Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

If a general election was called, who would you vote for?

Anothernamechange3 · 07/12/2021 22:42

Or really, who can I vote for? I don’t want to vote Tory, especially after today’s revelations. I also don’t feel happy voting Labour or Green, for reasons often discussed on this board. Is there a party you’d feel happy to vote to be in power if you had a chance to, say, tomorrow? Feeling pretty despondent

OP posts:
FlyingOink · 14/12/2021 01:08

Cheese I'm not replying to you any more, on this or any other thread, as you aren't posting in good faith and I don't need the stress. Good night.

CheeseMmmm · 14/12/2021 01:43

Fair enough, obviously.

I see you on another board a lot and have done for ages, for me a shame to hear that.

I have been here for yonks and have always posted honestly. On this, with NI, I was (am) worried. I really hope my concerns are not warranted. And that's all.

I'm sorry I've pissed you off, didn't mean to but obviously totally did.

Thanks for letting me know.

HeartGoesLast · 15/12/2021 19:12

Tory. If any party that redefines ‘woman’ gets in, we’re fucked. That’s the bottom line.

Tabasco007 · 15/12/2021 22:18

@Blessex

Voted Labour all my life. Next time Tory. No question. Whatever I think on other issues, sex and gender is just too important at this moment.
That's very much how I feel, even though it pains me to even contemplate voting Tory....
TreborBore · 16/12/2021 07:26

Sex and gender is important but aren’t a livable environment in the face of climate change and avoiding the worst excesses of fascism equally important? That one issue alone wouldn’t make me vote for the incompetent tories.

Ceramide · 16/12/2021 09:54

avoiding the worst excesses of fascism

The Tories aren't in everyone's good books, but they are still far from the above extreme.

Beckert · 16/12/2021 11:40

Sex and gender is important but aren’t a livable environment in the face of climate change and avoiding the worst excesses of fascism equally important?

No. Not when half the populations rights are being removed. It's hardly a single issue. It changes everything. And the Tory's can hardly be described as the worst excesses of fascism for goodness sake.

Fifteentoes · 16/12/2021 23:14

There is literally no issue more important than climate change (and that includes my one about democracy vs fascism). There can't be, because all questions about how society works become meaningless if the planet is rendered incapable of habitation by a society in the first place.

How people don't get this (not here specifically, but when considering all aspects of politics) is beyond me.

whattodo2019 · 16/12/2021 23:23

Tory

Beckert · 16/12/2021 23:53

I do get why you feel like this. But I don't fall into the category of we're all doomed. Sort out women's rights then we'll talk about climate change.

CheeseMmmm · 17/12/2021 01:13

@TreborBore

I couldn't vote conservative either.

Imo makes no odds they have lot of support and no real opposition.

What is going on is hardly trivial.
Climate change?
Women globally are impacted way more than men when it comes to climate change.

The current direction is that women does not mean female. The word female is going .

So. Who is impacted most by climate change? Erm .

Example because of your point. I can't see this push catching on globally at all. Obviously.

Being it home though.

Who most likely to live in poverty?
Who is committing what crime against who?
Swimming club changing communal ages there maybe 5- 60. Change where you feel comfy.
Women's rights? Gynocentric. Can't use women. People who might need abortions. Smears? Anyone with a cervix. Not linked obv, different groups.

USA scholarships uni sport. Long been way to get to uni for those otherwise no chance higher education.

Women and girls are half the world. 30 million ish in UK.

We're not trivial.

And climate change is interesting choice.

What should we do?
Nappies in Dettol. Buy less plastic. Don't drive for school run (you wasteful lazy bastard). Etc.

While very rich men blast penis shaped buses to edge of atmosphere (which up there is massively hugely damaging) in the billionaire version of mike's bigger than yours. And .. etc.

No thank you.

CheeseMmmm · 17/12/2021 01:22

And you think who. Labour?

Would somehow save the climate?

USA (bonkers emissions and per person), China, India (both low pp but massive populations), ...

Labour (who have seemingly been focusing on making themselves unelectable) will make a big impact on this... Really?!

CheeseMmmm · 17/12/2021 02:02

Why are women who are interested in women's/ girls rights, their situations all over the world .

ALWAYS been told to prioritise something else?

Does this happen to other rights groups?

And for women it's about EVERYTHING. all the time.

Lefty thing is that feminism means fighting for equality for EVERYONE.
Talk about UK and it's stop that what about Afghanistan?
Talk about Afghanistan and it's what about refugee situation around the world?
Talk about cervical cancer and it's what about men's cancers?
Talk about sexual violence global and it's what about conscription?
And on and on.

Do men on chat sites talking about say knife crime teen boys dying do have posters jumping in and saying what about climate change?

I have no idea.
I doubt it.
And I have no idea but from what I've seen I doubt many threads at all like that are created/ posted on much.

Wherever you look. From a global point of view.

Who is in charge?

Who has the power?

Who owns the wealth?

Who controls the the resources?

Who makes cock shaped rockets and fires them way into the sky. Which have no benefit except for saying ner ner mines better than yours, and selling tickets to not quite so rich people to feel weightless for a few mins? (Yes I'd go but that's beside the point!).

Who fires the missiles, launches the bombs, deploys helicopters, sends aircraft carriers with jumpjets, drops the bombs?
Causing massive destruction and we all know who is disproportionately impacted? In so many ways? Hmm. Women and children! And it's hardly mentioned, not as important as the coverage of soldiers, ships, guns.

I won't go on but I could!

CheeseMmmm · 17/12/2021 02:05

Meanwhile. In my office who at lunchtime pulled out a bag to put purchases in, and who every day got new bags from shops?

Who put rubbish in the right bin and who just shoved it in the nearest one?

...

A handful of women on MN can influence climate change by voting for an unelectable party in England, who don't even know what we are?

No thank you.

CheeseMmmm · 17/12/2021 02:07

Sorry

Tldr.

Climate change? Go and tell it to men.

And stop telling us that there's (always) something more important we should sort out before we think about our half of the population.

BasiliskStare · 17/12/2021 02:34

I don't like tribal politics

I also think a spoiled ballot - you might as well save your shoe leather , bus fare , petrol money - you have not voted and will live with whatever those who did have voted for . But armchair generals are legion.

My view is ( & am not talking about a particular party ) - pick the least worst if that is all you can do & go with it. Gordon Bennett - I think the least we can all do is vote to make something heard.

CheeseMmmm · 17/12/2021 05:23

Not heard that term before! So looked it up.

'Armchair general" is a derogatory term for a person who regards themselves as an expert on military matters, despite having little to no actual experience in the military. Alternatively, it can mean a military commander who does not participate in actual combat.'

CheeseMmmm · 17/12/2021 05:51

I assume this is an analogy but I am obviously missing something.

It's probably obvious but can you explain?

On the whole, guessing at analogy. Only thing I can think of. Is that you feel reading the thread, that's it's predominantly posters telling others what to do? When they don't know anything about the situation at hand?

There's been a few yes but they're imo a bit... I dunno. Seems a bit pointless and tbh odd. On this thread there's been a few posters jump in and tell everyone what they must do, age that if they don't do it then .

Why on earth would anyone bother posting to do that? As if we're not grown ups with brains. Annoying but also amusing tbh.

Sorry went on tangent.

Can you say what analogy is? It's unusual, v interested!

twinklystar23 · 17/12/2021 06:48

Am so pro voting, my g.grandmother was a suffragette as well! I am so politically homeless, time to make our concerns heard as we are 51% of the electorate.

On a lighter note, reading these reminds me of a quote on the film bad education

"The mums put down their giant glasses of prosecco, got off mumsnet and picked up their pitchforks!"

Time to make our voices heard? With two years to organise and put the pressure on....

Fifteentoes · 17/12/2021 08:48

Why are women who are interested in women's/ girls rights, their situations all over the world.

ALWAYS been told to prioritise something else?

Does this happen to other rights groups?

For me personally, it would in this case, yes. I support struggles against racism, homophobia etc, but I don't think any of them are more important than climate change, simply because it's not going to do any of those groups any good to achieve equality in a world of unlivable climate catastrophe.

Fifteentoes · 17/12/2021 08:58

And you could easily turn that argument on its head: Why is it that young people, when they make the really quite modest demand of expecting to have a habitable planet to grow old on, just as every previous generation has assumed, are told that there's always some other problem to be addressed first?

NonnyMouse1337 · 17/12/2021 09:04

@Fifteentoes

Because short-term and more immediate concerns and worries are always going to top people's lists. Uncertainty and instability of the job market, rising costs of living, lack of affordable housing - these are some of the things that impact people on a daily basis. A lot of people are not going to give a flying fuck about some future doomsday when there are more pressing issues like what are they going to do if the landlord hikes up the rent again. Armageddon style scenarios might get some folks fired up, but for many others it feels depressing, hopeless and too big of a problem to contemplate. It's human nature.
Fifteentoes · 17/12/2021 09:25

Lib Dems take North Shropshire from Tories with 34% swing.

Clearly not many mumsnetters in North Shropshire. Smile

catzwhiskas · 17/12/2021 09:26

Interesting result in Shropshire today. Do we know if the new woman LD MP is fighting for women, or accepting the nonsense put about by the party?

prudencepuffin · 17/12/2021 09:29

As a political activist for god knows how many years, I am not used to sitting on the fence! But nonnymouse and "fifteen toes*, I think you both have a point. True that huge numbers of people are more worried about whether they will keep their job or even if they can keep putting food on the table. But also true that the planet is fucked unless immediate action is taken (and yes, I know all countries need to sign up to this). Its what keeps me awake at night and what makes it bloody difficult to vote, given that I`m furious about womens rights being threatened as well. Thousands of us must feel like this and its not a good place.
