Woke Harry Potter?

Film producers are planning a woke version of the Harry Potter movies in which the magical characters will be played by transgender and non-binary actors.

www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-10406459/US-movie-producers-plan-new-woke-Harry-Potter-film.html

The article notes that JKR may sue, personally I think this would be a mistake, imagine gender ideology write large in living color and beamed into everyone’s living room. I wonder how that would be received by an unsuspecting public?

I'm sure it will be a box office sell out with all of those famous people in it.

MargaritaPie · 16/01/2022 01:54

Is this in protest of Rowling's views?

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 16/01/2022 02:27

I feel my inner Nan bubbling up

Woke Harry Potter?
MrBIobby · 16/01/2022 02:38

@Tsuni

How can Harry’s mum be a trans woman?
Magic. 😉
MrBIobby · 16/01/2022 02:39

@Goatsaregreat

This makes me laugh. It's a bit like our own creepy monitors. Obsessively focusing on something / somewhere they apparently despise and spending half their lives on here / Harry Potter. Grin
Grin They are obsessed.
OperationDessertStorm · 16/01/2022 03:20

In a magical world where you can literally transform into the form of any person, animal or object, fly on broomsticks, breathe underwater, conjure up any food, make yourself invisible, I’m pretty sure I remember someone coming back from the dead - and yet the best they can come up with is making a character non-binary?

Considering they’re so interested in jkrs work, it’s such a shame none of them seem
To have actually read it.

Booklover3 · 16/01/2022 03:25

It’s a children’s fantasy series… how appropriate is that exactly?

Datun · 16/01/2022 04:15

I'm kind of fascinated to see how they portray 'gender non-conforming'. It will certainly show what they regard as gender conforming. And how will they differentiate between a gender non conforming man and a transwoman? Cos it cant just be about clothes, can it?

EeeICouldRipATissue · 16/01/2022 04:20

Not sure what you mean?
Why can someone not do their own version?
Why would it not be appropriate to introduce LGBT characters?

Feelingoood · 16/01/2022 04:36

Because it all gets in the way of a rollicking good story.

MiladyBerserko · 16/01/2022 05:57

Oh that will be so much fun! I really really hope tbis happens .

ThePrionOne · 16/01/2022 06:05

So brave Lilly Potter will be male, but treacherous, ratty Peter Pettigrew will be female.

Sounds like a barrel of laughs!

JustWaking · 16/01/2022 07:05

So brave Lilly Potter will be male, but treacherous, ratty Peter Pettigrew will be female.

Yes, I noticed that Peter Pettigrew the traitor has to be 'a gender non-conforming, non-binary, trans male’ (ie a woman) too. Ever since Adam and Eve, women have been vilified as the bad 'uns. Plus ça change

Ploppy1322 · 16/01/2022 07:34

@EeeICouldRipATissue

Funnily enough just been reading that article on the Daily Mail website! Did at first think Hmm but on thinking further, does it specify anywhere in the books Harry's skin colour for example? I'm a big fan of the books, but admittedly I haven't read for years so can't remember! If not, why can't his family members be black? Also why can't characters be gay, or trans? It's only a re imagining of a story. It's like fan fiction, plenty of that around and there's nothing wrong with that? Not sure how you could sue when it was their own writing.
They've rewritten the story and used someone else's work without permission and in a way they know she will have issues with, it's bullying. That's the real issue, not necessarily that they want to use more diverse characters.
Aroundtheworldin80moves · 16/01/2022 07:45

Sounds very prescriptive, saying that all characters have to be played by certain genders and ethnicities. Why not let anyone audition for what character they want to?

Haudyourwheesht · 16/01/2022 07:57

But how did Lily give birth to Harry? How? How? Or will he be adopted by said trans woman? yet again erasing the role of women from life.

aweegc · 16/01/2022 08:06

I find it rather funny that even this lot accept that the only way a trans woman can actually be a mother is by magic.

Anyway, isn't "mother" transphobic? The non-binaries - what are also trans apparently - find that sort of language very triggering. It's supposed to be parent. Or birthing parent.

I am not a HP fan so I haven't read all the books or watched all the films (one or two I have though). Is gender and sexuality an issue in the books/film? Is it relevant to the storyline or sub plots? Cos in the parts I've seen and read, it was kids having adventures and fighting magic baddies with magic.

Harry did have a magic blanket that could make him invisible..so maybe he was trans visible? Doesn't that make JKR waaaaay ahead of the curve 😉

aweegc · 16/01/2022 08:07

*films

By the way, are the police also monitoring this thread? It would be handy if they could just give a little rainbow wave to let us know when we're being state monitored.

aweegc · 16/01/2022 08:09

*non-binaries - WHO

FFS predictive text is an arse this morning!

Igmum · 16/01/2022 08:18

No reputable film company would do this because they don't have copyright (also because it's a shit idea and they will lose millions). Could well be a crazy Tik Tocker doing it off their own bat but again they don't have permission so TV, streaming companies and cinema chains won't touch them. Might appear as a few Tik Tok snippets (not sure where copyright clicks in, suspect after not very long). Frankly it sounds dire and the main impact is likely to be that it costs this person a lot of money, time and effort

Waitwhat23 · 16/01/2022 08:31

@MargaritaPie

Is this in protest of Rowling's views?
They're protesting these kind of views?

'I believe the majority of trans-identified people not only pose zero threat to others, but are vulnerable for all the reasons I’ve outlined. Trans people need and deserve protection. Like women, they’re most likely to be killed by sexual partners. Trans women who work in the sex industry, particularly trans women of colour, are at particular risk. Like every other domestic abuse and sexual assault survivor I know, I feel nothing but empathy and solidarity with trans women who’ve been abused by men.'

Seems a bit, well, transphobic of them.

ClaudineClare · 16/01/2022 08:44

Not sure how you could sue when it was their own writing

Using characters created by JKR infringes her copyright.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 16/01/2022 08:56

It would be hilarious if this happened - Somwhow I don’t think it will though. I mean it may do as a self produced tik tok but somehow I doubt they’ll raise the $125 million budget it took just to make the philosophers stone

TheWeeDonkey · 16/01/2022 09:02

Everything these days is remakes and sequels and franchises. So boring. I haven't been to the cinema for years cos its always the same thing. Does anyone make new films anymore?

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 16/01/2022 09:02

it's a bit of nothing.

the people behind it can't monetise it by selling it to cinemas or streaming platforms as they won't touch it with a barge pole due to the copyright issue

Youtube won't want it for the same reason

the minute they try to crowdfund for this I expect JKR will rightly sue their arses

I'm an old gimmer and I expect there are plenty of video hosting platforms out there I don't know about where they could show it, except if I don't know about it, chances are most other people don't either, so where's your audience

IF it does happen it'll be shit and no-one will see it

but I'd bet on it never getting off the ground.
