BBC spokesperson said: “The article looks at a complex subject from different perspectives and acknowledges it is difficult to assess the extent of the issue.

“It includes testimony from a range of different sources and provides appropriate context. It went through our rigorous editorial processes.

“It is important that journalism looks at issues - even where there are strongly held positions. The BBC is here to ensure debate and to make sure a wide a range of voices are heard.”

@Blibbyblobby

It does seem odd that LGBTQIA+ activists champion people’s right to enjoy any consensual kink or fetish without shame, but somehow don’t extend that to respecting sex-based attraction. Clearly some people’s right to be accepted as who they say they are matters more than others.
I’m not sure about that.

Some kinks aren’t acknowledged.

Have emailed saying thanks and how much I appreciate them

@merrymouse but @blibbyblobby point really highlights that SW avoid supporting the groups that the organisation was founded upon. The right for same-sex attraction to be equal to opposite sex attraction.

How is it fair that I can request men only on dating sites, but lesbians cannot select women only?

nettie434 · 31/10/2021 01:38

@Dougalskeeper

I'm yet to be convinced the BBC have changed their spots, but it's a good start
The current Director General - Tim Davie - has been really explicit about the BBC's need to be impartial. He is right of course. I think there have been improvements over the past year. This was his first big speech as Director General last September:

www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/speeches/2020/tim-davie-intro-speech

MamsellMarie · 31/10/2021 05:53

Parts of Tim Davie's speech
'We debate the latest political shenanigans, internal dramas and the latest press flare-up as though these things represent what matters. This is dangerous. It means that we can take our eyes off the key issue of how much value we are delivering to each member of the public, and the UK as a whole'
..... ie they are not following Twitter etc

'Our ambition is to create an organisation which reflects more accurately the society we serve. That’s 50% women and 50% men, at least 20% Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic, and at least 12% Disabled. A modern 50/20/12 organisation. Alongside this, we will deliver plans to build our socioeconomic diversity, as well as ensuring we are truly inclusive for all LGBTQ+ employees.'

Hooray - no one 'minority' trumps all others.

That is a good piece

And if we are to dismiss reports on minority experiences because they don’t include robust data on prevalence - well, we can forget about any reporting on the trans community for a start.

No one in back lash actually engaged in the question.

And on Kelley

That is an astonishing position for anyone of a conventionally liberal persuasion to take, let alone for the head of an organisation founded to advance the rights of gay and lesbian people. It implies that females who are only attracted to people with female bodies can and in fact should, in effect, choose to be attracted to male bodies.

That contradicts a proposition that advocates of gay rights have struggled, over decades, to gain widespread acceptance for in liberal societies: that sexual preference is not a choice, but an innate and unavoidable predisposition.

IrisAtwood · 31/10/2021 07:23

I thanked the BBC for their response in the hope that this will encourage them to continue to investigate and report on the way that women are being treated by some trans activists and trans people.

Enough4me · 31/10/2021 14:12

It would be great if the BBC or journalists used the MN threads on this subject to highlight the support for honest journalism.

Sadly if we got down the route of full self-identification, then we can achieve the 50/20/12 position by having all positions filled by able white males.

”One BBC source saidthe broadcaster has received 4,819 complaints about the article but a further 5,520 people wrote in to note their approval of the piece.”

What's particularly amusing in that article is that the batshit open letter isn't mentioned at all.

It's good to know the BBC staff include people who seek the truth
"...the BBC’s own staff, who are often deeply split on the issue of trans rights".

Those staff benefit from the proof that there were more positive responses to argue for continued truthful reporting WineGlitterball

OJ is not a coherent man.

BloodinGutters · 02/11/2021 17:38

LOJ must be into some heavy self medicating to cope with the cognitive dissonance if he forgets his own work!

Datun · 02/11/2021 17:47

What on earth is he talking about?

A group of people being pressurised into sex by other people, is newsworthy.

Whether they're trans, gay, or straight. Is he trying to make out that it's only because these people are trans? Despite writing a story about people who aren't trans, doing exactly the same thing?

The problem is, if you object to lesbians, for instance, talking about being coerced into heterosexual sex, then you are going to have to come up with some sort of reason why you object. Whilst still attempting to remain on the right side of history.

Which is why it's incoherent rubbish.

Datun · 02/11/2021 17:51

One of the interesting things about that BBC article is that it keeps begging the question now. Should lesbians include males in their dating pool if they say they are not males? It's another kryptonite question.

Finally, the general public is seeing where this has led.

And yet again, I thank God for Maya Forstater opening the floodgates.
