Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

If a general election was called, who would you vote for?

Or really, who can I vote for? I don’t want to vote Tory, especially after today’s revelations. I also don’t feel happy voting Labour or Green, for reasons often discussed on this board. Is there a party you’d feel happy to vote to be in power if you had a chance to, say, tomorrow? Feeling pretty despondent

@FindingMeno
Yep, that just about sums up my stance too.

It really worries me how many people would vote based on a single issue. People may not agree with 'gender woo' but would you really place your opinion about other people gender orientation over how much investment our mental health / social care / nhs services receive? Really?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/12/2021 10:06

Whether I do or not is up to me, not you. My vote.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/12/2021 10:12

I absolutely will make the principle of biological reality my priority when I vote.

I would not be able to vote for any party that denies my existence and refuses to listen to my voice.

This is not a ‘single issue’. This is fundamental.

Needmoresleep · 08/12/2021 10:14

To add, my vote is a vote that women fought and died for.

I owe it to them to not allow it to be taken away.

Zerogravity · 08/12/2021 10:19

But it affects everything. It is not niche. I believe that eliminating sex in law and prioritizing gender would be disastrous.

Leafstamp · 08/12/2021 10:22

@WomenR

From now on I will be voting by candidate rather than party. The first qualifying question is easy: What is a woman?
I think this is the best way forward for many of us on this board.
DaisiesandButtercups · 08/12/2021 10:25

I abstained for the first time in my life in the last elections, the local and PCC ones.

If a party doesn’t have a grasp on reality, doesn’t care about freedom of speech and thought, about the collection and analysis of accurate data, before we even get to child safeguarding, safeguarding of vulnerable adults and the distinct needs of women, then really I am not going to trust them to sort out public services or anything else.

I also live in a safe seat so in the FPTP general elections my vote counts for nothing. In local elections Liberal Democrats or Conservatives could get in but I can’t in conscience vote for either.

I would vote for any candidate openly standing for reality, accurate data, safeguarding and a sex based understanding of what a woman or a man is, and our rights to state our understanding that sex is binary, cannot be changed and that it matters and openly defending our rights not to be forced to participate in the beliefs of others to the contrary.

This is exactly it. It's not the same as me just deciding that one issue is more important than the rest. It's about how these parties actually work, from the grassroots to the top. I now see the Labour Party as vulnerable to totalitarianism. Not just vulnerable to - I see totalitarianism and intolerance and a lack of critical thought in the Labour Party almost every time I look at it. That is absolutely fundamental, regardless of the issue. If they were OK on gender but had all decided that the earth was flat and that "round-earthers" were evil bigots who must be expelled, that would be equally troubling.

TheABC · 08/12/2021 10:34

I am torn. I live in a Conservative seat that was previously Lib Dem, so could be up for grabs at the next election.

Do I vote for the party that actively campaigned for male rapists in female prisons or do I go for the party that has corruption down to an art form?

Oh, decisions, decisions....

Needmoresleep · 08/12/2021 10:36

I would vote for Rosie Duffield MP without a moment's hesitation if I were in her constituency. I see her as having both principles and common sense. Not surprising that she has managed to retain what had been considered a safe Tory seat.

Why don't the LibDems and Labour see it? I really don't get it. And precisely why I can't vote for either.

ArabellaScott · 08/12/2021 10:37

@JustSpeculation

In very blunt terms, the Tories are greedy, corrupt and incompetent. But Labour are cowards and bullies, and that's worse. Navel gazing delusionals to boot. If there were more Rosie Duffields I could vote Labour.

But there aren't.

And the fringe parties are fringier than they've been for decades.

So, Tory, if there was a general election tomorrow. Locally, I could still vote Lib dem.

Exactly the correct description for both main parties.

I am hoping that Mumsnet is going to stand: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/a4420760-58-yo-woman-plots-to-overthrow-the-government?msgid=113133317#113133317

Or host a non-violent overthrow, at least.

Well that’s why I can’t vote Conservative.

But the gender stuff is not ‘single issue’- it negatively affects women in prison, sports, rape crisis centres, it puts insecure teenagers on an often very unnecessary and potentially dangerous medical pathway, it tells lesbians that they ought to sleep with trans women to be inclusive, it tells children that they are just sets of sexist stereotypes on a Barbie-Ken spectrum, it tells us all that men’s feelings are more important than women’s safety and privacy and it is authoritarian and often downright nasty. When politicians unquestionably support this stuff I assume that they are (a) wilfully ignorant or (b) easily led or (c) misogynists and homophobes. None of which are character traits that I admire in public figures.

I would most likely vote tory, hate Boris completely but I have a decent local mp who works hard for his constituents and when I remember our joke of a Labour one previously I'd rather stick to the one we have. Besides I do think women's rights are fundamental and losing those would do far more damage long term than another term of tory rule could.

ArabellaScott · 08/12/2021 10:41

@SirChenjins

Whichever party is most likely to adversely impact the SNP’s vote share.
Same.

What the hell has happened to political discourse

It died the day Boris Johnson was elected as our PM.

MalagaNights · 08/12/2021 11:06

Tory.

After years of campaigning and voting labour.

They are still just about clinging to reality.
Not everything is:
Racist
Misogynistic
Transphobic

And thinking it is doesn't solve anything.

And labour would love more covid restrictions, to keep us all 'safe'.

I don't want any political party directing my speech, removing my freedom to keep me safe, or denying biological reality to be kind.

The Tories are a mess but at least they've not gone entirely batshit crazy.

Can you stop with the dehumanising, threatening bullshit, now, please?

ArtemesiaK · 08/12/2021 11:09

Safe Conservative seat here, with a popular MP, so my vote wouldn't make any difference. But I won't vote for Labour until the leader begins to support the female sex, cervix's and all....
Hopefully all the parties will elect a leader with a brain before the next election, so that we get a choice....
