Why doesn't Bridget Christie get it?

Guardian interview today:

www.theguardian.com/stage/2021/oct/20/bridget-christie-flashers-penis-horrible-menopause-comedy-female-anger-comedian

She talks about how awful it was to be flashed. She talks about the experience of menopause. And then she gets onto Ricky Gervais:

'Gervais, meanwhile, receives her ire for his efforts to be an “edgy” comedian, and his use of transphobic tropes (“I’ve always identified as a chimp,” he says in Humanity). “It’s the same joke over and over again,” she says. “Or some joke about toilets. Just let people go to the fucking toilet.”'

Why doesn't she understand it's not just about the "fucking toilet"? That it's also about the fucking changing rooms, the fucking prisons, the fucking sports, the fucking rape crisis centres?

If she can understand that women have a distinctive physiology that makes their experience different from men, why does she think it's possible for men to "identify" as women?

Has she missed the torrent of sexual abuse and death threats aimed at women who dissent from this ideology?

Because she nicked all of her award-winning "A Bic for Her" show material from B3ta and she's not actually that bright?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/10/2021 17:15

Cognitive dissonance. She's terrified of having the wrong opinions, that's why they're always so angry and dismissive of any concerns.

Saucery · 20/10/2021 17:17

When you’re clinging on to a living you can’t afford to step out of line. No one will be able to cancel Ricky Gervais. She, on the other hand, is dangerously close to the abyss of nonentity.

Vargas · 20/10/2021 17:18

I know, such a disappointment.

I find her so funny, but like Joe Lycett (and many others) she seems to just assume that GC people hate trans people. So boring. How many times do we have to say we don't hate trans people, we hate predatory men who use trans rights to self-id in order to hurt or diminish women and girls. In toilets and everywhere bloody else. FFS

Gncq · 20/10/2021 17:21

I'd put self preservation before actually believing what she is saying in this case.

Vargas · 20/10/2021 17:24
But 'it never happens' Hmm
nauticant · 20/10/2021 17:25

Come on, everyone takes their sword to the toilet:

I think she worked for the Daily Mail for nearly a decade, so it’s not like she’s spent her life in a middle-class Guardian bubble like so many but yet doesn’t get it at all. Comedy does seem to be very woke now. Apart from the ones earning megabucks.

LK1972 · 20/10/2021 17:27

Sorry, that was in context of 'just let the people go the fucking toilet' quote, which has been done over a million times, I know. It's just we get the 'it never happens' events with depressing regularity now, and anyone still pushing that line is willfully closing their eyes to the facts.

Listen to the episode of the museum of curiosity on BBC iplayer where jk Rowling was the guest.

Bridget Christie was the season's Co presenter and she opened with a dig at jkr, asking her about 'being kind' and in such a sneering tone - jkr of course was very gracious and classy in her reply....

It put me off BC, and I had really enjoyed her feminist series on radio 4. I really really struggle with all of these female comics who call themselves feminists, even talking about feminism and some of the negative experiences they have had in their industry, but who then refuse to see THE BIGGEST THREAT TO OUR SAFETY THIS GENERATION..... Bridget, all the guilty feminists, Sarah pascoe, josie long, Katherine Ryan....

..... and yet, they all hardly without thinking will have GC rhetoric in their material and I grit my teeth and cringe and think shit. They just don't do the reading....

ArtemesiaK · 20/10/2021 18:45

Isn't she Stuart Lee's missus? I quite liked him, I suppose I have to stop now......

DismantledKing · 20/10/2021 18:47

She’s probably terrified of being cancelled. Her husband is ten times the comedian she is.

IDanielRadcliffe · 20/10/2021 18:49

Her husband hates Gervais too and doesn’t get it either I don’t think.

Agreed. Especially whispery Josie.

It's just liberal feminism. Feminism-lite. Feminism as a 'can't we all be equal' without any reading or thought or analysis as to how and why women are oppressed on a global scale.

Stewart Lee definitely doesn't get it either, and has done a lot of cheap jokes about Mumsnet in his more recent live shows.

The pair of them just can't see it. I do think a lot of comedians, even the ones that claim to be alt, have a desperate need to be liked and to fit in and this is all part of it.

Clymene · 20/10/2021 19:02

They're all bloody cowards

TeamRex · 20/10/2021 19:19

It's so strange how the liberal feminists don't get it. They talk about growing up as a girl, becoming a young woman, the harassment, the huge affect on your life of becoming a mother, yet simultaneously say TWAW or talk about "female identifying" people.

It's definitely cognitive dissonance because men who transition will not have had those experiences. It's not hate to know what a woman is.

They'll come round eventually.

Yes, I've seen him perform a few times and it's so disappointing to see him take the lazy route. He always seems a bit more intelligent than the average comedian, so you'd think he might have applied his brain to the issue.

I suppose one of the things I find endlessly fascinating (and endlessly disappointing) in this whole ghastly business is who gets it and who doesn't. You wouldn't necessarily expect Ricky Gervais to get it - though perhaps because part of his schtick is not caring what people think then maybe has nothing to lose by getting it. Whereas Lee and Christie have a lot to lose.

I think a lot of comedians think they are somehow better and wiser than the rest of the population and it’s their responsibility to educate us in some way.

Boood · 20/10/2021 20:21

Stewart Lee is the archetypal leftie mansplainer, I’d have been astonished if he had turned out to be GC. And I’m not surprised he hates Gervais either, they’re polar opposites.

She's certainly not funny.

That's correct. Even when she was famous she wasn't famous. Her husband isn't funny either.
