Penn’s Lia Thomas breaks 200/500 Free records in meet with Princeton, Cornell

USA women’s freestyle swimming records were broken this weekend!!!

To all those who keep using the ‘scale’ argument to justify inclusion of males in female sport, tell us again how it takes more than one male competing in female sport to significantly and negatively impact that sport?

I am very happy to hear your well thought out and evidenced reasoning.

Penn’s Lia Thomas blasted the number one 200 free time and the second-fastest 500 free time in the nation on Saturday, breaking Penn program records in both events. She swept the 100-200-500 free individual events and contributed to the first-place 400 free relay in a tri-meet against Princeton and Cornell in her home pool.

Sounds wonderful until you realise that for their first three years competing in the competition, they competed as a male.

Coach Linda Blade’s tweet says :

Well of course women’s records are being smashed!

Lia competed as male for first three years in #NCAA.

This is not right!

We need to return to #SexBasedSports!

#SexNotGender to preserve fairness for female athletes.

Interesting. One of the US swimmers has spoken out publicly

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10676873/Kentucky-swimmer-tied-Lia-Thomas-NCAA-champs-slams-officials.html

Though from a non Ivy University so presumably with fewer fears of losing scholarships and damaging future career prospects.

A tie, so Lia was presented with the trophy but hers was sent in the post. If TWAW why do men seem to treat trans women as if they were special.

Liveliferun · 05/04/2022 08:09

Now that is a brave and stunning woman, well done to her for speaking out. Training every day for four years only to be overshadowed by a male swimmer, this is clearly wrong and I don’t know how anyone can defend males in women’s sport.

Great message - 'not a dude'

Thanks needmore.

I am very glad to hear that woman’s story. And really, how brave.

I have noticed since this just how very few posters try the ‘the young are so much more inclusive’ on us.

Because, guess what, they are not when it comes down to realising the impacts.

Fabulous!

FatFucker · 07/04/2022 22:57

Brilliant!!!

BettyFilous · 08/04/2022 20:03

Lia has reached TikTok. My 14 year mentioned watching a video about the recent race over dinner, saying it was unfair.

Helleofabore · 09/04/2022 00:32

And I just had dinner where our host was telling us all about emily Bridges.

This really had reached the mainstream.

Great video! I love how he adds his own “IT’S MA’AM!” moment. “GET OVER IT!”

Whatiswrongwithmyknee · 11/04/2022 12:54

She didn't as it's a female record and she's not a female. Unless her time compares well to a man, no record has been broken.

UPenn doesn’t appear to offer sports scholarships.

Riley Gaines has already secured some scholarships for going on to dental school after graduation - loss of scholarships is definitely something she has considered when speaking out.

[quote Sasketchewoo]So apparently if men and women were allowed to compete together, we would end up repeatedly beating them and make them feel bad. There is no reason at all to imagine women would repeatedly come last in most sports. Nope. None. Sports were only ever segregated because we beat men so often in so many things.

Hmm

Is she really a doctor? Doesn't come across qs very bright

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 11/04/2022 17:24

She/her PhD is in injury prevention in sport (it won awards) but given that she/her focus is now on 1) understanding the influence of gendered environments on sports injury, and 2) conceptualising gender inclusive sport, I don’t think she/her is going to be impartial on this.

Sure there are sports where sex has little or no impact (equestrianism, shooting) or where women can outperform men (ultra endurance events) but to try and argue otherwise for sports like cycling, rugby, athletics, football, swimming etc is bonkers.

And as for trying to use the women’s football analogy - doh! We know that women’s football was banned because it took the spotlight off the men’s game, but the whole point of the single sex sport argument is that the women weren’t playing against the men.

I am just topping this thread up with this news: Australian swimmer Emma McKeon has said she does not support males in the female sports category.

awesome stuff!!

There is something about Thomas that makes me swear they will go full Jenner and more.

Soak up the attention, make it all about them and then when other trans women start to leave them in the dust flip to a sudden 'conversion' and a life trying to get on Fox news to argue women's sports should be respected by everyone else.

Opportunist through and through.

Good for her. Ridiculous that it's a brave thing to say.

Crackersnack · 21/04/2022 00:40

Well done Emma! I imagine the lefty msm in Aus might be a bit baffled now about how to report it as Aussies love her. The media has been having a field day slamming Katherine Deves and her terfy views because they can easily get away with it (because politician-bashing, especially of the misogynistic variety, is practically an Aussie sport in itself) but now that a genuinely loved and respected sportswoman has said something the public might be interested in listening to the issues. Thank you, Emma.

Crackersnack · 21/04/2022 03:11

And now Emily Seebohm!

Thanks and kudos to both Emma and Emily - it is such a brave thing to get out there first to speak about it, but I honestly think sport and fairness is where Australia will start to get it.

9now.nine.com.au/today/transgender-athletes-emily-seebohm-says-sport-should-be-inclusive-but-fair/22f13b41-2fce-402e-b513-aafd000afa96

Helleofabore · 21/04/2022 07:06

I am so pleased that Emily has said this too. Go Emma and Emily. So brave! I hope more swimmers around the world will follow suit.

And then more women from other sports.

But I think the world is getting the idea now.

While Katherine Deves has taken so much abuse, even protests down at Manly, she has sprung this right open. I hope the journos, who have been so ridiculous in denying the science and piling on will now take a closer look. (Probably not though sadly).

That Olympics clip proves the point.

I'd like to see Lia Thomas swim against Adam Peaty.
