Harrop MPTS Hearing

I thought this may be of interest:

www.mpts-uk.org/hearings-and-decisions/medical-practitioners-tribunals/dr-adrian-harrop-nov-21

The tribunal will inquire into the allegation that from 10 May 2018 to 23 November 2019, Dr Harrop inappropriately used his Twitter account to post tweets that were offensive and/or insulting and/or inappropriate in nature and some of which were intended to intimidate.

I have to say that if there is a silver lining to all of this mess, it's that the protection SM corporates have given to TRA's (in contrast to the blocking of GC women) has come to bite back.

The confidence they have displayed in posting increasingly misogynistic content, supported by their echo chambers and desire for more followers had created an orgy of evidence that has repercussions in real life.

It's what I've always valued about MN.

Every post has equal weight.

You can't "sort" by most liked/viewed/follower's.

Some people think it's outdated. In technology terms yes it is.

But in providing a forum where discourse and rational debate is facilitated by that "lack" of technology it's excellent imho.

BoreOfWhabylon · 20/10/2021 00:45

I agree Bread

Here's another interesting thread. I wonder if any of the tweets it contains were drawn to the attention of the GMC. Amongst other things, AH calls a senior obstetrician and academic a transphobe.

Hubris has infected so many of these vile people and now it’s catching up quickly.

Rhannion · 20/10/2021 00:52

Well done Bore and thanks for keeping that information. More and more sunlight

Datun · 20/10/2021 04:59

@FannyCann

Well this is welcome news. I have a horrid "hidden" folder of screenshots in my photo library which I would dearly like to delete but every so often it's useful to refer back to. I am sure there are numerous reported tweets and the dates specified simply give a sample. But for those who aren't familiar I am posting a couple from around the time posters on Mumsnet were alerted to his activities. He cross referenced one poster from their twitter account and their Mumsnet account to threaten them. Tweets relating to that are within the specified time frame.
Bloody hell. I remember that, but it's still shocking.

This is such a good point and one that hadn't occurred to me before. Every cloud has a silver lining. Let's hope that even more chickens start coming home to roost. (Please forgive mixed metaphors.)

@BoreOfWhabylon

Hmm
How responsible of him

nauticant

I really wouldn't like to see any public protest anywhere near the hearing. I don't want anyone to get the impression he's the victim of any kind of campaign. Leave them to get on with it according to their process and without any distractions.

This! Please don’t think about any protests, it will look very bad for us and would be used by his side.

LizzieSiddal · 20/10/2021 10:03

And I fully expect his defence will be along the lines of “driven to drug use due to intimidation by nasty women. I’ve now undergone full treatment and won’t do it again”.

That didn’t work for Jensen and it hopefully won’t work for Harrop.

PronounssheRa · 20/10/2021 10:06

Absolutely, let Harrops tweets do the talking

YetAnotherSpartacus · 20/10/2021 10:07

I reckon the boys' club will say "you've been a very naughty boy now don't (let us catch you)do(ing) it again". Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

I suspect so, however, the sunlight being shone on him and his actions and the fact he is not untouchable as he thought he was will also be a form of punishment for him. I hope the MSM pick it up and report it as that will add to the humiliation for him and he will forever be recognised and associated with his actions whatever the outcome of the Tribunal.
Rhannion · 20/10/2021 10:46

I have a gut feeling that the old boys club won’t work here.

Highly unlikely. Some examples:

Pate (dentist) suspended for 4 months initially, has now been suspended for years due to lack of insight, due to Islamophobic comments on a closed forum. Googling Pate and GDC will find it.

Fisher (mental health nurse) struck off for abusive comments. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-essex-38102949

There's also been a nurse suspended for sectarian comments on FB, but I can't remember the details of the case.

Generally this sort of stuff is taken very seriously because it undermines the trust of patients.

Cwenthryth · 20/10/2021 11:12

It seems like undermining the trust of patients is perhaps the key to assessing the severity of there types of offences? The fact that many many women find Harrop’s actions deeply offensive and would be fearful to need medical treatment from him due to his openly stated prejudice against women who hold certain beliefs, that is the problem for the GMC. Right?

RedDogsBeg · 20/10/2021 11:14

Depends on how steeped in gender ideology the old boy's club are, looking at what is going on in the NHS I'd be surprised if they weren't fully paid up members.
FindTheTruth · 20/10/2021 11:19

is anyone live tweeting?

Or just plain misogyny.

You'd really hope so. It's about how seriously they regard misogyny. You can't rely on it, can you?

Though I also wonder about the couple of times where he's explicitly discussed patients he's treating, like the trans woman he prescribed HRT to. Even though he didn't name the patient, that strikes me as highly unprofessional. Certainly if I were the patient in question I wouldn't be happy about it.

Motorina · 20/10/2021 11:40

Also it won't be 'old boys club'. It'll be a panel of three - a lawyer chairing, a doctor, and a lay person. They are totally independent of the GMC. (And, if my experience of other regulators is anything to go by, take their roles seriously and aren't fools.)

Terfasaurus · 20/10/2021 12:17

This is an interesting take.

twitter.com/setoacnna/status/1450760136272891904?s=21

Apparently the GMC are passing the buck to the tribunal service, instead of acting themselves.

All cases involving misconduct are automatically passed to the tribunal service after review by the GMC. It’s part of the statute. www.gmc-uk.org/concerns/information-for-doctors-under-investigation/our-sanctions/referral-for-a-hearing-at-the-mpts

I believe that if Dr Harrop is unsatisfied with the outcome then he has to appeal to the High Court.

Joss Prior says they know everything that’s going on with Adrian and that GC people are going to be disappointed. It’s all going to be fine…Confused 🍿

Excellent point, that too.

The medical profession as a whole is very misogynistic.

Motorina · 20/10/2021 12:47

@Terfasaurus they've straight out misunderstood the process then. It's being passed to the MPTS because that's the body which deals with concerns about the Fitness to Practice of doctors.
