True. But they could also have refused to comment. They could even have said something pro-trans without putting the knife into JKR. They chose to denounce her.
Yes, I agree. I think they could have normalised disagreeing with someone (if they do) respectfully and could also make it clear she's not done the thing she's accused of.
The quote that keeps on coming to my mind from Harry Potter when I think of this stuff is:
" 'If I thought it could help you,' Dumbledore said gently, 'by putting you into an enchanted sleep, and allowing you to post-pone the moment when you have to think about what has happened tonight, I would do it. But I know better. Numbing the pain for a while will make it worse when you finally feel it.' "
It kept coming to mind whilst I was listening to Helen Joyce and Kathleen Stock's audio books. It kept striking me that it isn't kind to pretend that people can change sex, at some point they will have to deal with the reality of their sex and it will be all the harder because people have tried to protect them from it.
Particularly for kids who are socially transitioned young.
