Harrop MPTS Hearing

The tribunal will inquire into the allegation that from 10 May 2018 to 23 November 2019, Dr Harrop inappropriately used his Twitter account to post tweets that were offensive and/or insulting and/or inappropriate in nature and some of which were intended to intimidate.

The BMA code of conduct is irrelevant to this as it is not a BMA disciplinary panel but the GMC. BMA membership is optional as it is a trade union. Half the UKs GPs aren't BMA members but all have to be registered with the GMC.

There has been a lot in the news and in the public psyche recently about men in positions of power using that power to cause harm, and everyone apparently 'missing' the glaringly obvious signals.

I would hope that in light of that, the GMC would come down hard on any sort of red flag behaviour.

The timing is fascinating. Much of Harrop's unpleasant tweeting took place when having right side of history opinions meant you were untouchable but that time is ending (we hope), and the focus has shifted onto whether someone is causing harm. What this means for Harrop is suddenly at the time his shield has vanished the opponents are wondering whether they need to wield their weapons.

His treatment of several women seems to have been targeted and threatening. I know several people made complaints to the GMC and iirc he was then given a Supervisor. That obviously didn’t work out did it.

I do remember thinking I’d be petrified if I ever went into a medical setting and saw him there.

Don't think I've interacted with him and I don't post controversial stuff on twitter - haven't tweeted much at all for a long while. I have liked a few reasonable and respectful tweets by people who are GC and follow a few GC people - would this account for the blocking?

Oh, it seems he doesn't use the account any more and pretty much everyone is blocked

Yes. There is loads of 'TERF blocker' software out there and stuff which will highlight your twitter name in red if you have liked/followed certain people (eg. Shinigami Eyes). I think a single like of a certain twitter user can get you blocked! 👀

It's why I don't ever like or follow anyone on Twitter or ever post. So that I can read everything!

The ‘online’ refers to where he works. If you look at all the other doctors on the MPTS hearing list it has where they are based in that field

I've complained to the GMC twice so maybe they're listening finally.

Good to know. I'm a medic too. Maybe I'll steer clear of Twitter altogether

If I went into a medical setting & he was there I would leave.

Some long time ago I did this. And then complained mightily.
I was terrified making the complaint but I figured get my side in first.

I hope posie can make it to this, but if anyone could get there could we have a tweet thread or a debrief at the end of each day or is it completely confidential?

And I don't think anyone needs to be worried about being on a Terfblocker list. Just block someone right back if you find they've blocked you.

I really hope Posie can be there and he sees her . The Webberley hearing was being tweeted from a couple of accounts, so I hope somene willmbe tweeting along to this. It's a public hearing, after all.

I wonder if Harrop will learn a valuable lesson from the tribunal. A challenging yet important and unforgettable lesson.

It's not even the GMC anymore. It's the MPTS - they're separate. GMC will present its evidence, his side theirs. MPTS makes the decision.
