Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Anti trans for asking not to conflate sex with gender?

On a menopause event at work and in the comments section they are being asked to use inclusive language such as 'people who menstrate'. These are being challenged and those who challenged are being called terf and accusssd of making others feel unsafe.

The people doing the presentation therefore have taken the stance anyone can go through the menopause.

I'd love to feedback that they should not conflate sex and gender. Surely if we just talk in term of sex and a biological function it can't be challenged? It takes the discussion away from a condition impacting females.

That is factually true.
I think it sensible to ask them to be clear about their language.
It's great that some feel able to challenge.

OatALot · 25/11/2021 12:24

It was all done annonomoulsy.

Coyoacan · 25/11/2021 12:25

Sorry, no suggestions, but I'm just gobsmacked that they want to talk about menopause without reference to biology.

Helleofabore · 25/11/2021 12:26

Sorry? Who is accusing others of being a terf? A professional consultant? Colleagues?

Kotatsu · 25/11/2021 12:29

Has someone missed the point that the menopause is about turning a 'person who menstruates' into a 'person who doesn't menstruate'?

How are they going to talk about menopausal women, and those who have gone through menopause? 'people who once menstruated, but don't expect to be doing it again?'

OatALot · 25/11/2021 12:29

Colleagues in the annonomous comments section of Teams when someone challenged the 'people who menstrate' comment. We were also referred to as CIS in the comments.

OP posts:
ScreamingBeans · 25/11/2021 12:43

Write right back, that you are being made to feel unsafe by the erasure of the word woman from a conversation about biological female physical processes. You are also being made to feel unsafe by being misrepresented as Cis when you don't believe in genderism and you are being made to feel unsafe by the implication that your legally allowed views are not allowed to be aired in this environment.

Fuck them. It's time to start using their own shitty unsafe language against them. Fight safety with safety!

ScrollingLeaves · 25/11/2021 12:49

They should be using the correct language related to the biological state of being a woman which is a protected characteristic.

OatALot · 25/11/2021 12:53

It's the civil service. Tbh I have no idea whether I'd get into trouble.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 25/11/2021 12:56

Sorry OP that’s really rubbish! If it’s anonymous why would you be in trouble?

OatALot · 25/11/2021 12:58

Well it's finished and I want to feedback. I think I want to complain about the use of terf. Someone also suggested we use hormone deficient syndrome or something along those lines.

It’s dehumanizing language. Why the refusal to use the word for adult human females?

Are people aware of the strategy often used in warfare and in conquering a population that one strategy is psychological warfare?

Banning the language of the population is often used. Banning certain words etc.

It breaks down the unity of the population and it promotes fear in that population out of being harmed for breaking the rules.

I’m not saying that this is a strategy being used, but you can see after effects from populations that had their language outlawed.

Quote The Equality Act in your response, they can't rewrite the law.

Sex is a named protected characteristic. Its an offense to create a hostile environment for others based on their protected characteristic; so the people challenging others for standing up for their sex based rights should have their comments removed at the very least.

Victimisation

Harassment

The Civil Service has a legal duty to act on your complaint.
''The Equality Act 2010 requires public authorities to:
• Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct prohibited by the Act.
• Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
• Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.''

The NHS inclusive language document makes it clear they use biological sex when it’s issues about biological sex (which obviously menopause is) and use ‘trans friendly terms’ only when talking to an exclusively trans audience.

Unless this is only for a trans audience I’d say it ignores this.

Sex is also a protected characteristic. They can’t exclude women to prioritise another protected characteristic.

It also makes it much more confusing for anyone who has a language barrier. Which will likely also include people who come under the PC of disability or race/ethnicity etc often.

They could use women and other people who menstruate if they want to be inclusive. At a push.

timeisnotaline · 25/11/2021 13:11

Bloody hell. As someone else points out the whole function of menopause is shutting down the female body’s ability to conceive, one effect being turning people who menstruate into people who no longer menstruate, so having the discussion constructed around people who menstruated is singularly inappropriate.

RedCarpetRebellion · 25/11/2021 13:13

Forstarter high court judgement means believing in sex is a protected characteristic.

Would they be ok with a slur about any other pc? Course not. This should be no different. I’d copy in the above judgement (or article about it).

Theflamingnerd · 25/11/2021 13:16

Above everything else you need to point out that people who menstruate is not factually accurate when discussing the menopause. I presume the course covers pre and post menopausal changes, so therefore referring to people who menstruate would not be very inclusive of anyone who has gone through the menopause already. You'd be excluding the very people the course is discussing, as they no longer menstruate.

Female is the factually accurate and inclusive term as this covers everyone who could go through the menopause, regardless of how they identify.

BettyfromBristol · 25/11/2021 13:17

When did being offended become feeling unsafe? Too many people lack resilience nowadays, it's so depressing.

MilitantFawcett · 25/11/2021 13:18

I’m CS too OP so interested in how this goes for you. I’ve used the sex as protected characteristics to challenge successfully in the past and yy to saying that cis and Terf are unacceptable to you and you find their use offensive. In fact I’d say that continued use of them in the comments could be construed as bullying.

Theflamingnerd · 25/11/2021 13:22

I'd also be inclined to raise a concern that these individuals deliberately targeted the event with the sole intention of derailing a conversation about issues that affect women in the work place. These individuals have therefore created a hostile environment based purely on sex, which is a protected characteristic. They have prevented a protected group from discussing issues that affect them, through slurs and harassment based on the protected characteristic.

If anyone has any claim on feeling unsafe in this scenarios it's women.

What's wrong with "woman"?

Hormone deficient syndrome ??? FFS this gets more like a spoof comedy show every day. So what about pre pubertal girls ? Are they also “hormone deficient syndrome” sufferers ? Please challenge this OP. Then send the details to a journalist.
