Netflix Employee Walkout - Transactivism in Microcosm

This is funny and sinister in equal measure.

Netflix employees in California staged a walkout in the wake of the recent Dave Chappelle special. A man was counter-protesting with a 'We Love Dave' sign. A transactivist physically accosts the man, rips up his sign and leaves him holding just the stick it was attached to. The transactivist then shouts, 'He's got a weapon!' giving the crowd the excuse they have been waiting for to jostle a peaceful protester backwards and shout abuse at him. One transactivist then drowns him out by rattling some jingles an inch from his face, while another (who would be great casting for a Netflix remake of The Crucible) repeatedly screams in his face, 'Repent, motherfucker!'

Like the Wi-Spa video, this is kind of perfect. It shows transactivists physically attacking someone, falsely claiming that person is the threat, and then using that to legitimise their own aggression. It all feels so familiar.

I don't know anything about the guy counter-protesting. He could be someone with whom I would agree with nothing except this. But he is absolutely right here and he deals with the situation so well. He makes them all look insane.

I watched the entirety of Chappelle's show last night on Netflix as a result of all of this. I wouldn't normally have ever watched it otherwise. The first 5-10 minutes, I nearly turned it off. The joke about child molestation was awful. But it did get better and I was "team Chappelle" by the end. I hope both he and Netflix get a lot of extra publicity and viewers because of this. Maybe people just watching to to see what the fuss is about will have their eyes opened and this will all backfire on the TRAs.

The whole thing goes together. Part of the point is that there are absurdities even in fairly horrible or bad parts of human life, and that it's healthy to be able to see and laugh at them.

He makes a v good point about shouting 'he's got a weapon!' in the US though. So different to the UK where cops and security guards can't shoot you.

By the 13th of October 10 million people had watched Chappelle's The Closer. I guess with all the fuss even more will have watched it. That's a lot of people who will think about "team TERF".

To my shame I’d never even heard of Dave but after the press the show got I watched it, I’m now a big fan and I’ll watch anything else he puts out.

Self-righteousness is a powerful drug. I wouldn't be surprised if the nutcase is actually anti-trans and thinks messing about with 'God's wonderful creation' of the human body is beyond the pale, but got caught up in the heat of the moment, mistook Vito for a (pro) transactivist and decided her particular brand of uber-sweary-Billy-Graham-esque-fire-and-brimstone preaching was the order of the day.

I agree, too, that it's fucking hilarious and frightening in equal measure. The sheer zealotry of some of those people is off the scale.

I'm always really glad when someone's brave enough to stick themselves amongst it, as Vito did right there. All the rope needed for the nuttiest factions of trans rights activism to hang themselves as publicly as can be is a gift to all moderate, un-ideological or easily-fooled people currently sitting on the fence and wondering how 'harmful' it really would be to just let the demands of trans ideologists roam free and unchecked.

I do hope we get something good at the LGB Alliance. It would be such a shame to go to have gone to all that trouble to arrange a venue and not get any decent performances.

They'll struggle to get a formation dance team going as the numbers of protesters were, shall we say, rather sparse.

Galloping witch shouter edges it for me, it's the look and reaction on the face of the woman he is shouting at, the Policeman smirking and adjusting his mask to cover said smirk and the face of galloping witch shouter during the reverse gallop that seals it for me.

I just watched the video and was laughing so much that my DH asked me what I was laughing at. I tried explaining it to him and then laughed so much again that I cried. I can't remember when I last did that, so thank you, Man With Stick.
