I find reading DM articles online very difficult to read, they’re so full of pop ups, ads and links to totally unrelated content (and why is it always Peter bloody Andre!!).
I cannot see from the article their actual source on where this has come from? If says “The change was revealed in an official response to feminist campaigners calling for an overhaul of the rules.” does anyone know what that is actually referring to?
Its very poorly written, not least because I can’t see any evidence that Patel has said the apparent quote in the headline, but also seeming to say that the figure of 436 individuals recorded as women prosecuted for rape between 2012-2018 (not convicted or in prison, btw - prosecuted. There is a ~5% conviction rate for rape, IIRC) was calculated by Prof Sullivan - actually she simply highlighted the governments own statistics on this, I believe when submitting evidence to the Scottish Parliament recently. Thread discussing that here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4360759-More-than-one-woman-a-week-prosecuted-for-rape
I do think the Tories are purposefully getting ahead on these issues now, in a calculated fashion. Whereas Labour and other parties who self-identify as “progressive” only comment either in Stonewall pre-approved slogans, or react when really given no other option to by Andrew Marr etc (and then tend to make a tit of themselves showing up their poor understanding of what the issues actually are), the Tories are carefully putting out very uncontraversial things like “keep up the hard work LGBA” from Johnson and now “police should record offenders by their actual sex not self-ID gender” from Patel - anyone who would find these statements problematic would never vote Tory anyway, so they really don’t have to worry about anyone who would find these moves offensive. But this is how the Tories hold the middle ground, the centrist swing voters, this is how Labour lose the next election and the Tories stay in power. Which is overall still bad for women. Although at least maybe crime stats may be vaguely accurate when it comes to offenders’ sex.
