually think the more sunlight the better on this. It's so very clearly not right, the more people that hear about it the better.

Again, absolutely not making any suggestions regards your friend's (or any other woman's) choices, just that in general publicising injustices like this is better in the long run than allowing them to go unspoken about.

I fully understand all the other reasons for not wanting publicity.

Grumpyosaurus · 19/01/2022 17:21

Fucking hell.

True, the gun wasn't a proper gun but nobody I know who owns an actual gun would pose with any sort of gun on SM like that. You just don't.

And the dominatrix stuff was completely inappropriate for someone getting involved in GG.

I dunno why, if the cops have so much time.on their hands, rural crime, DV, county lines, are all still such massive issues.

KittenKong · 19/01/2022 17:22

That will make a nice update for the daily mail. Funny how the GGs never did seem to do their ‘urgent’ enquiry.

allmywhat · 19/01/2022 17:23

There's a comma missing there, isn't there? PLEASE tell me that there's a comma missing and they weren't in bondage gear posing with little girls (or indeed posing with little girls in bondage gear, but I'm optimistically assuming I can rule the latter out.)

Sorry, it is not like me to be the comma police, but I just needed to make sure of this for my own sanity.

Yes, there is a comma missing. Fat fingers, dodgy glasses and no edit button!

Good catch, @Lovelyricepudding.

I can't decide if I want to drive to Guiding HQ in Edinburgh and scream or just open wine and cry.

This is absolutely terrifying.

It's fine for men people to have fetishes, I DGAF. As soon as your erection comes out your bedroom/wherever you do it and into my life, or crosses the path of my kids, though...woe betide you because forcing me into your fetish or taking your sexual arousal near my kids makes me angry.

Angry women galvanise. We create change. We build systems and charities and safety nets and resources and we don't give up until we have the job done.

There is a growing number of angry women who see GG as a danger to our kids. So, this will all get sorted out because we don't give up.

Meanwhile, I feel like I'm living in the Upside Down.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 19/01/2022 17:39

I want to know the alleged offence. If there has been an interview under caution, there must be a suspected criminal act.

Even if you hold GC views to be offensive (which obviously I don't), it is not an offence to hold offensive views. It is not an offence to express offensive views, in most contexts.

The police interviewing people under caution for views expressed in a private email is extremely concerning, with implications way beyond the trans debate.

Bosky · 19/01/2022 17:40

Girl Guiding has a strict Volunteer Code of Conduct to ensure that all volunteers and employees are good role models for girls.

Perhaps there is a get-out clause for those who qualify for "Female only" positions by "identifying as female"?

@KatieAlcock - this must be upsetting/exasperating for you.

I'm sorry that Guiding brought so much shit to your life. It wasn't supposed to be like this, was it?

Bosky · 19/01/2022 17:42

All those Girl Guiding roles "Available to Females Only", ie. to anyone who "identifies as female".
