Woke Harry Potter?

Film producers are planning a woke version of the Harry Potter movies in which the magical characters will be played by transgender and non-binary actors.

www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-10406459/US-movie-producers-plan-new-woke-Harry-Potter-film.html

The article notes that JKR may sue, personally I think this would be a mistake, imagine gender ideology write large in living color and beamed into everyone’s living room. I wonder how that would be received by an unsuspecting public?

I'd suspect someone had tampered with the water supply and fused us all with hallucinogens. Surely there aren't that many trans and non-binary actors out there?? Although technically we are all under the trans and NB umbrella according to bonewall.

foxgoosefinch · 15/01/2022 23:09

God it sounds awful! I don’t think she has any need to worry - these reboots are inevitably dreadful, and the last recourse of an industry with no creative inspiration left. I can’t imagine anyone wanting to watch it!

EeeICouldRipATissue · 15/01/2022 23:15

Funnily enough just been reading that article on the Daily Mail website!
Did at first think Hmm but on thinking further, does it specify anywhere in the books Harry's skin colour for example?
I'm a big fan of the books, but admittedly I haven't read for years so can't remember!
If not, why can't his family members be black?
Also why can't characters be gay, or trans?
It's only a re imagining of a story.
It's like fan fiction, plenty of that around and there's nothing wrong with that?
Not sure how you could sue when it was their own writing.

EeeICouldRipATissue · 15/01/2022 23:17

Re-imagining as writing your own story with others characters.
Like fan fiction does

Haudyourwheesht · 15/01/2022 23:19

It sounds a bit weird. But basically making up another story about witches and wizards to be cast with trans actors isn't really a massive deal. It's not Harry Potter surely, without JKR's say so.

MrsMadderRose · 15/01/2022 23:20

Why don’t they create their own amazing bestselling new story about trans characters? Why base it on HP? Cheeky gits.

SleepingDoglets · 15/01/2022 23:20

I imagine it’ll be hilariously bad.

I love the books.
The films were ok, but carried by the excellent adult cast and the megabucks special effects.

SleepingDoglets · 15/01/2022 23:22

Because hijacking existing things is the way the woke cult do things.
TurquoiseBaubles · 15/01/2022 23:22

How can someone be a ‘gender-nonconforming, non-binary, trans female’? Is that a male person who has transed to be female, but presents as non-binary? Or a male person who is non-binary, but presents as female? Or a female person who is trans and presents as female (or non-binary).

Or a person of either sex who is gender-nonconforming (in which case we can all apply for the part).

It's a tad confusing and will never happen

Triphazards · 15/01/2022 23:22

It'll be shit.

Get woke, go broke.

OneEpisode · 15/01/2022 23:23

This is a young TikTok creator. Warner brothers probably not that concerned. JKR has let fans riff on her work (eg Harry was in a different Hogwarts House, how that would make the story different).

Iwishihadariver · 15/01/2022 23:24

Sounds like someone is taking the puss. Find something better to do.

MrsMadderRose · 15/01/2022 23:26

Jkr could simply ask for a share of the proceeds appropriate to her creative contribution. Then anyone who consumes it will be paying jkr.

ditalini · 15/01/2022 23:27

They could alway stuff the next Fantastic Beasts film with trans and non binary talent and a script passed by a panel of gender ideology sensitivity readers.

Oh wait, Warner Bros want to make money.

Tsuni · 15/01/2022 23:30

How can Harry’s mum be a trans woman?

Triphazards · 15/01/2022 23:35

@Tsuni

How can Harry’s mum be a trans woman?
There you go with the 5th grade biology!

We now know that men in stiletto heels have far more babies than actual mothers ever did.

Hoardasurass · 15/01/2022 23:43

🤣 it'll never happen

Waitwhat23 · 15/01/2022 23:47

JKR seems to have allowed fan fic writers a certain amount of latitude in the past (many writers don't - Anne Rice being a notable example) as long as it was done with genuine intentions and not for profit. I don't think this counts as either of those things. From what I can understand, use of characters for the purpose of satire or irony is allowed but this doesn't sound like that would apply either.

It sounds like very unoriginal people want to cash in on a woman they claim to despise.

Waitwhat23 · 15/01/2022 23:51

I doubt the veracity of this article in any case as it just sounds far too stupid to be true. But then...

Goatsaregreat · 15/01/2022 23:58

This makes me laugh. It's a bit like our own creepy monitors. Obsessively focusing on something / somewhere they apparently despise and spending half their lives on here / Harry Potter.
Grin

DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 16/01/2022 00:04

According to casting notes, that role is only open to an actor who is ‘Asian, black, African descent, ethnically ambiguous, multiracial, Indigenous peoples, Latino, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, South Asian, Indian, Southeast Asian or Pacific Islander’. Producers have not specified who they want to play Lily Evans, Harry’s mother, but have said they want a ‘gender-nonconforming, non-binary, trans female’

What's the saying? Something about pop eating itself?

DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 16/01/2022 00:05

It seems like a pisstake

IvyTwines · 16/01/2022 00:15

Oh wait, Warner Bros want to make money.

One of the lead actors, Ezra Miller, is a 'they/them' and has been for a while.
WandaWomblesaurus73 · 16/01/2022 00:20

Ethically Ambiguous they mean.

It's a shitty fan fic.

BootsAndRoots · 16/01/2022 00:23

I'm still waiting for someone to tell me the transphobic thing JKR said. I don't know how many different message boards I've been banned on when I've asked accusers of what she actually said.
