Assuming this is a way for predominantly children to circumvent parents and get their hands on a binder.

I have always found Lush staff quite immature and ridiculously chirpy. Also very persistent and evangelical.

NecessaryScene · 09/11/2021 09:44

Just as a reference point, what's the current rules/practice on things like piercings or tattoos for children without parents' presence/knowledge?

ArabellaScott · 09/11/2021 09:52

@KittenKong

Are these things given out on the NHS
Good question. I can't see any mention of them being given out on the NHS.

www.england.nhs.uk/publication/service-specification-gender-identity-services-for-adults-non-surgical-interventions/

ArabellaScott · 09/11/2021 09:53

No mention of binders here: www.nhs.uk/conditions/gender-dysphoria/treatment/

ArabellaScott · 09/11/2021 09:54

And no mention of binders here: gids.nhs.uk/puberty-and-physical-intervention

ArabellaScott · 09/11/2021 09:59

Hm. Given that so many young people may be looking into the use of binders, it would be good to see the NHS' stance on the use of binders. I could only find reference to post surgical use after mastectomies, etc.

No results for 'binder' on a search of this site, either.

Are binders very niche?

Floisme · 09/11/2021 10:20

What the effing, fucking, fucketing fuck?

Pardon my tone.

EishetChayil · 09/11/2021 10:22

There are some nasty little oiks on that Instagram comments section. One prince among men just threatened to doxx me to my employer. I'm self-employed mate, but nice try! Gobshite.

KittenKong · 09/11/2021 10:26

I wonder if his employer (haha, mum) would be impressed.

foxgoosefinch · 09/11/2021 10:28

I can't see the instagram comments any more -- did they delete them?

Itsanewdah · 09/11/2021 10:33

Amazing! as somebody who wears binders, I love this idea.
People who want to bind will find a way. A good quality binder (gc2b are really good ones) is the safest way to do it (tape etc are really only for advanced users, not for beginners).

Queenoftheashes · 09/11/2021 10:33

Well hopefully this is going to bring yet another controversial issue inside this issue into the light

OvaHere · 09/11/2021 10:34

This is a shocking thing for a company to involve themselves in. They've completely lost sight of all appropriateness where children are concerned.

It goes to show just how disregarded basic safeguarding has become that they are so confident to do this publicly without any consideration of consequences.

It's promoting self harm to impressionable young girls. Would they hand out laxatives to children with eating disorders who wanted to be thinner and didn't want their parents to know? Of course they wouldn't so why do this?

Queenoftheashes · 09/11/2021 10:35

@Itsanewdah I’m sure they will but normalising it isn’t great. It would be better for you to accept your normal human body in the long run but perhaps you aren’t getting the right support from people around you. That doesn’t mean this practise should be encouraged generally.
I have done it by the way. Didn’t work - tits too big. Was a completely unrealistic aspiration and no benefit to me of entertaining it.

Queenoftheashes · 09/11/2021 10:36

Practice not practise sorry

foxgoosefinch · 09/11/2021 10:36

How old are you, @Itsanewdah? And when do you think girls are the appropriate age to wear binders? Should 12, 13, 14 year olds be able to?

Plenty of small, local makers of the exact same products available on etsy. You can even support black-owned businesses :)

Ironically, Lush is also being boycotted by TRAs for other marketing decisions they've made (giving stuff to police).

KittenKong · 09/11/2021 10:39

Lush is being boycotted for a range of reasons. So don’t try to make it all ‘oooh the nasty dinosaur women’

littlbrowndog · 09/11/2021 10:40

Why do you bind your breasts is it to stop men looking at them ?

In some cultures girls get their breasts ironed in the hope that the girls will not get sexually abused or raped

Is it the same for binding your breasts ?

foxgoosefinch · 09/11/2021 10:43

I don't think that's the attraction @MondayYogurt. The idea is that girls are able to obtain the product from Lush without their parents knowing. They setup is not for adults who want to order from "ethical" Hmm producers and have it delivered to their own houses.

The setup is to allow young girls without much money to obtain it without having a credit card, ordering it themselves or having it delivered to their home. They scan a QR code in store which presumably takes the £7 from their phone account or uses Paypal.

That's why posters are outraged. The faux delight from "nb" posters is obscuring the fact that it's a service designed for children to obtain binders in secret, not adult women to buy products for themselves.

MoonlightApple · 09/11/2021 10:59

It’s like if they started offering dieting pills if you donated to a pro-ana group!

KittenKong · 09/11/2021 11:02

Or clean blades for self harm - didn’t some medical facilities offer sterile blades and dressings?

justaftb · 09/11/2021 11:03

What the....???????

Dinosaurhearmeroar · 09/11/2021 11:04

Emailing the pr. any points you would like me to include besides the obvious physical damage and misogynistic messaging?

foxgoosefinch · 09/11/2021 11:07

Indeed, the "people who want to bind will find a way so let's give them slightly safer binders argument is not very different from "drug users will always use so let's provide them clean needles", really, isn't it?

And there might be a place for that argument in an adult service, but it's absolutely clear in law that organisations are not to provide such services to children.
