Am I bigoted to want the Best Actress award to go to an adult human female?

I think there's already been a thread deleted on this, but no, you're not unreasonable.

Ghostsintheshelf · 10/01/2022 13:49

Or bigoted

SwissBall · 10/01/2022 13:51

Oh I haven’t been on the threads this morning. Ridiculous. This probably won’t last then.

Happy for this performer to win an award. They are very compelling in the role and hold the cast together at various points. It's a great performance.
But not Best Female.
Third open category if you like but not Best Female. That is for Adult Human Females.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 10/01/2022 14:55

Colour me utterly shocked. I expect that in award ceremonies where sex based categories are abolished to be “gender neutral” men will win list of the things and in award ceremonies where TW are included in the rumens category, TW will win most of the things. Either way men win all the things

I won't hold my breath for the time a transman wins Best Actor Award

Appalled at this award. Enough is enough.

TInkyWlnky · 10/01/2022 16:54

The truth is worthy of deletion I see. Must not speak the truth.

bellinisurge · 10/01/2022 17:44

Surely it's only a matter of time before Elliott Page wins an award for The Umbrella Academy in the Best Male category. I mean, it's a good series. Elliott is good in it. That's enough surely.

KingofQueens · 10/01/2022 18:27

Pose is an exceptional series, and MJ Rogriguez is an exceptional actress in it.
Actress is a gendered not sexed category. MJ is absolutely an actress.
The "actress" category is definitely not as a pp suggests for "adult human females". That's a disingenuous claim, taking a phrase and transposing it to a different context does not make it so.
Remember Anna Paquin? Best supporting Actress in 1994 -definitely wasn't an "adult human female" she was a child.

Iwishihadariver · 10/01/2022 18:30

Man wins thing. It'll never happen.

Agreed, but I do recall with pleasure when Linda Hunt won a Best Supporting Actress award for her role (portraying a natal man) in The Year of Living Dangerously.

She was amazing. She was acting. And at the time, she was virtually unknown, so hadn’t been cast because she could bring in the box office receipts.

Her sex wasn’t central to the plot— she was female, the character was male, not a transman—she just acted her arse off and was exceptionally moving and memorable as an Indonesian male dwarf (none of which she is, iirc).

Actresses come in all ages.

Though the trend now is for female performers to call themselves the generic term ‘actor’, that’s never been about excluding a person’s sex. It’s been a feminist movement, in the same way feminists moved to eliminate doctoress.

Frankly, I’m still working through my thoughts on this change of wording in both examples given.

SwissBall · 10/01/2022 18:56

Yes you’re completely right. Anna Paquin winning as a child is just like a transwoman winning Hmm

IvyTwines · 10/01/2022 19:32

@ShagMeRiggins as having a medical examination is one of the times when the sex of the person doing it can make a difference both in outcomes and the feeling of security and relaxation of the patient, I'd personally prefer it if we did still use sex-based words like 'doctress' in some circumstances.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 10/01/2022 19:38

The very long stretch to state that actress is a gendered term, not based on the sex of the individual, is ludicrous.

We ALL know it is a sex based term.

That it has to be suborned, twisted, redefined to make it support The Ideology is equally ludicrous.

And yet the semantic destruction, razing of the lexicon continues.

And somehow we are supposed not to see it!

Codswallop!

Man in dress steals award reserved for women.

Why haven't they handed it back? No shame.

Linguini · 10/01/2022 19:43

What's the difference between and actress and an actor?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 10/01/2022 19:46

ESSO

ErrolTheDragon · 10/01/2022 19:47

Actress is a gendered not sexed category.
Is it? Wtf are we doing with 'gendered' categories in this day and age? Isn't that terribly exclusionary of NB people? OTOH, one category for each of the two sexes is completely inclusive, and helps redress the old fashioned sexism still rife in the entertainments industry (like so many others).

TInkyWlnky · 10/01/2022 19:51

Actress is a gendered not sexed category.

What does a gendered category mean?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 10/01/2022 19:52

What does a gendered category mean?

That the person who uttered those words is a twonk?

Is that bannable?

IvyTwines · 10/01/2022 19:52

Maybe they should just junk the whole thing and start to bring in awards categories by age group, going up in decades or 20 year chunks: it would be a good way to highlight ageism and give a career boost to remerging actors.
