Hellebore interesting that you note this. I was talking to friend / colleague, someone I respect for her feminism and intelligence, on the TWAW issue and DV refuges. Her position was that we needed to assume ‘good faith’.

When I mentioned examples that called for caution, she said something about one high profile media story distorting the wider picture. My response was well how many incidents would be enough? Isn’t just one case enough to call for some caution on dismantling single sex spaces? But it seems the answer to that must be ‘no’.

This wasn’t an extreme trans activist. This was an intelligent and lovely person coming from a position of good faith and sisterhood. Morever, my sense was also that her mind was set on this issue and that nothing said would change it. The whole Terf accusation has stuck enough to the point that even just questioning what’s happening renders the questioner as the bigot and therefore anything being said by them to be dismissed.

Because surely that would apply to men too?

The biggest majority of men are not going to assault you but its because of the smaller minority that we have single sex spaces.

I don't think that's necessary. Is the victim of a woman who exposes her penis to them any more or less startled or upset than if a man exposed his penis to them? Is a woman who is raped by a woman with a penis less of a victim - or a different kind of victim - than a woman raped by a man?

I think the #notourcrimes hashtag is utter nonsense. What does it actually mean? Women trying to distance themselves from other women who happen to use their penises to commit crimes, because they themselves don't commit them? Well a high proportion of men have never raped anyone either so #notourcrimes applies to most men too.

Assuming you’re actually serious….is there not a point in transactivism- say for example the point where you find yourself empathising with and excusing flashers and sex offenders - where you stop and think “hmm, this does seem like there might be a tiny issue here”?

A penis is a male sexual organ. If a person has a penis, they are male. A male person is not a woman. A male person who exposes their male penis in public is very, very definitely not a woman by any sane person’s understanding of those words.

DrBlackbird, does she say the same about child safeguarding? Most people accept we all have to be vetted — the opposite of assuming good faith — because a few will be dangerous to children. What about scam emails? Or cold callers trying to get her bank details? Where does her absolute trust end?

Well sophocles I wonder if Harriet might answer whether they also are of the opinion that it is right and just that a victim should refer to their male rapist, who the court has decreed should be referred to as a woman, as a woman.

Does Harriet feel very comfortable that women and children who are victims of rape have to refer to their violators as a ‘woman’ and have absolutely no right to frame their violation in truth and fact. But to perpetuate a lie, to have to lie to the world about what happened to them because that male has identified as a woman?

Are they even allowed to identify their attacker as male?

I suspect that harriet’s post is coming from a superficial level of analysis.

But obviously this person would rather be in a female jail. I think a female jail would be much more validating for the mental health of this masturbator (were there some inappropriate touching of underaged girls as well?). This woman would obviously like to be close to women.

A male jail would not have any women to..bond with… And male prisoners might behave like meanies if this woman starts to whip out her penis and masturbate towards them.

Spent at least three years in prison, a serial, violent offender.

The legal name change came after the prison sentences. In my view name changes should be made far more difficult and convicted offenders should have to apply to the court for permission to do so.

And no journalists should be forced to use language in accordance with a criminal's beliefs. Although I do wonder if that journalist didn't just think oh I have to call that pervert a woman? Fine. Let's see how you like that headline.

I've been talking about this in the context of 'deadnaming' for a while now @CharlieParley. It's just a way to scrub the past and can have devastating consequences for safeguarding/employment/safety - you name it.

Also my DM died recently and I had to list all her marriages and married names for the death cert, as a legal requirement. They are all listed on the death cert too. Even in death, women are adjuncts of men. Wonder what would have happened if I'd tweeted about the registrar deadnaming her...
