Netflix Employee Walkout - Transactivism in Microcosm

This is funny and sinister in equal measure.

Netflix employees in California staged a walkout in the wake of the recent Dave Chappelle special. A man was counter-protesting with a 'We Love Dave' sign. A transactivist physically accosts the man, rips up his sign and leaves him holding just the stick it was attached to. The transactivist then shouts, 'He's got a weapon!' giving the crowd the excuse they have been waiting for to jostle a peaceful protester backwards and shout abuse at him. One transactivist then drowns him out by rattling some jingles an inch from his face, while another (who would be great casting for a Netflix remake of The Crucible) repeatedly screams in his face, 'Repent, motherfucker!'

Like the Wi-Spa video, this is kind of perfect. It shows transactivists physically attacking someone, falsely claiming that person is the threat, and then using that to legitimise their own aggression. It all feels so familiar.

I don't know anything about the guy counter-protesting. He could be someone with whom I would agree with nothing except this. But he is absolutely right here and he deals with the situation so well. He makes them all look insane.

@littlbrowndog

Here’s the tambourine in the repent motherfuckers
DARVO again. The guy with the placard was laughing. I didn’t see any profanity from him in the clip.

The “peaceful” protesters were the ones using profanity.

Helleofabore · 21/10/2021 09:52

So, we also have activists who scream directly in women’s faces, activists letting of smoke devices in Grenfell, activists hitting windows in a basement venue to drown out voices, and activists who hold up sexually threatening signs out and drown out women naming victims of male voilence….

Piapiano · 21/10/2021 09:53

@Mycatismadeofstringcheese

I keep giggling at the repent mf’s person’s squeaky “excuse me , excuse me” as the get to the front of the crowd.

Anyway shouldn’t it be “repent birthing-person fucker”

Haha yes, can't believe the TRA used the non-inclusive word "motherfucker". What about the fatherfuckers and the non-binaryfuckers? Why will nobody think of the fatherfuckers?!

I watched this last night and it gave me such a good chuckle before going to bed. I keep forwarding things like that to my DH who is starting to understand why I go on about gender stuff all the time. It's hard to believe until you see it for yourself.

PronounssheRa · 21/10/2021 09:53

Smashing the placard to yelling “he’s got a weapon” was a perfect example of DARVO in action.

In the USA this kind of shit can get people shot, it was a fucking shameful thing to do.

ArabellaScott · 21/10/2021 09:55

@Clymene

That woman with the tambourine screeching 'Repent, motherfucker' is the best thing.

This is like a Chris Morris sketch

I had thought repentmofo was part of the schtick. But presumably not. Amazing.
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/10/2021 09:57

Why will nobody think of the fatherfuckers?! Grin

CruellaDeVilla · 21/10/2021 09:57

Pmsl at “what about the non binary-fuckers”

I ❤️ Dave Chapelle

Yes, you're absolutely right. I hadn't thought of that. That bloke was really brave

I counted 13 “repent motherfucker!” 🤣🤣🤣. The crescendo too, “repent motherfucker” 9 to 10 escalates and 10 is definitely in capitals: “REPENT MOTHERFUCKKKERRRR!” before she seemed to tire a bit for the last three, bless her.

Dont forget activists who beat up 60 year old women. Gotta be inclusive dontchano!
EsmaCannonball · 21/10/2021 10:08

'He's got a weapon!' is my favourite bit, but also the scariest bit. They cannot deal with a peaceful and reasonable counter-protest so they have to attack the guy and then tell a bare-faced Trumpian in-front-of-cameras lie about him being a violent threat.

I, too, noticed the lack of actual diversity in the employees. (I guess if we could see inside their identities it would be the most marginalised gathering ever.) I was thinking about how this whole thing would play out on the BBC but then I realised that the BBC's take on diversity and inclusion makes it unlikely that the most successful black comedian on the planet would ever get an airing on one of their channels. Never mind, we're still treated to Frankie Boyle or all those people who are related to other famous people.

YY. You can see they were very well practiced in all the tactics they deployed. Professional disrupters. If he had touched the person putting them self between him and the crowd even accidentally there would have been similar, and he may well have been put in danger.
Woeismethischristmas · 21/10/2021 10:12

It is hilarious and awful at the same time. Jokes are funny. The guy is a comedian and his own podcast and hopefully should do quite well out of this. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if he got a comedy thing on Netflix? Not sure I could of been so jolly in the face of someone screaming repent motherfucker at me.

The double standards. After the 3 ring circus of the Central Park Karen.

"It's OK when we do it, against avatars of people we don't like" should be the motto of these deranged zealots. Admittedly it is not very snappy though

"We are here today not because we don't know how to take a joke. We're here because we're concerned that the jokes are taking lives," said rally organiser Ashlee Marie Preston. That's quite the claim.

Jonathan van Ness from Queer Eye and Jameela Jamil made a video thanking people for taking part, apparently.

ArtemesiaK · 21/10/2021 10:19

Thanks for sharing that, OP! It's given me a good laugh! I think the actual protesters were far outnumbered by the people who were just there to film events unfolding. This is such an own goal for the TWAs, it makes them look so ridiculous and the footage will be everywhere..... :)

But yes it's religious fervour and zealotry in a new guise.
