Brits get rid of separate male & female awards

From next year it will be an award for best artist.

Be interesting to see how the winners go…..

I have emailed them from the address on their website informing them that sex is a protected characteristic under the law, sex discrimination is illegal. gender identity is not part of uk law except for those with a GRC whom are afforded the rights (some not all) to be treated as the opposite sex.

so they are discriminating against men and women with this new no sex categories and also discriminating against real transsexuals with a GRC whom wished to be referred to as the opposite sex so much they went thru 2 years or more of living as the opposite sex, maybe getting surgery and applying for a GRC.

so basically the Brits are discriminating against everyone mentioned in the Equality Act 2010 to pander to Stonewall? and Gender Identity/Self ID which is not a characteristic in law.

do please email them yourselves too the more voices the better.

The first few years will be fine as they will be very careful to be sure they aren't criticised. Then it will slowly become all men (unless Adele releases an album every year).

IANAL but unfortunately I suspect that as the Brit Awards are not an organisation delivering public services, the EA2010 won’t apply here. They’ll be free to set whatever criteria for award categories they wish.

I havent looked at the stats so no idea if thats true - but if it is surely we have just halved the opportunities for recognition for everyone, all for the sake of Sam Smith wanting to decide his brain is neither male or female.

I am not being funny when I say that I am sure plenty of the female artists who dont think they have a female brain.

The reasons female awards and awards like the MOBOs were created was otherwise awards are dominated by white men. I feel this is a step backwards but happy to be proved wrong - if awards are given to the best person regardless there shouldn’t be any issue…

I hope the audience do a Jarvis Cocker and moon the sanctimonious organisers of the Brits en masse at the live show. They are taking recognition and sales away from women- as if Covid hasn’t punished the live music industry enough.

Theres no such thing anyway the male/female brain theory was debunked over a decade ago both by MRI scans and other medical testing and psychological studies into how adults respond to babies based on what sex they think the baby is (very telling, gender is a social construct) and studies of other cultures that are outside of western influence. for example the idea that men are more methodical is social conditioning, studies of indigenous tribes in south America and Africa setting them tasks showed no difference between the sexes proving that prowess in particular brain functions is trained, learned like anything else. male and female brains are identical at birth except in size with male brains tending to be 11% larger, the brain is a muscle exercise in areas increases their efficiency and in some parts their physical size.

The only problem is who decides who the best person is? (Probably a panel of white men).

It's been suggested before, for things like sports, refuges, prisons etc, where resources really are limited to two distinct categories, and obviously females need their own category for safety, fairness and dignity etc.

Keep women/female category.

Make the men's category more inclusive for non binary, gender non conforming, genderqueer folk. Educate men better to be more accepting and inclusive.

People like Sam Smith who don't identify as men but still need a category without destroying the women's category would fit neatly into the men's plus.

So we ditch the idea of women's and men's, we move to women's and men's plus. Or Menz+.

I think this would be good.

Lol! Yes his logic was so back to front. We need to scrap the sex categories do that when males dominate we can realise their is a problem in the industry and we can work to rectify that, Mariella missed a trick by not saying “ perhaps by having a separate female category?” Honestly it was such nonsense. And the implicit implication is that the female category is “lesser” and that females really secretly want to compete with the males. Ie. The male category is the better one to win

Just catching up; behind the scenes they'll have to decide a turn taking secret two categories thing going on.

They'll tie themselves in knots and people with real talent will loose out.

I expect the changes to these particular categories will be uncontroversial and will result in a fairly even split. That's because there are a lot of big name female artists who hold their own at the top of the music industry; I'm sure Adele is very likely to win next year. (Boy, Sam Smith will be miffed when he realises that this just means fewer chances for Samself to win and he should have kept his mouth shut and stayed in the male category ).

I think the trouble is really in the other less prestigious categories, where we know women don't get the same representation.

I'm worried this change will actually make it look as if there are no problems with female representation in the music industry.

YY obviously. The key word here is SS thinks he doesn't have a female or a male brain - because I am pretty sure as an out and proud gay man he certainly knows what a male body is.

So what else can he possibly be basing his non binary status on? Just having a wee touch of lady feelings from time to time. Not all the time, just sometimes when he's not having strong man feelings that day.

You know like when you have to rush to the salon for a recolour, but have to switch quickly to man mode in order to do a swift parallel park before quickly returning to lady mode to make the final decision on highlight colour. Its very stressful and I do sympathise.

Or a shedload of MNers get tickets and then, when Sam Smith inevitably appears on stage, wave placards and sing a beautifully-harmonious, top-volume, 20-minute extended version of the chorus of 'I Won't Back Down' - you know, the Tom Petty classic that Sam 'paid unwitting tribute to' and ended up having to pay TP a load of the royalties from 'Stay With Me' for!

Hopefully it'll make the whole ceremony much shorter and decent programmes will be resumed quicker.
