I don't think this is terribly complicated. It's the same reason no one else has.
How many women who post here regularly were at first very sympathetic to trans rights, who thought maybe there was something to the medical element, who trusted organisations like SW, and especially medical professionals, to say what was right and true?
Lots did. And ministers and civil servants are the same. This capture has been done very cleverly with people approached individually who were thought to be sympathetic. Mention of questionable things was kept under wraps. Lots of people didn't connect dots until bad things started to happen and those that did were branded as bigots and aggressively silenced.
It still seems to be the university educated urban progressives who are very captured on this, and that was clever, because in a lot of ways they set the social agenda.
