This is funny and sinister in equal measure.

Netflix employees in California staged a walkout in the wake of the recent Dave Chappelle special. A man was counter-protesting with a 'We Love Dave' sign. A transactivist physically accosts the man, rips up his sign and leaves him holding just the stick it was attached to. The transactivist then shouts, 'He's got a weapon!' giving the crowd the excuse they have been waiting for to jostle a peaceful protester backwards and shout abuse at him. One transactivist then drowns him out by rattling some jingles an inch from his face, while another (who would be great casting for a Netflix remake of The Crucible) repeatedly screams in his face, 'Repent, motherfucker!'

Like the Wi-Spa video, this is kind of perfect. It shows transactivists physically attacking someone, falsely claiming that person is the threat, and then using that to legitimise their own aggression. It all feels so familiar.

I don't know anything about the guy counter-protesting. He could be someone with whom I would agree with nothing except this. But he is absolutely right here and he deals with the situation so well. He makes them all look insane.

The video is available to download from drive.google.com/file/d/1AaOHBpExuqy-SHq-qIBial6z9hSXdjML in case you want to save your own copy of the tambourine screeching wench for prosperity. I know I did. It's a classic.

44 trans people were killed last year in America which is a tragedy, any death is

With a population in the US of 330 million, and 0.5% of the population being trans, that would make the homicide rate of trans people in the US in 2020 to be 2.7 homicides per 100,000 trans people.

For the population in general in the US in 2020 the homicide rate was 7.8 per 100,000.

This pattern of a relatively low risk for trans people is always found in the countries of the developed world.

BreadInCaptivity · 22/10/2021 00:46

Well it's really the clip that has everything you need to know about TRA tactics isn't it ?

1. Gaslighting - "he's got a weapon" having been the person to turn a placard into a stick by destroying it.

2. Provocation/disrespect for physical boundaries/self created attempts to claim victimhood - let me push right into your space in the very hope you push me back and I can claim you hurt me.

3. No debate/soundbite slurs - Tambourine person "RECANT MOTHERFUCKER" ad nauseam whilst deliberately trying to drown out any response.

Aside from the woman who seemingly asked Tambourine Trans Allay Trooper to stop there was a distinct lack of self awareness of how badly the whole encounter would be perceived.

They seem so engulfed by a sense of righteousness that reason had departed.

At one point I thought there was a very real danger that the situation could have escalate dramatically - with potentially awful consequences.

What's depressing is that aside from SM I've seen very little in mainstream press about this.

Reports about the walkout, yes - but about this encounter, no.

So sunlight between the clouds....

Igneococcus · 22/10/2021 06:46

Gerard Baker has a column about it in the Times today which I don't have time to read now, but here it is for anybody else who'd like to read it. The comments will be full of people accusing GB to be a Trumpian though and miss the issue on hand:

TheWeeDonkey · 22/10/2021 06:55

Well that was both scary and hilarious in equal measure. Repent Motherfucker is the icing on the cake I think, but the hes got a weapon guy is dangerous.
I don't think I'd get away with a repent motherfucker tshirt but I quite fancy an I like jokes t-shirt

Another thing for "transactivism in microcosm".

As with Wi Spa, the media lie:

This has got legs. There are copies of the video everywhere, memes are being passed around and large YouTubers are making videos about it. Another own goal for TRAs. I'm glad it ended this way and not violently.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/10/2021 07:22

Nonny that's brilliant Grin

Vanishun · 22/10/2021 07:28

Have you seen the list of Netflix employee demands? Towards the end of this... endless funding, trans writers, and ability to censor anything they want Confused

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10117571/Dave-Chappelle-says-hes-open-talking-anti-transgender-comments-Netflix-employees.html

And apparently the head of Netflix has apologised!

NecessaryScene · 22/10/2021 07:31

And apparently the head of Netflix has apologised!

That will definitely appease them.

Everyone, use this strategy. Wink

NecessaryScene · 22/10/2021 07:32

Actually, no. This makes more sense.

Ricky just posted that meme at random I'm sure

Vanishun · 22/10/2021 07:57

Didn't Ricky say something then sort of back off a while ago to help save his Netflix show ratings?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/10/2021 08:02

there was a distinct lack of self awareness of how badly the whole encounter would be perceived

It's been realised now thought. Pretty sure the video has been removed because it makes TRAs look very very bad. (Copyright claims are one of the easiest and quickest ways to get media taken down).

Grumpyosaurus · 22/10/2021 08:42

Can Vito sue Variety for libel? There's enough evidence.

I'm so pissed off by the level of outright lying, casual errors and slanted writing not just in the news, but wider than that. If you undermine public debate by lying, you undermine democracy.

Scoutingformygirls · 22/10/2021 08:54

What did "long blonde hair person" manage to say in one or 2 words that made "repent person" stop so abruptly? V effective!

Vanishun · 22/10/2021 09:01

Just watching that longer YouTube clip. From his own commentary: "this is becoming like a cult ... what religion is this, that I have to repent for my views?!"

BraveBananaBadge · 22/10/2021 09:06

That Mail story is full of weird details.

The organiser trying to make Chappelle look like the bad guy for not show up to talk in the middle of a protest - why would anyone walk into that? Hardly a 'safe space'.

The writer-director of Transparent laying down the law when I'm sure that show was roundly criticised for having Jeffrey Tambour play a trans woman - it's TV, money talks, always.

Rose McGowan telling them where to go - interesting, she has history with TRAs.

Unless it's moved on, I thought the Netflix exec apologised only for perceived corporate insensitivity and not for the special (and it wasn't enough). Did I read something to say Netflix actually supported the staff's right to walk out or am I making that up?

NecessaryScene · 22/10/2021 09:33

Oh man, this just gets better and better. I just saw some tweets by Coleman Hughes, saying he didn't actually think this was Chappelle's best work ("aside from a handful of hilarious moments, preachy and boring": twitter.com/coldxman/status/1451344960662482954 ).

Okay, but is Coleman making the mistake of only considering the stuff happening on stage?

Chappelle has gifted us "Repent Motherfucker!", tambourine exorcisms, "[snap] He's got a weapon!" and stuff like this tweet.

"I know those aren't your real pronouns". GrinGrinGrin

Dave is a comedian capable of performing magic when he's not even present.

If you watch Vito's video, at one point when he being pushed backwards by Grey and White Jumper, she tries to trip him.

NecessaryScene · 22/10/2021 09:41

If I understand this exchange correctly, Vito is officially enby on his driving license, so this is blatant hate-misgendering by the LA Times.

He should get them to post a correction and beclown themselves further.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 22/10/2021 09:44

So, let me get this right. Vito suggested they/them, and could have one of the new driving licences that allows you to record yourself as being non-binary. But the reporter refused to accept it.

Ahem, Amnesty would like a word. And here is a t-shirt for Vito to wear to their next speaking engagement.

Regarding the reporter: the two words that come to mind are "hoist" and "petard".

nauticant · 22/10/2021 10:09

Maybe it's a Friday feeling but I'm getting more optimistic that more are people taking the piss out of the gender identity ideology.

I realise that the script according to Mahatma Gandhi is supposed ot be:

First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.

but I don't this applies to trans activism.
