Oh yeah, Sam Smith reached where they are by talent alone, and clearly isn't from a background of wealth and privilege...

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1134509/City-banker-sacked-spending-company-time-sons-pop-dream.html
Brought up as a privileged son of a millionaire 😱. Yes, Sam is most certainly pulling up the drawbridge. Sam cannot possible know what it is like in the real world.

It is disgusting that Sam has so much clout. And big ticket female singers see no issue.

Terfydactyl · 24/11/2021 06:33

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

I hope the audience do a Jarvis Cocker and moon the sanctimonious organisers of the Brits en masse at the live show.

Or a shedload of MNers get tickets and then, when Sam Smith inevitably appears on stage, wave placards and sing a beautifully-harmonious, top-volume, 20-minute extended version of the chorus of 'I Won't Back Down' - you know, the Tom Petty classic that Sam 'paid unwitting tribute to' and ended up having to pay TP a load of the royalties from 'Stay With Me' for!

I am so there for this. Would be wonderful.
OverByYer · 24/11/2021 07:06

I couldn’t name a single Sam Smith song, has Sam actually won any prizes?

madisonbridges · 24/11/2021 07:14

Didn't he win something for his Bond song? Sorry, I don't know the film or the song.

LizzieSiddal · 24/11/2021 07:31

The Brits doesn’t get half as much publicity as they used to. This announcement ensures all eyes will be on it for the foreseeable.
However as a PP said, they will be tying themselves in knots in order not to look “unfair”, so we’ll have a year where a male wins and the next a female will win.

Newnameneededxx · 24/11/2021 08:39

@LemonSwan

Theres no such thing anyway the male/female brain theory was debunked over a decade ago

YY obviously. The key word here is SS thinks he doesn't have a female or a male brain - because I am pretty sure as an out and proud gay man he certainly knows what a male body is.

So what else can he possibly be basing his non binary status on? Just having a wee touch of lady feelings from time to time. Not all the time, just sometimes when he's not having strong man feelings that day.

You know like when you have to rush to the salon for a recolour, but have to switch quickly to man mode in order to do a swift parallel park before quickly returning to lady mode to make the final decision on highlight colour. Its very stressful and I do sympathise.

Exactly….

All this male/female feeling crap is all based completely on outdated stereotypes.

Or is it just me?

fournonblondes · 24/11/2021 09:01

I keep thinking that we are going right back to the past. Sad times!

He has a Bond song?

Damn that’s Bond trading down massively. Chris Cornell to Sam Smith…….

LemonSwan · 24/11/2021 12:46

All this male/female feeling crap is all based completely on outdated stereotypes.

Well I have to assume that it is, because how could a man possibly know how a woman thinks or feels. They cant so it has to be based on an assumption - which are the basis of stereotypes.

And whats interesting writing this is I also have no bloody idea whats going on in SSs head, so I am making assumptions and thus stereotyping theyz.

Why cant we all just be ourselves. Why the need for all this labelling and grouping; yet simultaneously not allowing women to label as a group.

Going through this sounds like a bad thought experiment which leaked from a philosophy class somewhere.

SunflowersInTheShade · 24/11/2021 12:57

So, if I get this right... they had to include Sam Smith in a category and to accommodate him/her/they they've dropped the female category altogether?

So to accommodate one person with a male body aka man they push all the women under the bus? Progressive... right... yeah

Terfydactyl · 24/11/2021 13:52

@madisonbridges

They, not he.

And this very common misgendering someone is apparently literal violence or something.
I'm only pointing it out because even when you have the time to type it and think about it and change it before you post, we still get it wrong.

Someone who has already won it, don't forget.

@FusionChefGeoff

I hate this too and the implications for female artists - but genuine question, is there a way that women can be a 'forced focus' without discriminating against anyone who doesn't ID as male or female??

I know that this move negatively impacts a much bigger number of artists (women) than it helps (NBs / trans) but equally, I'm not 100%
comfortable with the alternative of just accepting that some artists would be automatically excluded as they wouldn't fit the 'male' or 'female' award.

I'm genuinely looking for an alternative approach.

They would fit the male of female award though, because their sex is either male or female. Non-binary is about gender, gender is a social construct ie made up by people to pigeon hole people into certain stereotypes. So non binary people are basically people who don't want to be pigeon holed into gender stereo types - but who does??? Which means everyone's gender is non- binary. So instead of getting rid of male and female why don't we just get rid of gender stereotypes and non binary people (everyone) will be able to just be whatever sex they are rather than having to worry about being pigoenholed by stereotypes.
MrsTerryPratchett · 24/11/2021 15:20

I genuinely feel like I can sing. I belt one out in the car. The reality is that I can't. I am tome deaf. Why can't I have a Brit? For my genuinely held beliefs.

A good, fictional example is Elle in ‘Legally Blonde”. Apparently utterly feminine, delicate, blond, and pink-wearing but with twice the tenacity, intellect and legal knowledge of her former, would-be - lawyer, male fiance.

Yes that’s what I think which is why I can’t get my head round it!

Can’t they stick to biological sex for awards and let anyone be any gender they choose? Why would this not suit them?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 24/11/2021 21:25

The reality is that I can't. I am tome deaf.

That doesn't matter - you should qualify for the Booker prize too.... as long as you believe you can Grin

RedCarpetRebellion · 24/11/2021 21:37

I shall identify as a noble prize winner.

I don’t care which one. I just want to be able to say my pronouns are superior/godlike/betterthanyou.

I also identify as NME’s god like genius. Every year.

Get on with the worship please.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 24/11/2021 21:38

That sounds such common sense, it's so difficult to understand why so many people struggle with it.

You are an individual person in your own right - certain basic things are baked in and unchangeable, such as your sex, race and age; but almost everything else can be designed around your own feelings, desires, preferences and ambitions - sexuality/gender identity and relationships, any religious beliefs, fashion sense, musical preferences, career - loads and loads of things.

BUT these things are of no interest to the authorities - they're largely up to you. They want to record your name, sex and date of birth - and they need an up-to-date address to contact you when necessary - but otherwise, it's up to you who you want to be. The state won't pigeonhole your life in so many ways, so why ever would you choose to do it to yourself?

I can't spell tone. But I believe I can so yes, Booker Prize. Actually screw that. Nobel Prize for literature!

Well, the Brits have clearly been remiss in their system for some years, because Sam Smith should have won the award for the worst ever Bond song. Never mind, maybe now he can win the award for being the most pretentious navel gazer. He certainly belongs in a category of his own, so come on Brits, sort this out!

I'm shocked and saddened that you have been overlooked in this way @MrsTerryPratchett - surely this warrants a petition to get your special status recognised and rewarded? Never forget that you are truly SPECIAL, and we are all here for you.
MrGHardy · 25/11/2021 08:27

So you halve the number of winners.

And we all know who will lose out more. Just look at Hollywood and despite years of virtue signalling, etc. the number of black winners across the board is still low. Not to mention female directors.
