Netflix Employee Walkout - Transactivism in Microcosm

This is funny and sinister in equal measure.

Netflix employees in California staged a walkout in the wake of the recent Dave Chappelle special. A man was counter-protesting with a 'We Love Dave' sign. A transactivist physically accosts the man, rips up his sign and leaves him holding just the stick it was attached to. The transactivist then shouts, 'He's got a weapon!' giving the crowd the excuse they have been waiting for to jostle a peaceful protester backwards and shout abuse at him. One transactivist then drowns him out by rattling some jingles an inch from his face, while another (who would be great casting for a Netflix remake of The Crucible) repeatedly screams in his face, 'Repent, motherfucker!'

Like the Wi-Spa video, this is kind of perfect. It shows transactivists physically attacking someone, falsely claiming that person is the threat, and then using that to legitimise their own aggression. It all feels so familiar.

I don't know anything about the guy counter-protesting. He could be someone with whom I would agree with nothing except this. But he is absolutely right here and he deals with the situation so well. He makes them all look insane.

Possibly because it's not a grassroots civil rights movement.

ScreamingMeMeSawUs · 22/10/2021 10:26

And they don't have a sense of humour.

nauticant · 22/10/2021 10:29

That's an often unregarded part of their Achilles' Heel.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 22/10/2021 10:41

Agree, nauticant.

Meanwhile, the people standing up for women's rights are hilarious. Genuinely funny.

I wonder why the trans lot are not?

nauticant · 22/10/2021 10:48

It's also apparent from the Amnesty International fiasco that companies and organisations letting their name be associated with trans activists carries a real risk of reputational harm.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 22/10/2021 12:51

Aside from the woman who seemingly asked Tambourine Trans Allay Trooper to stop there was a distinct lack of self awareness of how badly the whole encounter would be perceived

Yeah i saw that…plus it was right ‘next’ to her ear

RepentMotherfucker · 22/10/2021 16:11

I am surprised that RepentMotherfucker hasn't been identified alongside blue t-shirt guys 1 and 2. Not wanting that person identified or anything but it's just surprising given their...contribution.

AlfonsoTheDinosaur · 22/10/2021 16:13

Tambourine Person hasn't exactly come forward to take responsibility, either.

Montage of racist tweets made by trans activist speaker at demo overlaid on his speech at demo. Warning very offensive racist language used.

Helleofabore · 24/10/2021 10:45

That is horrible to watch 334bu. Really horrible.

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 24/10/2021 10:47

jeez louise

Ashlee Marie Preston has some truly revolting views

do you really want to ally yourself with someone like that etc. and so on

334bu · 24/10/2021 10:49

Talk about feet of clay. Angry

IvyTwines2 · 24/10/2021 10:59

And it looks like Preston's views were well known after they came out during Preston's involvement with a Democrat campaign a couple of years ago, but Preston was nevertheless lauded as the leader and face of this Netflix protest group.

334bu · 24/10/2021 13:38

Yes Ashlee was part of the Elizabeth Warren campaign to become the Democratic Candidate for President and these tweets caused a lot of problem for the campaign. I believe Ashlee may have " resigned" from the campaign . However, this background of racist tweets should have been well known to the Netflix employees.

Wow, very violent too.

People like that are horrible in any workplace or organization they weasel their way into. They find every bit of leverage they can to make it impossible to reprimand or fire them, once people start to notice what's going on.

One of the interesting elements of some of the gender ideology stuff, and allied movements, is it seems like it stops people who are doing things like hiring from listening to their gut when they meet people like this. Because some of them, at least to me, are completely obvious right from the start. But people squash down the warning bells because they are supposedly marginalized.

Agreed, it's like because they are part of the 'right group' their actual behaviour doesn't matter, or is excused. It's like the sacred caste that I first read about on here - when you have people in this group, they are protected from the usual scrutiny, and get away with things that others wouldn't.

Blibbyblobby · 25/10/2021 12:47

It is I think more insidious than that. The dominant gender narrative, the one that gets pushed through groups like Stonewall and the training providers / "experts" that follow them, is that any misgivings are proof of unconscious bias. Hence "educate yourself!" "Do better!".

The underlying message is "On this topic you cannot trust your own judgement. The only way to be fair is to outsource any assessment and decision making to us either directly or by applying the rules we give you." Which is why we see such regulatory capture. Intelligent people believe on this one topic they literally cannot trust themselves.

And this is uncomfortable for me because I do believe in unconscious bias in the context of race, sex, age, class, disability, sexuality, religion and yes, gender nonconformity. I do think there is a place for experts and people with lived experience to come into organisations to help them.

What has gone wrong with gender-first advocacy in particular is they are given space and access that other groups are not, so they are able to speak against the interests of other protected groups without challenge, and have taken advantage of that to define even the act of challenge or attempting to find a compromise between conflicting interests as itself an act of bigotry.

Posted on an update thread but also thought worth posting here.

DC has videoed his response to the backlash against The Closer.

It's worth a watch.

Spoiler: he's not backing down.

His starter for 10:

"You said you wanted a safe working environment at Netflix...well it seems like I'm the only one that can't go to the office anymore".

Goes on...

"To the transgender community, I am more than willing to give you an audience, but you will not summon me, I am not bending to anybody's demands".

Hope that gives a flavour of what to expect.

BreadInCaptivity · 26/10/2021 00:39

Another sound bite:

"You cannot have this conversation and exclude my voice from it".

Yes, I think this is absolutely true.

I suspect that it could theoretically have the same problem with other identity politics types of advocacy, where some nefarious individuals might try to use special status to act out, except that any yahoo can claim a queer identity.

But people do start to distrust their gut feelings about certain social behaviours, which actually are usually in many respects well founded instincts. Yes, it's good to query why someone creeps you out. Maybe they are awkward for perfectly innocent reasons, maybe it is your own bias. But it also might be that the person is a creep.

I'm not convinced that unconscious bias training is useful at all, TBH. There's no evidence it really improves people's attitudes in a meaningful way.

Well done Dave
