I just think the whole violence thing is a bit of a red herring. It’s a reason, but not the reason, for single-sex services. Focusing on it alone gives creeps like Harwood a chance to say NAMALT.
I know that. When I go to a GP and ask to speak about my medical issues with a female doctor, it’s not because I’m afraid of the male doctor.
When I go to a swimming pool and want to remove my clothes without being seen by males, it’s not because I’m afraid of being raped.
The separation of males from females has broader and deeper cultural roots than just the fear of violence. You can’t treat females and our bodies in the way Western culture has for about a thousand years and then express dismay and confusion at the idea that we want to have some separation from males during our intimate moments.
Women are objectified, mocked for whether or not they meet arbitrary beauty standards, condescended to by males about their health needs, and pushed out of positions of power by the requirement for their reproductive labour. If they show their bodies publicly, they are told to cover up.
So how on God’s green earth are we meant to spin on the head of a pin and suddenly not mind integrated female-male services?
Not happening.
