Woke Harry Potter?

Film producers are planning a woke version of the Harry Potter movies in which the magical characters will be played by transgender and non-binary actors.

www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-10406459/US-movie-producers-plan-new-woke-Harry-Potter-film.html

The article notes that JKR may sue, personally I think this would be a mistake, imagine gender ideology write large in living color and beamed into everyone’s living room. I wonder how that would be received by an unsuspecting public?

I don’t think this will happen and I strongly suspect the DM was being disingenuous and presenting it as a more serious thing than it really is.
It’s one thing to write fanfic that doesn’t have any production costs, another to film something. You would need to monetise it and then JKR’s famous tolerance of fanfic would reach its limit.

BootsAndRoots · 16/01/2022 14:01

Anyone remember the French and Saunders sketch? "You're a woman Harry!"

Ozanj · 16/01/2022 14:02

It will be Warner and HBO that sues.

crazyjinglist · 16/01/2022 14:39

FFS Hmm

SpudleyLass · 16/01/2022 16:39

She owns the character rights still, so they cannot legally do this without her say so.

ClaudineClare · 16/01/2022 17:17

@SpudleyLass

She owns the character rights still, so they cannot legally do this without her say so.
Perhaps they are hoping she will sue them. They can then claim victim status, being bullied by evil JKR.
JellySaurus · 16/01/2022 21:25

Dumbledore, Snape, Shacklebolt and Voldemort all wear long, non-bifurcated garments in the films, as do Harry, Ron and most of the other students when they're dressed in best for the ball. Then you've got the animagi and metamorphagi characters, who identify as something other than what they were assigned at birth and expect to be treated as that something else when they present that way, especially as they pass so well.

So the original films already represent trans, non-binary and GNC themes.

WandaWomblesaurus73 · 17/01/2022 02:42

"You're a WOMAN Harry!"

French and Saunders already did it.

TheMoreThisReachesTheMainstrea · 17/01/2022 08:40

I wonder if this alleged production is an acknowledgment that JKR really is uncancellable. The death threats are background noise, the book burnings only hurt the person that bought them, so plan B is that HP is somehow a thing totally separate from its creator and it’s fans can continue to live in Potter World without worrying about She Who Must Not Be Named

Obviously they can't do this because, as PPs have pointed out, it would breach copyright.

But there's something very sad and funny about it. A lot of these young people are completely obsessed with Harry Potter. I don't think there was anything equivalent in previous generations - true, there were books and tv series people liked, but nothing that grabbed a whole generation's imagination in the same way as HP has grabbed the imagination of this generation. And now they find that JKR is guilty of wrongthink, they still can't bear to let their obsession go.

This. Either the film gets made and they all start crowing about how they whooped JKRs ass while screaming 'trans rights!' or they play the victim, and say being stopped from making the film proves JKR is a massive transphobe - when in reality all that happened was that a woman was very smart, held onto her copyright and stopped a bunch of whiny toddlers shitting over her creation.

prudencepuffin · 17/01/2022 09:27

I`m waiting for the new version of Pride and Predjudice in which all the Bennett sisters are transwomen who want to marry rich lesbians.

If its serious, which is hard to believe, I agree with previous poster suggesting that JKR gets a cut for every performance so they end up funding her! No doubt she would give it all to charities supporting women and children - double win.

OvaHere · 17/01/2022 09:30

With hindsight it was a mistake on JKR's part to be so lenient with fanfic. It seems to have mostly resulted in a magical children's series being turned into a massive amount of weird porn. She probably couldn't have known that at the time though and eventually everything on the internet seems to lead to porn.

I kind of hope they do make this film because I imagine it will be hilariously shite. Sharknado level bad whilst trying to take itself very seriously.

allmywhat · 17/01/2022 16:13

There was a fan-made Harry Potter: the Musical years ago that was put on in front of a live audience and streamed to millions on YouTube (they didn’t charge for live tickets but presumably they made a profit off YouTube?)

I’m not sure how they did it legally, maybe just crossed their fingers and hoped not to be sued, but I guess there is a sort of precedent for this… thing described in the article.

There's something really terrifying about a whole generation turning into Kathy Bates in Misery..
NitroNine · 17/01/2022 17:28

@OvaHere
So grim. So very grim. It caused The Ultimate Mary-Sue; painful PAINFUL Americanised versions of Hogwarts; & really disturbing not “just” porn but pairings that = child abuse. I sometimes read Potter FanFic in desperation when waiting for a new book; & even with the ratings avoiding the seemingly-endless stream of pure filth could be difficult. Bleurgh. Send in the dragons, burn it all down. Especially because The Leaky Cauldron have been utter arses about JKR.

@allmywhat according to Wikipedia (so yes, may not be accurate, BUT it’s basically the explanation I recall…) “A Very Potter Musical” can exist as:

Due to the nature of the musical, Team Starkid is allowed by Warner Brothers to host the musical on their channel and owns the rights to the songs and script, but as they do not own the rights to the Harry Potter characters they cannot make money off of the production, nor can they give the rights for the show to any other production company: the University of Michigan version is the only "official" production. This has not stopped unauthorized productions from being performed elsewhere, also done non-profit.

AVPM was also edited to make it more family-friendly - if WB weren’t happy with the content of it they would have had the AVPM team either make changes or remove the entire thing, destroy all footage etc etc.

WB do not want anyone damaging their brand in any way. And that would - despite the stance they’re taking ATM - include this effort. Nobody gets to remake or recast HP but them/a team approved by them; distractions from their Wizarding World narrative are unacceptable; they don’t want souvenirs & clothing produced under the WB Wizarding World brand (eg replica wands, copies of costumes, confectionary items) to be used…

Nothing at all, they are that genre of enjoyably bad which I think this could be. Grin

How can Harry’s mum be a trans woman?
I guess anything is possible with the use of magic!

Omg, I’ve never made the connection before but now you mention it they have exactly that vibe. We own you and if you say things we don’t like you’d better watch out…

Do you know? The more I think about it the more I would welcome it. It would have to have a terrible script and awful actors. Grin

I vote Nicholas Cage for Snape, Madonna as McGonagle. David Hasslehoff as Dumbledore, Each of the Baldwin brothers could play the Defence against the Dark Arts teachers, Steven Segal could be Voldermort and obviously Charlie Sheen as Sirius Black.
We need a crowdfund. 🥕
